posted a message on Weekly Card Design Competition #4.03 [SUBMISSION]

(As with all the other entries today, just pretend it has the Old Gods watermark.)

It's not like Y'Shaarj was ever intended to be played competitively. But it's so slow, it's difficult to use even in a fun deck. As much as I'm enjoying the doubled end-of-turn effects and the negative battlecries, what I really want with my card is some good old-fashioned Rush. This card can bypass taunt too - but, sorry, no face damage - and if you summon a minion with charge, the random attack will count as their first-turn attack. Up to and including Y'Shaarj, here's just some of the ways this card could entertain and infuriate your friends:

Bring back that Grim Patron synergy, with a little bit of RNG thrown in - but hey, if their board is full of 1-2 attack minions, you've got nothing to fear.

Combine with clumsy minions. Who knows what will happen?

Possessed VillagerTwilight Summoner, or Mounted Raptor, anyone? Maybe even a Harvest Golem? If you're playing wild, don't forget the Shredders. Actually, even Loot Hoarder or any other deathrattle could get utility out of this.

Don't forget that the "after" means the battlecry happens first, allowing for a bit more control that way.

posted a message on Druid minion and new hero power
    Quote from Hootanic >>

Neat community creation, but as far as the current druid power "sucking" it is a power that lets you ping for 1 damage which can be valuable. Plus if you need to change your power, just use Sir Finley.

No, the Mage HP lets you ping for 1 damage. The Druid HP does a lot of things, but does none of them particularly well - which fits perfectly with the Druid archetype. I'm not saying Druid's default HP needs a buff or anything, and I don't intend for my creation to be an every-deck card. But it gives you an option. For if you want a less sucky hero power.
(Yes, Sir Finnley also gives you that option. But it doesn't give power up your HP like the other cards I mentioned above.)
I didn't say the Druid HP is useless. It absolutely can be valuable. But compared to other HPs, it sucks. Actually, possibly more than I'd like to see something like this brought into the game, I'd like to see more Druid cards that make the Druid HP more viable as it is. But I didn't want to design those cards. I wanted to design this card. I don't understand the need for your backhanded compliment.

posted a message on Druid minion and new hero power

First of all, the Druid hero power sucks. I think most of us can agree on this.

Secondly, Druid kinda got left out of all the hero power shit. I mean, Priest has had Shadowform since classic, and then Hunter got Steamwheedle Sniper, and then TGT brought around Fallen Hero and Charged Hammer along with a bunch of other stuff - but Druid hasn't gotten anything to improve it's wimpy little tap.

    So, I present to you:

    Balancing detail under the spoiler:

First off, why doesn't it get a second tier like with Shadowform? Well, partially, because that's a lot of text, but also because giving +2/+2 or even +2/+1 or +1/+2 to a minion as a hero power is just too much, even after playing 2 cards. Unlike shadowform, the damage continues to stack, and with Blizzard nerfing removal options, it could easily become a gamebreaker. So, if it can't stack, it should have a body associated with it so you're not wasting a deckslot.

So, how much mana should it cost to get this hero power? Well, it should cost at least 3 (the cost of shadowform) and less than 6 (it's not as powerful as Justicar). 4 seems reasonable since it has a body associated with it, and Druid has ramp, but what about the second time you play the minion? I feel like you should have the opportunity to use it to "refresh" your hero power, like with Shadowform or Vilefin Inquisitor, so I chose to keep it at 3 mana.

And the stats? Well, I have no concrete reasoning here, but I didn't think it should be very far below curve, and once I decided the minion was an "Ironfur", 2/4 made sense - it'll have plenty of opportunities to catch up, especially as a beast.

Faceless Destroyer? More commonly seen in wild because of more deathrattle synergy. (also works if wild refers to the Hunter class because of more deathrattle synergy)

    similarly, Spawn of N'Zoth

    Sorry I didn't realize you weren't OP.

Ok I get what you're saying now, but it's still just. It's adding more than necessary. If you add these type of effects, you need to add removal for these types of effects, and other workarounds, that people need to start putting into their 30-card decks.

MTG has a ton of different types of effects, because it's built for that. There are not only creatures, but enchantments like I mentioned, artifacts, lands. And you get a 60-card deck to include all sorts of counters and workarounds to all of those different types of things.

In hearth, things that would be considered artifacts in MTG - like Summoning Stone, Lightwell - are just minions. And it doesn't really make sense, because you shouldn't be able to give Summoning Stone an attack value and then attack with it. But it keeps things simple, it keeps decks at 30 cards, and it keeps the board clear and organized. It's just an unnecessary way to cause effects that are better accomplished in different ways (though maybe not exactly the same).

