When you spawn a lot of really small minions in order to buff them... like violet teacher or imp master, than you savage roar or bloodlust usually. You can't summon those minions directly.
It can also refer to deck which take advantage of flooding thee board with small minions then boosting them with 1 spell i.e. Savage Roar in druid or a Bloodlust shaman deck
You're correct that it's an MTG term. It meant creatures (minions) that are not regular cards in either players' deck or sideboard. In a physical game, you'd need to find something to represent those minions, hence "token".
It doesn't quite make sense for a computer game, but most TCG players are used to it.
Edit: thanks guys. its like a broken fire-hose of answers lol. You guys have a great community.
I was expecting "look that shit up" "use google" "search button is on the top right" and you dont even have a noobie forum to direct posts to lol.
props

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean.
Mid-range? ok
aggro? ok
Zoo? ok
Face? ok [although i have never played the deck i understand the idea
Control? ok
Miracle? ok [I figured out how to associate miracle rogue with miracle hunter pretty quick]
But wtf is token supposed to mean? is it an old MTG term?
I look up token deck and I see yu-gi-oh and the description doesn't seem to fit as it specifically describes summoning tokens.

A Token is something that a card makes, Unleash the Hounds make 1/1 beasts they are tokens, Violent Teacher makes 1/1 token.
BTW: There is no Miracle Hunter, just UTH and buzzard hah
A token is a small minion that is usually summoned from a card effect such as the Violet Apprentice summoned by the Violet Teacher or the boar from the Razorfen Hunter.
It can also refer to deck which take advantage of flooding thee board with small minions then boosting them with 1 spell i.e. Savage Roar in druid or a Bloodlust shaman deck
ahh ok that makes sense thanks guys. I wish street fighter forums had this kind of userbase lol. less than 15 minutes and I get multiple responses.

so would a harvest golem be considered token due to death-rattle or is that a different subject? [I assume it is seperate]
would cairne be considered token?
would feral spirit be considered token?
Or am i thinking about this incorrectly.
I get the main idea, im just trying to figure out the hearthstone application. My MTG days were when i was under 13 so not so relevant lol

Yeah, the long and short is that tokens are cards, but not cards that you can collect. They are created from other cards.
Here is a complete list of token cards:
