This thread was inspired by Machinae's Workbench. It's not an expansion, or an adventure, or a particular set of cards; it's where I can put some of my ideas and perhaps get some responses to them.
It also will allow me to keep track of imgur links so I can delete these cards from my overfull HearthCards collection without losing them forever.
I decided to look through my HearthCards collection, and I found about 20 cards I figured were pretty good. Some of them were things I'd thrown together at some point when an idea hit me, some of them are going to be in my work-in-progress ICC adventure... two of them are from weekly competitions.
I might comment on them if I have the time, but for now I'll just add them :)
Cards have been posted! Any thoughts? I'm not paying a ton of attention to balance, mainly to ideas, so I'd appreciate any comments on whether any cards are over or under powered.
Cards that stuck out to me were Renewal and Felhunter for overpowered, as well as classic Blizzard syndrome with your Shaman cards, they feel a bit weak. On a different note I love devourer of souls, lady vashj, and orcish juggernaut.
You think Renewal is overpowered? That's interesting... to be honest I see it mainly as a way to counter silence & debuffs or to remove damage, and for 6 mana I think it's pretty fair...
I do agree Felhunter might be pushing it. I want to keep the design, but maybe I should change it to a 3/1 or 2/1 so it's within ping range?
The Shaman cards I was also thinking about... I hadn't considered Rehgar needing a buff, but maybe increasing the cost reduction to 3 would work? As for Elder Shaman, I just realized it's a strictly weaker Druid of the Talon. Maybe I'll increase the bonus spell damage to 2.
Devourer of Souls is actually something I threw together in the "Make the Minion" thread when someone asked me to make an 8-mana 1/2. Lady Vashj was going to be my submission to giants design competition, until I was informed it didn't qualify since it had 4 lines of card text.
Orcish Juggernaut uses the Call to Action mechanic, which I realize I haven't explained. So here it is:
Basically, Orcish Juggernaut deals 1 damage to an enemy when it attacks your hero while the minion is in your hand, only on the enemy's turn and only if you have 1 unspent mana. Think of it as a Secret, except you pay for it when it triggers, playing the card nullifies the Secret, and your opponent doesn't see it coming. Calls to Action can trigger multiple times.
Anyway, glad to hear about the cards you like and glad to receive feedback on the ones you don't :D
I have some trouble wrapping my head around this mechanic. If you have 3 mana left over and you have a card with CtA (3) and one with CtA (1) do both trigger if their condition is the same? Does it reveal the card when the effect triggers, and if so does it happen everytime? If it doesn't reveal the card then new players might be confused, and if it does, a repeated animation could become tiring, as opposed to the "When drawn"-mechanic where it only has to display the card triggering once.
This is not a mechanic I would go for, honestly. It's interesting, but impractical.
I'd imagine it would be an equivalent of how Deathrattles and such work - whichever card you drew first will trigger first. It would reveal the card once, and then it wouldn't do so again, which couldbe confusing for new players but also doesn't bore anyone. It would also show the card in the play history.
I've added a new Shaman card, Draenei Totemic, which I think is pretty nice. Not really sure. Here it is.
Renewal could be 1-2 mana, please explain how you value this extremely niche kind of ability as 6 mana?
Your Shaman cards don't help shaman come into the meta at all. These cards are really weak and by that i mean they should cost less for what they do. We value HS cards by how unfair they are and class cards specifically need to be unfair and Shaman is in the worst spot right now for this.
Rapid Fire - Sexy and excellent. The value here brings in weird cards you'd never dream of using, like Ball of Spiders and Cobra Shot. Love this.
Mark for Death - Should be an enchantment. Think of Hunters Mark and Equality. Those are both 0-low cost cards that destroy the minions defense. This card is inferior to both of those with the until end of turn limit.
Prayer - Too OP when mixed with Auchenai. Imagine getting 1 shot by this? No thanks.
Cool Ideas man keep it up.
EDIT: Also Devourer of Souls should be 10 mana and class specific considering its a better mind control even at 10 Mana.
Renewal felt like it could have a lot of value, but now that I think about it it's not incredibly powerful except in a few decks... actually, I can't think of any :/
I'll look into making the Shaman cards more unfair :P You're right, Shaman needs some semi-OP cards.
Glad to hear you like Rapid Fire! I actually was thinking of Explosive Shot when I made this one. I figured it wasn't OP since Hunter really lacks late-game spells that turn the game around like Pyroblast, Twisting Nether, Tree of Life, etc.
I balanced Mark for Death the way I did because, comparing it to Hunter's Mark, Rogue is better at taking down a minion with it. But I do agree, thinking about it now, that it could be permanent.
Prayer was specifically designed around Auchenai - note the "friendly character."
Rapid fire is hilariously op sounding but i think in actual play it would be balanced enough but still great. It would be extremely nice in Lock and Load hunter, and would surely string the deck together. Great nerf to Felhunter. I also like Vicious Darkfiend, big fan of discard viability. Rehgar is excellent now but i would even consider (3) mana reduction, just enough to cover all the spells but not enough for free Fireguard Destroyers' so you can't drop: Rehgar, x2 Fireguard Destroyer, x2 Earth Elemental, Neptulon and spell empty. Which would be ridiculous on it's own but with Emperor Thaurissan, you'd be looking at the new Grim patron, except it'd be board clear or bust.
Rapid Fire will limit me a little when it comes to making large hunter spells, but with the spells currently in the game I think it's balanced :P
Glad to hear you like the Felhunter nerf, it's still a powerful card but it only lasts one turn, which is why I figured it was safe to keep the 3/2 stats.
Rehgar feels kind of too good now. Maybe keep the (4) reduction but only apply it to spells? Or maybe it's good to have a really powerful combo card for Shaman.
New keyword: Empower. When you play a minion with Empower (x), you may choose to pay X additional mana crystals to grant some sort of extra benefit. Yes, this is directly copied from MtG. I haven't made a card with Empower yet, but I will soon :)
Anyway! Three new cards, spellcaster weapons! I think they're pretty good :D
Wow, this is an old thread. Figured I'd pop in real quick and say I still want to keep adding stuff to this, I just... forgot about it, to be quite honest. I've made a lot more cards and I'm looking forward to posting them.