Wait wait I should explain the whole riddle shouldn't I

You took quite the ride to find me,                         -- Refers to the Minecart wing of LoE, which is how you unlocked it.
But I'm sorry to say I'm not very powerful as I am now.       -- It's not powerful without the battlecry, and...
What are those whispers?             -- ...it wasn't powerful until WoG came out and gave rogue more deathrattle synergy.
...Maybe if we search below                          -- Fairly obvious reference to Journey Below.
I could gain a new power                               -- Gains power from deathrattle minions.
And wish for the mercy of the Old Gods.    -- Specifically, N'Zoth, who it hopes to be res'd by, but it won't

There's exactly nothing that separates minions from spells. Minion is just a body + ability. Spell is nothing more than an ability without body.
You say there's no difference, and then describe the exact difference.
Long-lasting effects in HS, even if they aren't directly attached to a body, need to appear to be attached to a body, to make it easier to understand.
First of all, so, are you saying that after playing Mistcaller, that if your opponent uses Thoughtsteal, any minions they copy won't have +1/+1? Because I didn't realize that. I'm guessing they did that specifically so that copypriest couldn't gain from Mistcaller like you do, but still they create the appearance that the effect is attached to the bodies, not to the hand.
Dragon Consort's effect is, honestly, a little weird, and I don't expect to see many similar effects in the future. I don't think it's a poorly designed card per se, but it's just a very unique design that I don't think would or should be applied a lot.
Again, C'Thun has very obvious effects, even if there are secret, behind-the-scenes workarounds, you can very plainly see your C'Thun (and theirs) getting buffed. Even if the game attaches the aura to something other than the minion, it gives the player some sort of body to see that the effect is there.
Now, you're saying you would have the player hover over the zone to see what effect was in place and how many turns it has left. Ho-lee-shit that would get crowded. What if you have 7 minions on the board? You gotta hover over the little space between them. It's not that it's difficult, it's just not conducive. You don't make UI's work like that, not even in a game.
And you didn't even address how I showed you how pointless your Ring of Frost spell is.
It's just too much. It's too cluttered, it's too awkward, it's too confusing. It's pointless.
"You had an idea, I'm telling you it's a bad one, now get out."
(ok sorry that last line was a little too mean but I love that quote)

Hope it's not too obvious... it's hard to get that perfect balance of vagueness.

posted a message on Story Time! Weird Shifter Zerus Synergy

I really wish I had a recording of this because it was so weird, and so fun.

So, I was playing my Renounce Darkness deck (not in ranked obviously), and I got Shifter Zerus from Dark Peddler some time before playing Renounce Darkness, which gave me random Druid cards.

I ended up with a Dark Arakkoa, and I thought "well ok at least it's 5 mana for a beefy taunt". But then Shifter Zerus turned into C'Thun himself! I'm already thinking like "what is gonna happen here..." so of course I have to play Dark Arakkoa. The animation where C'Thun pops up on the side of the board didn't play, so I thought it fizzled, but when I looked in my hand, the buffs were there! Well, cool, so that happened, but it doesn't really matter since it's not like I'll be able to play this C'Thun.

Next turn, Shifter Zerus turns into an Emperor Cobra... but a 5/6! It kept the +3/+3 buff that it got from Dark Arakkoa. And every minion it shifted into after that had +3/+3. I eventually played it as a 10/10 Obsidian Destroyer, which wasn't the best it could've been but I was losing tempo.

It's a weird-as-hell combo that's almost completely impossible to replicate on purpose, and not really worth trying, but dude it was sweeeet.

TL;DR: Shifter Zerus transforms into C'Thun. I play Dark Arakkoa and it gets +3/+3; and then every minion it transforms into after that keeps the +3/+3.

The zones aren't really the problem here. The problem is the long-lasting effect. In hearthstone, spells can't have continuous effects, only minions can. If you want a spell that has a continuous effect, it has to give a minion that effect. It's not like in MTG where we have Enchantments that stay on the board independent of minions.

Also, let's look at your first spell, Ring of Frost. Say you cast it on the left side of the board, well then your opponent will just summon all their minions to the right side and completely ignore it! If you place it on the right side of the board, then it's totally OP against Paladin and sometimes Shaman.

What I would prefer is to see more cards like Cone of Cold and Explosive Shot, but useful enough to get run more often.
