HbG Meta Warrior for September Season
- Deck is very strong versus the current Hunter meta
- Deck is generally strong versus Midrange
- Have a solid finisher
- Is a dust heavy deck
Intro
This deck was made after I was done messing around with druid and ready to climb the ladder at day 2 of the fresh new Septemeber season. Note! I used this deck to climb up to rank 5 and some games into it. I do not claim this is an 80% winrate legend deck and it's clearly stated it's not. Please stop with the unnecessary discussions about me stating it's 80% winrate with rank 5. The deck was built from ground by me. Taking the principles of the ever so popular control Warrior.
I changed it up with some cards to make it strong against Hunter, and well simply the currentley silence worthy meta. Note! I do not claim this deck is perfect or will grant you anywhere near the same winrate as me. Im sure the deck could be stronger if the manpower was there to test tweaks over a period of time. But this works for me, and I want to share it with the hearthstone world to help people aswell get feedback on my deckbuilding!
The deck - And it's playstyle
Upon first viewing some people might say the deck lacks damage. But I think you will be suprised how good this deck is to get to the specific situation where Grommash Hellscream can come into play and destroy the other hero portrait.
The Playstyle of this deck is very similar to any other control warrior decks. To take advantage of the armor gain! If its to allow yourself a use of weapon to clear without dropping dangerously low on health, to remove something with Shield Slam, or simply make you surivive longer.
In general just focus on keeping the board clear and in you're favor. Be smart about your silences, always look to get value out of Acolyte of Pain and Armorsmith. The Frothing Berserker is in the deck as a type of removal drawer and if left alive. He becomes a great tool to dish an extra 4-8 damage on face or taking out a big minion.
The deck deals very well with mid range and aggro decks. It destroys Hunters and does well versus almost any other class. But you will find yourself struggling versus the heavy value control decks like Shaman and Paladin as they are the worst possible matchups.
Note! This deck is much stronger when you have something on the board! The board is your friend people!
The stars of the deck
Whirlwind and Cleave: Two cards people have mixed feelings about. Whirlwind saw a big decrease in play due to the Naxxramas cards Death's Bite and Unstable Ghoul. But I find the card to help me out notably in the current meta as it can help setup good trades, even direct kills with another card like Cleave. Also never discredit it's great synergy with Armorsmith and Acolyte of Pain! The Cleave is really good to help remove boards and is excellent if comboed with Execute or other form of damage. It will put big dents in the enemy board.
Frothing Berserker: This card might suprise people. But I find it to be great to draw removal or simply punish aoe spells. The card also is great to place behind our taunt Sludge Belcher versus Hunter as it then very fast could deal huge amount of damage. Berserker also could very fast just run away with a game if played early.
Death's Bite: Warriors best new friend! This card is amazing to combo using the last charge with Warriors finisher Grommash Hellscream on turn 8 means you have a 14 damage finisher. Also never undervalue the last charge of this weapon! It can remove any 5 health minion if targeted. Infact if you face a 6/5 and a 4/4 board this weapon on it's last charge + Execute removes it.
Spellbreaker: This card has simply been performing excellent! It will always have a target, and if you read you're opponent and predict the deck. You could find something very powerful to silence (like Sylvannas, Savannah Highmane). Nothing feels better to silence a Savannah Highmane and kill it instant without seeing the 2; 2/2's deathrattle going off. Also this card is huge in helping our matchups versus Priest and Druid!
Stampeding Kodo: The meta is awesome for Kodo's right now! Most classes have made their decks more fluid with early cards from Naxxarams and Kodo can take advantage of that. Also Kodo will always kill something versus classes like Hunter, Warlock and even Druid and Priest to mention a few! Also hes still a 3/5 a good body that will help control the board.
How to mulligan
Hunter: You wanna look to keep any 2-3 cost minion! Where my favorites are Armorsmith and Cruel Taskmaster. The best is to get one of these comboed with a Fiery War Axe or another 2-3 cost minion. Other cards that are helpful are Cleave, Execute or Shield Slam to remove Animial Companions. Also if you have a bad hand don't be scared to keep Stampeding Kodo or Death's Bite.
Priest: Any Weapon! Also if you have a Shield Slam + Shield Block combo keep it. Would also recommend to look for a fast Spellbreaker as a silence on a Power Word Shielded target, Dark Cultiest or even a buffed undertaker is great. Other than that any of the 2-3 drops can be helpful.
Warlock: This depends on what type of Warlock but due to the fact that the season is young Zoo is a safebet. Look for Fiery War Axe, Cleave, and don't undervalue a Shield Slam as it can remove any 2 health minion on turn 3 with hero power. But if you have it Armorsmith + Cruel Taskmaster is a good hand with Coin aswell! And here Sludge Belcher and Stampeding Kodo can be held if initial mulligan is bad.
Rogue: Only faced Miracle so don't know about the new firebat deck. But in general: Fiery War Axe is good as it can kill 2 of the Miracle's 3/3 drops. And you want to get minions so the 2-3 cost minion combo again like a Armorsmith + Acolyte of Pain or Frothing Bersker is a great opening play. Do not keep high end cards or Whirlwind.
Druid: Look to get 2-3 drops that can combo togther. Most druid also packs a good early game so Fiery War Axe is a great card here! Most of these are also minions with deathrattle that spawns 1 health minions so Whirlwind is not terrible either. Other than that in this matchup be very careful with Spellbreakers! If you suspect a late game taunt Druid you want to silence Ancient of Wars or value cards like Slyvanas/Carine only. Unless you will have a clear path to lethal after silence.
