The reason the beginning of the season is so difficult is because you will be matched up against varying opponents who may be above the rank you typically play in. Everyone's rank resets and it depends on the amount of stars you get for where you are placed.
I play mainly Handlock, it's still very viable in this meta. Currently encountering allot of druids, priests and mech mages on the ladder. But at least a lot less face hunters.
i normally main control warrior but have actually switched to handlock for the time being and it has been rewarding me well so far but may swutch back later when hunter learns its still good

Handlock is a viable deck in any type of meta. Even with BGH being run in most of the midrange/control decks, it's still able to put down enough threaths for the opponent to not be able to handle them all.
With the addition of Antique Healbot, now Handlock as what it lacks the most, healing. (Don't question why it's my profile picture, I love this card so much).
Handlock has the same problem. It lack teching space for including enough of everything. You have to cut something consistent to make place for something else that is even as consistent. There is not much space for innovation in handlock... which is my main struggle. I've tried so many different versions of it, I'm still a big fan of the diversified handlock that runs one copy of the combo and no Mortal Coil. Faceless will be the MVP this next season, I predict.

Less aggro. Mechmage is the most popular deck right now. Even though it's more a of a tempo deck, it's usually decided by starting hands.
But we still have less aggro deck types to deal with. MechMage was popular last season too... it's kind of an invalid statement to say it's gone. There is less aggro. I confirm you. The database also back me. On NA and EU (doesn't care for other servers).

Couple of interesting thoughts from this thread (mostly because I don't want to enter the debate).
1) Interesting people still use the term "walletwarrior" to describe a deck in a game that's been out for over a year.
2) Welcome to 2015 where people insult others for varying opinions
3) I'm glad I've always been a big fan of midrange decks as they are rarely hated on, woo!
Wallet Warrior is a negative description of this wonderful control deck that requires a lot of thinking to make it effective. You are right on this.
Unfortunately, the Internet is full of people that did not learn what respect was.
Midrange is just too good to attract some hate. People are normally mad against aggro because they feel helpless when they lose (normally due to their poor mulligan/teching of their deck... but you know, it's easier to blame the opponent then looking at your own mistakes).

Like i said in some of the previous post Mech mage will flood ladder, on EU atleast not sure for NA. Went to rank 10 today and 90% of decks were mech mages. Why ppl hate this deck? because its the most consistent agro deck we ever had so far. I am mostly a midrange /ctrl player myself and i never had any problems with agro decks in general but tbh this shit is crazy :P
no zoo, no hunter, even old school pala rush could not bring 5 minions at turn 2. Ofc stuff like that dont happen always, but thats the trick- when it does you lost a game almost for sure unless you are rogue and can early AOE, since mech minions are prety tough on hp and can survive most of the aoes of other classes( cons, swipe, storm(pray to rngesus),ww and so on)
On the other side even if u dont pull out mechwarpers early on you are still in decent place and can win easily due to great stats of the mech minions so you can just snowball from good trades. also they run dr.balanced and antonidas for end game finishes.
IMO the most *OP* things about MM are :
Mechwarpers ( they shoudnt stack)
- Mad scientist ( this card bothers me the MOST since for 2 mana u get 2/2 body and a played secret worth of 3 mana, thats one insane value, its a huge tempo boost, imo secret should be added into your hand or something)
-chuga chuga ( sometimes this lil budy wins the game itself if you cant deal with it, warriors, rogues, druids are prety fcked up when it locks you)
So at the end of the day i get why ppl play it, its cheap and efficient and everyone wants to win, thats like the point of laddering right. Is it OP? probably a little bit yeah. Is it unwinable? ofc not like any other deck it has its own counters, for me atm teched priest works like wonders altho other matchups are abit tricky.
I have to concur with others, the meta is still typical early season meta. Lots of aggressive decks, but that's expected. What I'm enjoying now though is the experimentation in the decks I'm seeing. No more typical Undertaker decks that have been around since Naxx. I'm actually seeing hunter running Mech!
The other thing I've noticed is that there aren't any "face" decks at the moment. The aggro decks are Tempo in nature. This is a good thing in my opinion as Tempo decks actually interact with your plays while Face decks were just boring "attempt to survive the onslaught and if you do you win". Your opponent generally didn't care what you did.
Oh, and there ARE a ton of Mad Scientist-Mirror Entity Mech Mage. In my testing various Mech Warlock builds (I wanted to make Mimiron's Head work) this was by far the most common deck, but still only 20% of what I faced.
ANtique healbot doesn't clear board with 5low cost creatures from zoo and hunter
It can help lategame in combination with Shadowflame. Plus if you have the room in your deck for a Recombulator it can turn out in a nice Sludge Belcher for example.
Undertaker nerf won't and shouldn't stop aggro! Everybody was grampy about Hunter and they were quite right, the undertaker + the hero power is just too OP. But now, everybody is mad at mech mage but why? Because it's good and aggro? Aggro is a way of playing just like midrange and control, it's not brainless, it's about about early board control. It's there, deal with it.
Your deal with it doesn't do a thing here. Undertaker + Hero Power wasn,t OP... Hunter hero power is ok..., get your things right before lying.

So what decks are the hard counter to cancer mage in your opinion?
I asked this same question, Rogue is apparently the answer.... but... what build of Rogue?

Yep. Many, many mages with many, many reoccurring nightmares.

Dirty little secret, mad scientist with mirror entity is way better than mechwarper.

When is the right time to play Explosive Sheep against mechmage?
