I have even been playing Hunter (basically Reynad's OP MS Hunter with a couple of alterations), and I am still struggling to climb the last five ranks. I really want to reach the Legend. Does anyone have any advice, or a new deck I can use to climb the last five ranks.
My win rate getting to rank 5 with the Hunter was around 73, and it is sitting around 68 now. I keep changing decks when I keep running into the mirror, and I always questions into something else. Should I just stick with the deck and grind through the sub-70% win rate to legend?
The level of competition rises significantly when you reach roughly Rank 6. Once you reach that level, I would no longer evaluate my performance based on any previous matches. It's a brand new ballgame, more or less. That doesn't mean you should ditch the deck you had been using successfully. It just means you need to know what your win percentage is against Rank 6 or better competition. If your overall win percentage for the month is skewed by unusually high win rates against Rank 20 - 10 players, then you're not getting an accurate read on your current performance against better players.
If your **current** win percentage is between 50% and 55% then it will be a very long and very slow climb from Rank 5 up to Legend. If you stay consistent and play a ton of matches, you'll eventually get there. But most Legendary players have win rates between 55% and 65% during their climb from Rank 5 to Legend ... and even then it still takes hundreds of matches, typically. Players who brag online about having 70% or 75% win rates in Constructed are mostly full of crap. They're either including a bunch of fluff wins against weak opponents, or they're just flat out embellishing.

Either you're lying about your win rate or you play only 2 games a day. With a 68% winrate you should be legend in less than 80 games.
My win rate with the same deck stays there, but whenever I do tank a few games, I change decks and my win rate with those decks plummets. My win rate since I have been at rank 5 has been just over 50, but it's still at 68 for that deck. Should I just keep grinding that deck, even if it starts losing a bit in the mirror?
Thanks guys. I am going to start a new win rate calculation once I hit 5 from now on. I am going to try to grind this our whenever I can. Thanks for the honest words without being dicks guys.
I've heard this 25-to-5 equals 5-to-legend thesis a lot, bit it wasnt true for me (maybe I was just lucky)
I went pretty fast to rank 4-5 playing shaman (at the start of the season, faced mainly druid and hand/zoo), but then struggeled a lot, bouncing between 7 and 3 when hunters became popular. One day, I learned how to play against hunter and I got from 4 to legend in a crazy 25 - 6 winning spree because I faced almost only hunter which I almost always won.
Maybe I was only lucky, but I think the real challenge was to understand how the meta is in this very moment, since it shifts every 2-3 days. Track your game statistics, if you see, you face a lot of one class (>30% of the games) then modify your deck, so you win vs this deck.
If you win all this 30% and go even in the other 70%, then you have a total 65% win-lose ratio, which will bring you to legend in xxx games (insert math here)
Usually I wouldnt commend on switching decks but I kinda felt lost (playing hunter myself) because there are so many control warriors out there. Every time I managed to get some nice winnings the next few games were lost due to ctrl warris.

What deck were you using to beat hunters? I modified mine more to a face hunter (since that is the Hunter that kept beating me in the mirror) and I still lost to them. Hunter is the only class I am under 50% against. If you could link me to the deck you used, I would really appreciate it. I don't have a problem taking out Warrior or Priest, just hunter lol
I have been floating in the top 100 legend rank all month on EU playing hunter almost exclusively. Firstly, I would never suggest changing decks on the fly during losing streaks between 5-legend as this is basically an emotional reaction to losing. Odds are you are playing your best deck (hunter) and swopping to something you think you should be playing (I do this with priest and drop games), decreasing your effective skill level and hampering your climb. There is still time to make legend, I ran from 5-legend in 120 odd games early August, so it is totally doable.
With respect to warriors: I don't know your specific deck (so I'll make some assumptions here) but mulligan for SH, Houndmaster and Animal companion. Buzzard/unleash is a play with 2 minions on the board as you will rarely see more. You absolutely have to run Leeroy for the extra reach, and try to keep and unleash in hand to add some dmg to the combo (add timber here instead of your miracle play if you have the option). I always sack Loatheb to a Death's Bite with one durability, else it gets sacked on a Highmane which is not ideal, as it needs to absorb opponent removals. Use spells to clear the board before popping down your high value minions (shed a tear and kill command those Belchers). Also, you may want to add a kodo to the deck (Acolyte is main target here over armoursmith) and drop whatever tech cards you run (I run Snapjaw for the mirror, kodo for warrior matchups). Finally look for value in your plays as you will not be drawing a full hand here. Don't feed turn 1/2 armorsmiths with webspinners, rather HP and shoot for Hogger on turn 3 for a clear removal. Try and play your SH around shieldslams, as your main winning condition is outlasting their efficient removals. I also find it worthwhile to huntersmark their Smiths/Acolytes and remove it if I have a good hand with strong curve plays.
I hope this helps and GL on your last minute grind.
Well for experienced player, you need only around 2-3 days to climb from 20 - Legend at season end. However for first timer, it can be excruciatingly long due to Ladder anxiety, tilts, deck switching, misplays at crucial moments and other various reasons. Just keep pushing for it, with a lucky win streak you can get Legend in no time!
Well, it took me an age to get to rank 5, and I'm still there. Been swinging up and down between 8-5. I go on a bit of a losing streak, then streak back up right away, over and over. Got to 4, with 2 stars, but haven't been able to get by 5 since. I'll fill it up, then swing back down. I still have that discipline issue, where I change decks too often.

