Heroic Thaddius' Warlock
Hi everyone, and welcome to the final boss of the Heroic Construct Quarter: Thaddius! It is in my opinion one of the most fun battles in the add-on. With his Polarity Shift, it makes this game a little bit of a chess game.
Background
Thaddius has his Polarity Shift Hero Power which switches the attack and health of all the minions on the field. He also starts his first turn by summoning for free Feugen and Stalagg on the field, however they will not have their deathrattle, but two minions at 4/7 and 7/4 that keep switching their attack and health means that you'll get 11 damage to the face until you can deal with them. So unless you want him to "Kill!" us, here is a Warlock strategy to beat him.
Strategy
- To start off, I would like to say that this is based on a Zoo build, which means in mid-game you will usually want to Life Tap for extra draw and gain a hand advantage over Thaddius.
- To kick start the match-up you want to mulligan for a Soulfire and a Corruption as these two cards will eliminate the both Feugen and Stalagg swiftly. You will also want a 1 drop minion that you can play on your first turn.
- Edit: You can also switch Corruption for an Unstable Ghoul in the mulligan, as he takes care of Stalagg after the Polarity Shift whilst as usual, Soulfire will take care of Feugen. Thanks to Goge for bringing this up and giving us more options to deal with early game.
- Just to be clear, getting clear of both Feugen and Stalagg is the toughest part of the match-up but once done, things should go smoothly.
- After that, you want to control the board whilst buffing your Undertaker in the early and mid-game.
- You can use the Dire Wolf Alpha to take advantage of Polarity Shift and therefore continuously buff your other minions.
- Around turn 5 you will want to play either Feugen and Stalagg, especially if you have either a Shadowflame in hand or a Baron Rivendare on the field. Either minion will summon a (or two) Thadius when dead, which is an 11/11. Just try and play around polarity shift when you do so.
- Once the board is settled, you will be free to go for the face. You shouldn't have too much problems from then on.
The early game is the most difficult part of the game, but once you get rid of both Feugen and Stalagg, you should be fine. RNG doesn't play that big of a party in this match-up as you are playing a Zoo build and will be drawing a lot in mid game, making sure you can be mana efficient. Good luck guys and see you next week!
If you are having troubles with the rest of the Construct Quarter check my other F2P decks out for Patchwerk, Grobbulus or Gluth.
Here is a great game from Kizaru1 using this deck to beat Heroic Thaddius, check it out!
Edit: After considering everyone's opinion in the comment section, I decided to switch -2 Voidcallers for +2 Unstable Ghouls for couple of reasons: it helps avoid face damage in the early game, reduces the attack of the minions on board for the next turn and Voidcaller is actually pretty useless apart from buffing the Undertaker. After testing, the deck seems more reliable in the early game.
Used this deck, got two Corruption out the gate and then it was pure luck from there to win. Wasn't able to utilize Thaddius even with a Stalagg and a Baron Rivendare on the field, however thanks to good RNG, and smart trades, I was able to keep Baron as an 8/1 minion for two turns and that won it for me.
Good deck, but VERY reliant on RNG. If it isn't perfect out the gate, then just keep resetting until it is. The author is right: with the 11 damage dealers gone early, then the game is about survival until mid-game and then winning.
Double Corruption on turn one helped immensely. After that is was a matter of keeping my minions alive while clearing his.
I got it very first try, so this deck is doable. It may take a few mulligans and a set of perfect RNG to get this going well (For instance, I couldn't life tap because he'd hit me so low, but I still managed to get good draw and win without summoning Thaddius).
Keep at it. The potential is there as long as you make smart trades.
+1 for the basic deck idea
Did a few changes to make it work and then completed in the first try, ofc RNG plays a big game in this but you can do ..
Leper Gnome <> Mortal Coil
Undertaker <> Voidwalker
Zombie Chow <> Power Overwhelming
Dire Wolf Alpha <> Drain Life
Thanks to your changes, did it on first try. Good job mate.
25 concedes and not even a single time Corruption + Soulfire. Moving towards other deck. Don't like auto conceding without a fight, heroic fights are not elaborated to be fought this way.
yeah. people dont put too much efforts to think why and how...
Deck works, but here's the catch. You NEED both Corruption and [card]Soulfire/card] in opening hand to win. Otherwise, the damage will overwhelm you around turn 5~6.
This deck worked great for me. I mulliganed about 3 times to get corruption and soulfire to start with. Got Baron out on turn 4, Stalagg out on turn 5, and drew shadowflame on turn 6 to kill Stalagg and get 2 Thaddius'. Destroyed him from there. It took a few life taps to get cards out of the way for those draws but I was able to trade and weather the storm enough to kill him with 10 hp left.
Awesome deck, worked well. Thanks man!
32 attempts with this deck, there is no way to gain board control after turn 4, even when getting perfect mulligan. Blizz has changed all heroic bosses to counter easy decks...
whenever i get the right mulligan, he destroys all my minions by round 5, i've never gotten him below 40hp...
Mulliganed twice to get corruption and soulfire in my starting hand and beat him, first attempt. Even got a little unlucky and he cleared my board twice with lightning storms.. Deck works great.
First attemp success, thanks
You need to be really lucky to even have a good chance of winning
With a VERY lucky opening hand consisting of both Corruption AND Soulfire it was an easy match. Also helped a lot making the following changes that another user suggested: -1 Void Terror, -2 Dire Wolf Alpha, -2 Dancing Swords | +1 Big Game Hunter, +2 Sunfury Protector, +2 Molten Giant.
The best changes... Molten its a MVP. The mulligan works fine also with a 1 drop, corruption/Soulfire and Ghoul
trash
The deck was ok but I mad a few changes. By getting rid of the void caller for a bgh. Took out the two dancing swords for two molten giants. Also I removed the dire wolf for a sunfury protector to taught the large creatures.
i wish there was an update with gvg and blackrock cards...
The deck works, but it takes a few tries and the perfect hand. It took about ten tries but on the final try I had a Corruption, Soulfire and a 1-cost minion. That is when I won the game.
