I'm an old school player that's been around before naxrammas release, I've been legend a couple of times and achieved all gold classes about 6 months - 1 year ago can't remember when I stopped playing. The last meta that I played was before the lich expansion when the quest legendary cards were released. Not really sure what's been released since then.
My favorite archetype is Control and a bit of combo (miracle rogue/grim patron/malydruid) It looks like I may have missed a good control meta with those strong legendary lich cards. My favorite class is Warlock followed by Paladin - Warrior. My favorite deck of all time was old school handlock with molten/mountain giants & leeroy.
I've played casually mainly to catch up on the new quests, I crafted the card that gives you access to random decks from all classes and did enjoy some of what I played.
My question is what are the top decks that would fit my archetype, what packs should I buy and what are some of the older sets cards that are worth crafting. (remember I played until the legendary quests release so I'll have some of those) How many packs would it take for me to catch up on this meta? I do have some old golden cards that I could disenchant (Ragnaros/Sylvanas) as they have been put into wild now :( I would only be interested in playing standard. Any other advice is welcome.
Btw what's up with the old usernames? I can't access my previous account anymore I had to log using a twitch login.
If you want to play control, you will have some choices. Warlock, Warrior, Mage and Druid have all viable control decks. Druid maybe more combo decks, but they also control the game before the combo...
I guess the respective deathknight (KotfT) is mandatory, at least for Warlock, Druid or Mage. Warrior likely needs Dr Boom from BP.
The strongest cards overall are probably in KotfT and K&C. But it strongly depends on the class you want to play and what deck you want to make. I recommend to check some of the decks on the main page to see what cards are in the decks you want to play.
Greetings fellow hearthpwn players.

Older sets:
Un'Goro (your last one)
Knights of the Frozen Throne (KotfT)
Kobolds & Catacombs (K&C)
These will all cycle out in Spring 2019.
New are Witchwood (WW) and Boomsday Project (BP)

Well from your descriptions I would recommend...
Malydruid- It's quite good, though you will need to invest a little in some KotFT cards- specifically the druid DK.
Odd Warrior- Its a pretty strong/ anti aggro deck that mostly uses the newer cards that will be around for a while.
Even Warlock- It's pretty good too and uses Mountain Giants. Again however you will need to invest in some KotFT cards- specifically the Warlock DK.