well, I think this is only semi true.
of couse, if you happened to lose 5 games in a row, and you rage, and play murloc-priest oder pirate-druid instead, because you lost 5 games with your favourite deck anyways, then you are most likely to keep loosing.
On the other hand, if you were playing lets say Handlock. And you see that 30-50% of the last 20 games you were facing hunter, which you have a pretty bad matchup against, then it is fair to consider switching your deck until the hunters are gone again and play sth that does better vs hunters, since I am pretty sure you wont reach legend playing handlock in this particular time/meta. (It was good 2 weeks ago, now its not)
I fully agree with a calculated deck change, note that I am referring to rage swopping decks.
Also, for most players (especially at lower ranks), the lack of diverse deck knowledge is probably more of an impeding factor than playing an unfavorable matchup. It is probably not ideal to play miracle rogue even though it is strong if you don't understand the deck fully, as misplays are much more costly than for instance, zoo. That being said, you will always run into the FOTM deck while laddering until it is countered. Right now, hunter still seems to be the go to deck, with some warrior and priest floating around. Hunter decks are cheap, so those will be more popular than warrior and priest decks. The key is to consistently beat the most prominent ladder deck, and at least try to have a fair matchup against the rest.
If you pick the weakest deck vs. the most popular deck at the moment you're going to have a bad time. Playing the deck and beating the mirror is a surefire way to make the climb though.

Brainstorm, this is the deck list I have been using. I currently don't run any Timber's in my deck. What should I change around to fit it in? I am brand new to card games, as Hearthstone is the first one I have really played, so I am still learning a lot about the mechanics. The biggest problem I believe I have, is either trying to get full value out of cards (even when allowing it to lose value may be the better play) and trying to decide when to trade and when to go for face. I find it difficult to trade my 4/3 Houndmaster, for their 3/1 Scarlet Crusader (just an example). I feel like they are getting better value, so I will go for face and they will trade it with my Houndmaster next turn. Next thing I know, they use an AOE and I am left with an empty board while their SC is still swinging strong,
Thanks again for the help. I know you are experienced and your words (along with everyone else on this thread) will help me get over this hump.
Ah ok. I don't run weapons or traps at all in a warrior/taunt filled meta. The main reason for this line of thinking is the fact that warriors tend to focus on spell removal and get defensive minions up until they can finish you off with big legendary minions later on. As such, you will likely sit with a dead weapon in hand waiting for a proc on a trap (which they can probably delay until it suits them) to get going again. Also, Harrison is very popular atm which may be a problem (some priests and even druids run one ooze) which means you could potentially lose a lot of dmg and have some almost dead cards. Also, the mirror with flare screws you over. And I have to imagine with every deck running belchers you could struggle by running out of dmg.
I understand that this is a different type of deck compared to what I run, but here is some thinking on cards I believe you absolutely have with the current decks floating around:
Stonetusk boar: You have no solid removal in your deck if you do not have board presence without huntersmark unleash/lucky AC boar. This is a huge problem as you want/need to hit face with weapon charges. The prevalence of big taunts are also increasing, and the 1 mana tempo removal is probably gold. Also allows cheap draws with buzzard.
Deadly shot: Very underrated card. Can easily win games due to the 3 mana removal cost. Also, many players prefer playing one big creature against hunter, so you tend to hit your target 90% of the time.
Kodo/Snapjaw (both beasts with Houndmaster): Your deck is very light in 4/5 drops, so with the exception of the perfect curve you may be required to plump down a naked houndmaster on turn 4 for some pressure, something that you want to avoid at all costs. Worst case is a turn 4 HP/creeper drop, and then you are probably playing from behind and need to make value trades from behind to get back into the game, in which case control decks may be at the advantage.
Hyena: Good combo with unleash, also not the worst 2 drop in the world if you have no choice. At the very least this guy tends to eat big removals, leaving your SHs safer.
Dire wolf: This card is a beast with unleash (all hounds 2 dmg with proper placement when trying to clear a board) and brings huge value to your creeper drop once traded. Also helps with the draw due to the 2 mana cost with buzzard.
With reference to AOE clears: These are never a total loss unless you give up board control in the process. You are bursting damage anyway, and if your opponent has to clear the board with spells you get board presence back the following turn, which isn't bad. You only really fall behind if you have no plays the next turn (try not to overcommit), or if they get down big creatures and clear the board, at which time (in the absence of cheap removal) it is time to start going face as you lose the extended value battle.
Some final thoughts on hunter trap decks at the moment: Yes reynad crushed with this deck on stream on his climb to legend, but it was new and players were expecting midrange, enticing misplays all around. Also, flare was not as prominent due to a lack of reynad's deck and sjow's secret mage on ladder. Also, players were not familiar with the deck (I guess everyone from rank 5 up know the traps played now), making it much stronger. It remains very strong against zoo (which sees almost no play at high ranks) and may be ok against priest and miracle (save explosive trap for the critical turn), but I think it could struggle against the popular warrior/healadin/hunter matches. You should tune your deck to beat the most popular decks currently (counter whatever reynad/trump/tides are streaming) to climb.
I will post my deck when I get home if you want to give it a go.
Please do. I changed it to more of a face Hunter, and I climbed to 3 and at 4 stars at four now. I am willing to try anything. I don't run any of the cards yout mentioned. I don't even run buzzard/unleash. The undertaker/leper has been way more effective in the mirror (12-2) and is over .500 against Warrior. Haven't played a single priest with it yet though. Warrior, I am 50/50. Considering I am seeing mostly Hunters and then Warriors, I would rather find something that I can win over 70 against both with, but my amazing percentage in the mirror gives me hope.

It takes 2x as long to get from 5-legend then it does to get from 25-5, it is probably to late to reach legend for you :/ sorry man
Yes, that is how you reach legendary. There is no 70% WR road, but a consistent more won than lost.
Considering that the season ends this week, it could be too late as Flood said or you need to play constantly.
The level of competition rises significantly when you reach roughly Rank 6. Once you reach that level, I would no longer evaluate my performance based on any previous matches.
