- You own a golden copy of the card = Do nothing - You own a regular copy of the card = Do nothing EXCEPT for the common rarity (Craft Goldens, DE afterwards = 10 dust profit per card) + if you like Goldens, you can craft them at reduced cost (see below overview with calculations) - You don't own a copy of the card = Craft golden copy/copies for "free", as you get the dust back when the expansion hits. (In case of lack of dust, craft regular copy/copies instead.)
Note1: Max dust rewarded is 1 copy per legendary, 2 copies for other rarities. Dust is granted just for your golden copies, not your regular, if you happen to own both regular and golden copies. See bottom of post for a visual overview of dust returns.
If you own the regular version, but are thinking about creating the golden versions (because you are a collector or fancy golden cards); please see below the opportunity cost. Calculations are per individual copy of the card, so multiply by the desired amount of copies to get final dust value.
Note: Essentially it's possible to craft the golden cards without loss, because you can DE them at a later stage if you'll need the dust again. If you know you'll need the dust, it's not worth the effort, as there is no dust gain except for the golden commons (10 dust each).
Ragnaros the Firelord / Sylvanas Windrunner Don't do anything = +1600 Craft Golden = -3200+3200= 0 (i.e. crafting golden opportunity cost = 1600. Which equals the DE value = good deal) Craft Golden, dust regular = -3200+3200+400 = +400 (i.e. replacing regular for golden opportunity cost = 1200) Craft Golden, Dust golden = -3200 + 3200 +1600 = +1600 (i.e. Same result as doing nothing, so don't bother if you are doing it just for the dust)
Someone with all regular copies would get: 1600*2+100*2+40*6=3200+200+240=3640 dust Someone with all golden copies would get: 3200*2+800*2+400*6=6400+1600+2400=10400 dust
My post described that if you own a regular copy, you already would get 1600+, so there is no gain. Craft Golden costs 3200, then you get 3200, after which you can DE the golden for 1600, which is the same as if you didn't do anything.
Of course, if you didn't own the card, you should craft the golden and can then DE it if you don't care about wild, which is indeed 1600+
Anyone know whether we get the dust for both normal AND golden cards if we have both?
If I had Golden Rag and Normal Rag, I can't put them both in a deck, but they are technically 2 different cards... so would I get 4800 dust?
It's just the golden cards that count then. For your example, you'd get 3200 dust, because you can only put one ragnaros in your deck at a time, and they count the golden ones in this case (luckily ;) )

Just to clarify, I have normal Slyvannis... Since I have that card, I can get the dust to craft her golden version and get rid of the normal version?
So after the patch hits, I'm going to be 6400 dust richer(this+10 buccaneers). I'm not even mad, that's amazing.

Craft Golden, dust regular = -3200+3200+400 = +400 (i.e. replacing regular for golden = 1200)
So you'd replace your regular sylvanas with a golden one, but lose out on 1200 dust, because if you don't do anything, you'd get 1600.
and I just craft the golden version right?
I'm not sure what you mean by this? If you own the regular and craft the golden, you'll end up losing out on 1600 dust. Because you paid 3200 dust for the golden, get 3200 dust for the golden, but won't get the 1600 for the regular version. In other words, you'd be creating a golden sylvanas for 1600 dust (still a good deal if you are a collector).

Thanks for the guide! Unfortunately there will always be an existence of *certain* people that will never understand how this all works and we can expect questions on this topic until the new expansion releases...and probably questions after as well.
I'll leave a comment in this thread to make sure I can find it. I don't get why this all has to be so confusing I wish there would be an article with a table on Hearthpwn or something.
So if i craft a normal rag i'll get a refound after he moves to wild?
If you craft him now, you'll be awarded the dust when the new expansion goes live. So answer is: Yes If you have the dust, it's therefore best to craft Golden Rag :)
So after the patch hits, I'm going to be 6400 dust richer(this+10 buccaneers). I'm not even mad, that's amazing.
Well you won't get the dust for these until after the rotation, which is probably a couple months after the patch hits.
FYI: The nerf patch and the rotation don't happen at the same time. The nerf patch is expected to go live end of February, and the new expansion is expected to go live end of April.
Too bad i have neither ragnaros nor dust to craft him.
I'd say, try to gather enough dust to craft him. If not rag, go for some of the other cards if you don't own those yet. And if nothing else, you can craft the golden commons and DE them afterwards for a net 10 dust gain per card.
The best profit you can make is 2000 dust if you got one of the legendaries from a pack, get the 1600 bonus+400 if you disenchant it. Thats the best you can do. Next best profit is 400 dust if you crafted it with your dust and disenchant it after the expansion.
Guys, it's this simple:
- You own a golden copy of the card = Do nothing
- You own a regular copy of the card = Do nothing EXCEPT for the common rarity (Craft Goldens, DE afterwards = 10 dust profit per card) + if you like Goldens, you can craft them at reduced cost (see below overview with calculations)
- You don't own a copy of the card = Craft golden copy/copies for "free", as you get the dust back when the expansion hits.
Note2: It IS possible to DE cards after the expansion hits (against regular DE value only) even though Hearthpwn news mentioned it not to be possible; http://www.hearthpwn.com/news/2247-some-classic-cards-moving-to-wild-three-expansions
There is no mention of this in the official Blizzard post; http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/blog/20475356/a-year-of-mammoth-proportions-2-16-2017
and Ben Brode already confirmed it on twitter: https://twitter.com/bdbrode/status/832304105624178688
Note3: You WILL get the full dust rewards if you didn't own and get any of these cards after the announcement, as confirmed by Brode:

Ice Lance / Conceal / Power Overwhelming

Craft Golden, Dust regular = -400 +400 +5 = +5
Craft Golden, Dust Golden = -400 +400 +50 = +50 (i.e. easy 10 dust for people who don't care about goldens)

Have 3200 dust to start and normal Rag/Sylv
Craft golden version, 3200 - 3200 = 0
Get 3200 when they move to HOF status. 0 + 3200 = 3200
Get 3200 when you DE it. 3200 + 3200 = 6400
6400 > 3200
I don't see how hard that is to comprehend.
