This is more of a ponder right now. I have enough gold to outright buy the 50-packs that the pre-order is offering - while I prefer to F2P where possible, I'm not too stingy to buy packs if needed.
So I'm wondering whether that's likely to supplement me with enough to really get going, or to consider the pre-order after all.
Of course, more packs is always better, but there must be a vague cut-off point where the value of what you are getting in terms of your collection drops off (and you start seeiong more dustables than neededs)?
Not a lot. In fact, less than 1000. With exams and stuff I won't get time to play Hearthstone all that much anyway, so it probably doesn't matter. Will do Arena runs when I get back to catch up.
70 rly? sigh and here i am as a f2p player who'll get between 25-30 packs when the un'goro releases. do you think it'll be enough though to make a decent deck?
I´ll have 5k ready when the expansion hits. Together with the free packs and quite some dust I have accumulated, I should be good. I actually do enjoy collecting over the next weeks instead of having just everything in an instant.
I usually stop getting packs when I have all commons and most rares in double copy. Then reset the pity timers for legends and epics and craft what´s missing. Then go on.
f2p and saved about 5k. in MSoG i found that the best strategy for me was to spli it between buying 20-30 packs and playing 20-30 Arena runs. While, on average, you overpay for a pack in Arena, you get some dust you can use for crafting - and to play with some of the new cards you do not still have.

If you're a poor Arena player, that is. As soon as you go above 3 wins you a making 'profit' on your pack, depending how you evaluate it.
(I evaluate: if my rewards that are not 1 pack exceed 50G, and 1 Dust = 1 Gold, I have a 'cheaper' pack than the pack in the store) On average I guess I go 6 wins since standard arena, before it was a bit higher. Still, Arena is my way to go.
OT: I have 3500 gold, 2500 of that gold will be instantly spend on packs. 1000G will remain for infinite Arena's.
The question should be how many packs you need to open?
It depends on how many legendary and epics you are aiming for, from my previous experience if you open around 80 packs, I got 2 Legendary and few epics I needed and gives me enough dust to craft 2 more legendary from disenchanting extra cards and golden cards. Since this expansion have more legendary cards, I would say at least 80 packs + hall of fame dust to get you started.
sorry to destroy your f2p illusions but 50 packs means a shit and is nothing.
you will need at least 120 packs to be good with dust and cards after opening.
The following is the list of all non common metagame must have cards, those that you absolutely had to have to make the meta decks work, at the point when the expansion was released:
Now I ask you, when was the last time that you EVER needed 120 packs and a ton of dust to craft what you need? Ever? There was never such a point in the history of Hearthstone so stop talking nonsense, learn to evaluate cards, learn that you don't need to craft everything that comes out and you'll see that the expansions generally cost barely any dust at all. Those who have all the golden Hall of Fame cards are sitting on 10400 dust. There has never been a time when 10400 dust was not enough. Sorry to shatter your illusions.
And before someone says ''But now there are two class legendary cards!'' please check the list again and see how many legendary cards were a must have, an auto include, when the expansion came out? 8. There were 8 absolute must have legendary cards. Ton of class legendary cards means nothing when despite most of them looking good only 3-4 will ever see ladder play.
If you're a f2p player who is only interested in playing competitively than the best suggestion that I have for you is to learn patience and wait for about two weeks until the earliest draft of the new meta is formed and then, according to that draft, decide what to craft.
It depends. If you are serious player and if you got money. You can easily buy 100-150 packs. Which will give enough cards and dust. But if you are f2p player it depends on your time availability. If you got time you can collect 100+ golds each day. But if you are playing for fun and if you play very little per day; what does it matter how much decks you open? With 3 expansion\adventure each year. Its really difficult to finish collection in hearthstone. So just open as many packs as you can. Crafts cards you need as possible. Make decks that you can. And just enjoy the game.
Sure, if you are happy to play only the best decks (Pirates, Jades), then youre right. But I want to play T2 / T3 decks and cards like the new quests as well

In which case you need to prioritize which decks to you want to play first and craft cards for them. Other decks will soon follow. It is just the matter of patience. You really don't need too much dust to make most of the decks work because despite seeing all these legendary cards only a handful of them are really needed even for T2/T3 decks :)
I've got 6000 gold saved up and 7000+ dust. When Un'Goro goes live I think I might have around 7000 gold and 16000+ dust (from the HoF card).
I'll be buying Un'Goro packs in batches of 10, until I have (nearly) all the commons, then I'll start playing arena. After a week or two of doing that, the meta will be semi-settled, I'll have gathered most of the Un'Goro cards, and will start looking into what missing cards I want to craft depending on the meta. Most likely I'll first be crafting some of the Old Gods/MSOG meta essentials, as I won't be opening those packs anymore and they'll still be in rotation for another year. But I'll see, I might be tempted to craft some of the new Un'Goro legendaries/quests sooner rather than later to not miss out on the fun. Tough choices are going to be made! Luckily I have a lot of dust, allowing me a lot of options. Definitely looking forward to it all :)
I have 4500g and dust for 2 legendaries. As always I will buy packs until I have all commons and the most important rares in duplicate. Then I will wait and check the meta and craft the most important legendaries for a T1 deck.

Well, I need them because I want to try them. Its as simple as that ;)
I dont care if they are good as long as they are fun. I play for Rank 5 every month, after that I dont care about ranks or meta or anything like that.
But as I said, I have gold for 100 packs anyways, havent made up my mind yet if I want to preorder additionally. Very possible that I dont.

50 is a really good to have almost all common and rare.
80 to have all common and rare. Lot of epic and some legendary. That what I reach so I can't tell you for more than 80 ^^
Love the tribes.
25 packs, but I can craft some cards with the refund of Hall Of Fame cards.
On average I guess I go 6 wins since standard arena, before it was a bit higher. Still, Arena is my way to go.

On Release i will have about 150 Packs + i still saved about 12.000 Dust.
Crafted golden Sylvanas and Rag to get 3.200 Dust for free.
I craft 100% of the priest Cards in Gold every Expansion and most of the Important neutral Cards priest use most of the time
I have enough gold to buy 100 packs, I am still considering to preorder another 50. So many legendaries this time...
Dust total: 5200 dust
Dust total: 5400 dust
Dust total: 2400 dust
Dust total: 4600 dust

Should you craft/disenchant (Golden) Sylvanas or Ragnaros?

Last expansion I saved up 10k and with that I was able craft every useful card which I didn't get from packs.
Golden heroes: Warlock, Druid, Mage, Hunter
