This has been discussed in the past, but I think after the YEAR OF THE MAMMOTH it is time to bring it up once more. How big is Hearthstone?
I am a long time card game player, however this is my first year playing Hearthstone. It has started to consume my life and I cant help wondering how big this game is. In terms of a CCG not a video game.
As large as Magic, Yu-gi-oh, Pokemon?
Prize money is increasing for competitive play, does this mean it is bigger now than ever before?
Who keeps these metrics?
And why isnt Hearthstone getting compared to Magic more?
Talking about CCG aspects I think Hearthstone is not as big as Magic, Yu-gi-oh or Pokemon but Hearthstone is such a big game when comes to the most played CCG nowadays. Hearthstone compared to these games is simplest, Blizzard said they didn't want to get Hearthstone too complicated.

The simplicity of Hearthstone is really noticeable when you go and play something else. I tried playing a bit of MTGO last night and every card in the current Standard rotation felt like I was reading a bit of War and Peace...

I tried playing Magic on Steam but is far way harder than Hearthstone >.<

I swear it never used to feel this complicated, I remember playing it as a 14 year old for the first time and having no trouble. Maybe I'm just getting old and a bit senile?

I haven't kept up on Magic much until recently, but my collection DOES include old cards; the card effects can be much more complicated these days, but there were also older rules I've heard about that made more complicated interactions even with the same cards than you get now.
I suspect a big reason it seems more complicated is simply that you're older and more intelligent; I dunno if you know anything about MOBAs, but I played DotA back in the WarCraft 3 days (it was a map/mod) and I found it a very simplistic game, but the layers to which I've come to understand MOBAs in more recent years playing League of Legends and DotA 2 is... far and above more complex. My experience with Magic is similar. xP
Anyway, while Hearthstone is huge I honestly doubt it comes anywhere close to the support Magic has, dunno about Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh since I don't really follow them. MAYBE the active player base is larger for Hearthstone since it's easily accessible and easy to play, but I doubt the general support and market for the game beyond that comes anywhere near Magic's; there a big Magic community and even an entire market for re-selling cards. I also see a LOT more fanart of Magic than I do for Hearthstone (specifically, as opposed to general WarCraft fanart), and there is usually precious little fanart for specific CCG cards. xP
clearly not big enough to afford a semi decent design team. 90% of games are decided by turn 4 and who can empty their entire hand by turn 6
So a not even semi decent design team managed to dominate the CCG gaming scene - no, not dominate it - single handedly actually created such a scene with HS. Because CCGs are only a big thing because Hearthstone actually succeeded in pulling people into genre, that was (and still partly is) super elitist and small compared to 'big' scenes.
Can we just stop with this ridiculously stupid bashing? It's not even a matter of opinion. It's a fact that HS broke records. It's a fact that every single other CCG, be it TOS:L or Gwent only happened because not only Blizzard realized that CCGs have become cash cows. That's hardly luck, isn't it?
Yeah, HS is not perfect. The devs aren't godlike entities who are always right. But this mindless bashing is far away from the truth. Can't we just critically discuss what is really wrong about the game?
Hearthstone is likely the biggest if number of players and amount of time in game are the only factors. As far as competition goes I think it still lags far behind Magic and YuGiOh.

For what it's worth, just because something's successful or even influential does not necessarily mean it's good (though it certainly does imply it). There are popular, well-selling franchises in any medium that are considered badly constructed, as well as poor-selling stuff that are considered well-constructed. APPEAL has more to do with profits than quality. Even in my personal life, one of my favorite anime/manga (Bleach) is one I constantly consider bad, I just find it very appealing irregardless. =P
But it seems like you kind of know that anyway since you talked about discussing what's wrong with it. xP I agree with you about the bashing; so many people bash the game but very few of them really have even a slight clue what its problems even are let alone how to fix them. I think Hearthstone is a very good game, but not a great one, and I think that AsmodeusClips kind of nailed some of the more central underlying issues that hold it back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh7XCtjnnDI

Last year. Hearthstone hit 75 million players, world wide. So it's definitely up there.
Hearthstone earned over twice as much money as any other card game in 2016. It's utterly dominant
Simple is the majority of the world IQ dude. That's why chess is chess and candyland is candyland. Hearthstone is candyland and mtg is chess. You make far more money selling to a larger audience than you do a niche market. Why does it need to be complicated, do you tell people you are a legend hearthstone player to impress them or something? Sorry but being a great candyland player is really a joke,

the game is minion removal minion removal.......some simple math and memory..it's a good puzzle game. The art and voice overs are great. The game is meant as a joke and always will be. The joke is on anyone for thinking its hard.

It's a matter of what you consider 'good', 'big' or 'genious'. Considering profit, playerbase and appeal, nothing can rival Hearthstones numbers (obv.). If you measure the quality of a game by how complex, diverse etc. it is, Hearthstone would definitely be topped by other CCGs and TCGs. IMO 'big' refers to its measurable numbers (and OP even made that clear), so one can hardly argue that MTG is 'bigger' because it is far more complex. If you delve into the development of HS (interviews, making-off-ish videos/works) you would also see how complex the making of HS is.
Take this: most TCGs (be it YGO or MTG) have a lot more card output but most cards are absolute trash tier. HS has horrible cards as well, but they are often not that horrible in comparison to other card games. Blizzard cares more about card balance than most TCGs when making the cards. Tho I would say they too often hesitate (e.g. Fiery War Axe nerf) when they find a problem.
Also consider this: People who play/read/enjoy more complex stuff also regularly enjoy their moral high grounds and put themselves above the 'plebs' who also enjoy simpler stuff. IMO that's just ridiculous. Every piece of art, literature, games have their own appeal. Some people cannot enjoy stuff that is 'popular' and deem people who do narrow-minded. Gnerally considering popular stuff badly constructed is just as narrow-minded.
I also do enjoy more complex media at the same time as simple media. It's just a matter of mood to me.

You mean like played by most people? I think hs is the biggest card game in that sense.

That'll do, Huffer. That'll do.