Warrior: At first I tought I would have a bad time in the mirror since most other Warriors are heavier. But I found myself often having much higher tempo, and beeing able to sneak in 2-5 damage several turns while i dealt with his board. MULLIGAN: Look for your tempo cards like Acolyte of Pain, Armorsmith and Frothing Bersker. Also dont be scared to keep a single Execute to backup a early 2/3 drop to keep the board in your favor. This goes without saying but the Harrison Jones is often huge in this matchup! Especially if it kills an enemy Death's Bite as it will still deal 1 damage to everything on board. You can abuse that with Armorsmith, Acolyte of Pain, or maybe even to kill of his board!
Other classes I have yet to really meet. But I can tell you that Paladin and Shaman's will be difficult and if you are against a Mage make sure you kill Water Elementals.
Replacements Tweaks
Harrison Jones -> Azure Drake is acceptable and is in general better versus classes without weapons. But be careful when using Whirlwind's as it also effect you're board state.
Cairne Bloodhof -> The Black Knight or maybe Sunwalker. They reason of including Cairne in the original deck is that I need something to work the board and Cairne is a beast at doing that with his 8/10 total stats. But Black Knight can potenially get higher value but cannot work the board nearly aswell without usage of his battlecry. Sunwalker could work as the Sunwalker is often seen on as the pour man's Cairne.
1x Spellbreaker -> The Black Knight I get that people think the 2x Spellbreaker seems wierd. But I would still recommend people to test it out. But if you feel like it could be replaced my advise is The Black Knight. And I suppose if you want to work in Geddon or Brawl this is the slot to do it with.
Frothing Berserker -> Kor`kron Elite It's possible to run Kor`kron Elite instead of Frothing Berserker but notice the card comes later into play, and does not have the same trading power in length but can kill Azure Drakes, Misha and other 4 health minions instant.
1x Whirlwind -> Unstable Ghoul I wouldn't recommend taking out 2 Whirlwind's for 2 Ghouls. Whirlwind is just so good to combo with AoP, Armorsmith and Execute.
My games as of Seeptember 8th
- Hunter: 17-4
- Priest: 4-1
- Warrior: 3-0
- Warlock: 4-2
- Mage: 1-0
- Druid: 3-0
- Shaman: 0-2
- Paladin: 0-1
- Rogue: 4-0
Edits: 10.sept Im back looking on my Warrior deck after testing out some other classes. Im currently looking at tweaks for the deck. Also thanks for the positive feedbacks and intrest in my deck!
Without Brawl, shaman is unwinnable. So as the meta is shifting towards shaman/priest I think this one needs an overhaul (take kodo out for brawl is obligatory IMHO)
Do you think you will change something after the Nerfhammer?
Simple question, No Brawl?
Aight, saving up until I have enough to craft Grommash before I start using this deck then. Replacing Jones with Loatheb. :)
Shaman's are difficult and probably the worst matchup for any control warrior. But if the meta changes towards Shaman beeing the favorite there will be changes to Warrior decks to fight them and the meta around Shaman if they where too take the throne.
With the new patch confirmed we can only wait and see.
Is there anything I can replace Grommash and Harrison Jones with until I have enough dust to make them? (Grommash first, obviously.)
I have most other legendaries/cards available.
Grommash is a must have in every war control deck, i don't think you can replace him since he often is your finisher...
Good deck, thanks man. I really like the idea to have two spellbreaker!
I also replaced Frothing Berserker with Geddon, and Kodo with Ysera. It works better for me to against Priest and Shaman, and also Warrior.
Forgot to mention, I like the idea to replace Unstable Ghoul with whirlwind too.
Also, I do not like Alex, which I found is only helpful to against Warrior. However, without Alex, it is also extremely difficult to win a Warrior with Alex...
Glad to hear. And agre that Frothing Berserker and Kodo are very easy replaced with other tech cards.
Not the biggest fan of Alex either and one of the main reason i made a more board synergy warrior deck.
2x Spellbreakers might seem wierd but I find them often to work miracles. But as stated in the information to the deck this is not a highly tested deck. It's just a deck that really worked for me when I started to climb early this season.
Currentley working on tweaks to make it more a allround deck that still crushes Hunter. And I have said to others that Ghoul versus Whirlwind is often to preference. But I still think you should run atleast one Whirlwind. The card is just huge with the Whenever minions like dropping Acolyte drawing a card and executing your enemy's minion is a great powerplay, and a play Ghoul cannot do.
It clearly states Rank 5 before the winrate. And regardless for ranks the winrate is the winrate. Go be butthurt somewhere else.
Win Rate X-5 is pretty meaningless, I got to rank 5 with an RNGesus deck.
Not saying it's an amazing accomplishment Flood. Just saying it's still the deck's winrate at rank 5. And it's clearly said that the winrate is at rank 5. If I claimed it was just 80% winrate i could see why people would ask about it/state issues with it. But it clearly states it 80% at rank 5 so why people need to make a big fuzz about it is simply dumb.
People make a big fuss because even the best players in the world have about a 20% less winrate then that. But At rank 5 that winrate is very possible
I agree. But when it's proper advertised as a rank 5 winrate theres no reason to make a big fuss of it. I have no illusions thinking that this deck would win 80 out of 100 games in legend ranks.
I honestly don't care. I have seen win rates just as good I am not trying to say you are lying
Yeah it's fine. Admire your work btw
Would ysera fit in this deck?
I find Ysera simply too be slow. It's a 9 mana card that will spend an entire turn to draw a card and setup a 4/12. This minion often struggles to trade on it's own which is a huge drawback for such a expensive card. But on the other hand you get the Dream card and every now and then Dream cards can make huge differences.
In this deckstyle I would not work on adding her first. But it could probably be done.
