HearthPwn Community Choice Awards: Year of the Mammoth Edition
The Year of the Mammoth is wrapping up and soon we’ll be saying goodbye to another round of card sets, as they make their graceful retirement into Wild. But hold on! Before we get to the new year, we thought it would be fun to look back and choose some of the most awesome/badass/annoying/misery-inducing/super-fun things that happened during the Year of the Mammoth.
Here’s the best part: we don’t want to tell you what our favourites were, we want to hear from the most important people…you guys!
We want to know which expansion this year was your favourite, which deck you were most annoyed to play against, which card art was the most baller, and more!
Have strong opinions about which class got the most out of this year? Want everyone to know which Legendary weapon is the best once and for all? Now is your chance!
Follow the link below to cast your vote in our Community Choice Awards. Don't forget to check back soon to see the winners!
Best Expansion: Knights of the Frozen Throne -- Treachery Warlock became my new fun meme deck, and Razakus Priest was as close to what I wanted from Gadgetzan, a viable shadowpriest build.
Missed HOFer: Sylvanas. Always slowed the game down and made you think.
Painful Nerf: Corridor Creeper died, but good riddance. Most needed nerf? Quest Rogue. F--k that deck.
Best Artwork: Gold Avalanche. It looks like a surfing shaman, which should be a thing in a troll expansion.
Worst Deck: Tied -- Quest Rogue, pre-nerf. You either had the tools to delay and win it, or didn't, and if you can make Brian Kibler go into a swearing rage mode, it's a cancer of cancer decks. Personally, I loathe Evolve Shaman that kicked in around Un'Goro, as it killed of my thief priest decks (you can't make their garbage cards work). Later expansions really made this deck more RNG-Jesusy, which made it more frustrating. Fortunately all the AOE and aggro decks caught up to obliterate them, but there's still an occasional one on the ladder.
Best Quest: I'll give priest one the vote. I've tried to make warlock and paladin work to no avail.
Best DK: Bloodreaver Gul'dan brought warlock back, Shadowreaper Anduin is still formidable, but Frost Lich Jaina is going to be the overall winner when the rotation comes around in 2019. The most dramatic and problematic DK to deal with.
Best Legendary Weapon: Kingsbane is legit. Honorable mention: Dragon Soul might be for real in an expansion or two -- for now it works as a side addition to Big Priest.
Class cards: Warlock rebounded from Un'Goro with two solid expansions. Priest in 2nd -- everyone thought Gadgetzan was going to be the brief moment for priests. I wish control paladin decks would be viable as the class cards not used in aggro decks have some interesting possibilities. Control Warrior to be the pick for next expansion to rebound.
Best Expansion: Journey to Un'Goro (Best Balance and most diversity.)
Hall of Fame Cards You Miss the Most: Sylvanas Windrunner (No contest)
Most Painful Nerf: Fiery War Axe (Thanks for destroying the most important card from the class! Making it worse forever....) Wtf: Naga Sea Witch (Got nerfed from 4 to 5 mana or what ?!?!?!)
Favorite Card Art From New Expansions: Shimmering Courser
Most Annoying Deck to Play Against: Old Jade Druid, before nerfs and Skulking Geist. "Honorable mention": Old Quest Rogue with 2x Gang Up.
Favorite Quest: Fire Plume's Heart (Warrior) Boring to play after a while, but at least somewhat decent with the old Fiery War Axe.
Best Death Knight: Bloodreaver Gul'dan (Warlock) Simply OP, a N'Zoth, the Corruptor for demons with a better Bash as the hp. Most fun: Deathstalker Rexxar (Hunter) Each game is different, and what feels better then clearing the board with a Exploding Bloatbat + poisonous Zombeast? Honorable mention: Shadowreaper Anduin (Priest) to destroy Naga Sea Witch and her giant buddies.
Most OP Legendary Weapon: Aluneth (Mage) Because Wild Warlock does not need the Skull of the Man'ari, because of Voidcaller.
Class with the Best New Cards: Warlock (Sadly Naga Giants Warlock is in another dimension and Cube/Control is not "bad" either.) "Honorable mention": Freeze Shaman Kappa
Good point about Aluneth. I voted for it without thinking about Voidcaller.
Best death knight? The one I crafted in gold Frost Lich Jaina! It's pure fun...
Flooding the board with Water Elementals not only is powerful, she also gives lifesteal to all elementals making elemental mage pretty viable!
FLJ is also amazing against aggro decks, I recall a moment from not so long ago, I played against a face hunter who managed to strike me down to 5 hp. Hunter had no cards in his hand but had few beasts that could easly finish me off next turn...
I had few elementals on the board but no hope of winning, until Jaina arrived in her full golden glory! I activated the card and started eliminating his beasts... Then the innkeeper announced "Your oponnent left" finishing the game.
Oh boy... making aggro ragequit is so satisfying...
DKs > Legendary Weapons > Quest cards
You didn't ask who the most OP Death Knight was - Mage for sure. The best for me was Rexxar. So much fun from the random zombeast generation.
You forgot about Gul'Dan ;)
Favourite expansion: Journey to Un'Goro - by far. Many viable decks from lot of classes, no god tier decks.
Worst expansion: Knights of the Frozen Throne - pushing stupid aggro decks with Prince 2, Bonemare, 9/9 class legendaries turned out to be bad, Highlander Priest introduced, destroyed healthy Un'Goro meta
Favourite deck: Quest Warrior - I love Warrior and this year this was the only viable Warrior deck.
Most annoying to play against: Exodia Mage - by far. I hate playing against decks that you cannot interact with. Playing against Exodia Mage is very annoying not because you lose a lot of games but because it's not up to you if you win and it forces you to play stupid aggro decks.
*cough* *cough* highlander priest (I know you already mentioned it but it is just as interactive as quest mage and way more consistent i.e. quest mage wasn't even close to tier 1)
Un'Goro was also my favorite expansion but only after the Rogue Quest nerf, that deck tilted me more than anything else
Most annoying deck to play against: Big Priest. Unbelievable that I had to to put that in "other".
damn straight
I really enjoyed Rogue being at the top of the tiers for a while, even if it was with decks I didn't particularly enjoy. I would rather have Jade Rogue be the strong deck, not the pirate/Keleseth stuff, but still it was awesome being able to queue up with Rogue with no fear.
Ofc, my luck, Priest has also been dominant at the same time, which is my least favorite class opponent. Especially the Big Priest shit, it's just so ridiculous. I just don't like those high-roll decks at all, but they actually made it insanely good for Priest because of all their control tools and healing.
Glad to see Patches nerfed finally, so I don't have to deal with that shit in Wild forever, same with Raza.
A better Brodes awards i guess :) I expected more questions though, like most funny moment in HS this year.
Also, it's possible for someone to send multiple answers for the poll. You might want to look at it.
Do you remember when Blizzard said that the Grimy Goons were the most powerful gang in Gadgetzan?
Well the Jade Lotus (with the help of the Druids) proved that wasn't true... for nearly 2 years...
Couldnt stand playing against Exodia Quest mage. There was basically nothing to do against it once they started getting their win conditions. Glad it will be a harder deck to play without Ice Block in the next year!
It is a deck designed to punish bigger/greedier decks. And is weak to pressure.
Most disappointing: 4 horsemen win animation
This comment only makes sense if you have zero standard cards...
