First off, fantastic guide, one of the best I have ever read :)
My advice is quite unusual since it might make you cringe a little. My advice is to play Nozdormu. Quest Mages usually take a lot time during their turn, so Nozdormu is a great option (unless you are running a combo deck).
That's my first piece of advice (and the only cringe worthy one). My second is to use spells on enemy minions. Counterspell is an amazing choice and so is that spell that turns an enemy minion into a 1-1 sheep. Both of these secrets counter the combo.
I have had a number of people play nozdormu against me. Usually off a discover or an evolve, I have never lost to it. I also play mostly on a phone so that slows me down a bit more than on a computer too. Usually it is off a discover or an evolve, but you can get the quest off before nozdormu ends then you just send it the first 2 fireballs and kill the opponent. It is a challenge, but dirty rat is better tech.
so yeah if you can discover nozdormu I would pick it. But don’t tech it in to your deck.
I don’t have a great winrate as quest mage. I haven’t kept great track but somewhere a little above 50%. And I can see that is a deck that is not super fun to lose too. But I enjoy it because it is a really hard deck to play.
Some decent strategies. Thanks everyone! Exodia Mage can be so painful sometimes because you know what is coming and a lot of the time there isn't anything you can do. I'll definitely try these strategies!
There are 2 different factors in board clearing. 1 Throughout the game as they drop minions, their minions aren't going to kill you, they are going to trade into your minions to prevent you from doing face damage. So unless you are protecting a major source of damage don't waste your resources killing their minions. Instead go face. They will usually trade into your minons.
Also Quest Mage can lose games because they are out of board space. Sometimes I play 5 Apprentices instead of 4 (2 Molten Reflection and a Simulacrum) so I can Cabalist's Tomefor free and finish the quest. Which means my combo pieces can take 5 or 6 slots. If I have Mirror Image on the board, or a silenced Doomsayer It's possible that I run out of board space and can't finish the combo.
I know you have a board full of huge minions, and you just popped the block at 1. But don't kill anything on their board you don't have to. You'll win a few more games.
Ok that one is pretty interesting. Never thought about it that way... So maybe Marin the Fox could be a thing. Loot plus 2 silenced doomsayers -> gg ^^
Nozdormu saved me a few times. Nothing funnier than them running out of time.
Anyone who says it’s a hard deck to pilot is full of shit. SO easy.
I can attest that milling is a great strategy. I start milling right away rather than at the end, because if I fuck their combo, I don’t need to fatigue them. They cowardly concede. Lol all day!

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the guide!

I am looking forward to making an elemental quest mage once Kobolds & Catacombs comes out.
Kripp is playing a different deck. But this happens to him:
