It is super annoying. Maybe they need to add a feature to the forums where if you are to create a new thread you need to enter some sort of code to "prove you are human".
The developers for this site have previously indicated that their current technology removes a majority of spam before it even hits the forum. The 'prove you are a human' thing sounds obvious at first, but would apparently just lead to the spammers stepping up efforts to spam within thread instead of creating new ones. The best way to eliminate spam is to never buy anything or even click on it. These assholes do it because some people are stupid enough to respond.

I can't enjoy the forum if all I see on the homepage is a couple of spam threads with strange numbers and codes. Can someone tell me what this is?

Maybe something failed in the anti-spam measures. There's a weekly spam attack, and affects mostly during weekend.
My recommendation is to report the "user". It's faster and require less reports.
I already did it, and would recommend you to do it, too.
It's Babaji, a bot that plagued the official forums for months and months.
