GREETINGS!
My name is Novalicious and today i am showcasing my variation of Control Priest. Priest is considered to be one of the weakest classes in Hearthstone but i am here to tell you that i don't fully agree with that. Sure they have problems with 4 attack creatures when it comes to removing them but it's really not that bad. I have been trying a lot of priest decks for a long time now and this is what made the cut for me (and hopefully for you).
Card Choices
2x Circle of Healing: Use in conjuction with Injured Blademaster / Auchenai Soulpriest. Some combos are: Injured Blademaster + Circle of Healing ( This can be devastating for your opponent if you can do it on turn 2/3 ). Another one is Auchenai Soulpriest + Circle of Healing for a 2 mana Flamestrike.
2x Northshire Cleric: Your draw engine. You need to be really careful when you consider playing this one. Personally i never throw it on the board on it's own on turn 1 without following it with a Power Word: Shield. When you play this card you need to utilize it on the same turn as well. This is important or you will run out of cards and fall behind.
2x Power Word: Shield: Another card draw. It really shines against aggro with Wild Pyromancer and if you can combine it with Northshire Cleric + Circle of Healing too, even better.
2x Crazed Alchemist: This card makes things a lot easier. There are a handful of combos you can perform with this one. You flat out kill Mana Tide Totem, Flametongue Totem, Shield Bearer, Doomsayer. Combined with Shadow Word: Death you can take care of Druid of the Claw, Chillwind Yeti etc. You can take it one step further and include Power Word: Shield as well to take care of 3 mana cost minions against Miracle Rogue since your Shadow Word: Death is not going to be of much use in this match-up. Sometimes you can use it with Cabal Shadow Priest but that doesn't happen very often. Also usable on Ysera for a 12/4 unexpected strike.
2x Wild Pyromancer: Great card against aggro. Combine it with Power Word: Shield or spells in general. Pretty self-explanatory.
1x Big Game Hunter: A handful of people are running Ragnaros but even if they don't you can still combine this with Power: Word Shield or Crazed Alchemist. Superb against Handlocks. I almost always find value for this card.
1x Earthen Ring Farseer: Heal yourself or a minion. You can use it as a 3 damage nuke if you have Auchenai Soulpriest out.
2x Injured Blademaster: Good with Circle of Healing or just hero power. Other than that a solid minion.
2x: Shadow Word: Death: Takes care of creatures with 5+ Attack. Look at Crazed Alchemist for combos.
2x Thoughtsteal: This one is similar to Arcane Intellect but instead you draw from your opponent's deck. Except for the fact that it instantly gives you 2 cards, it also gives you an insight as to what your opponent is playing and what to expect. Mostly shines against Control Decks.
2x Auchenai Soulpriest: I would only play this one on it's own out of desperation. You want to utilize this card when you play it. Combine it with Circle of Healing if you can.
1x Faceless Manipulator: Since you have a handful of legendaries in this deck, you can make use of this easily. You can also use it to copy an opponent's minion and then remove it.
1x Cabal Shadow Priest: Stealing a harvest golem always feels so nice. Not much to say about this card. I absolutely love it but i find 2 of them a bit slow.
1x Cairne Bloodhoof: A very durable minion and a good candidate for Faceless.
2x Holy Fire: Takes care of 5hp minions like Chillwind Yeti / Fire Elemental and heals you in the process.
1x The Black Knight: With so many taunts around in the ladder, you will almost always find value for this card. So many people are running taunts nowadays to counter Miracle/Zoo.
1x Baron Geddon: Superb card against shamans and since this deck isn't running Holy Nova, you will find a use for it. You don't really wanna play this one if you are not going to kill anything. Also baiting hard removal on this guy is good for your Ragnaros the Firelord / Ysera.
1x Ragnaros the Firelord: One of your big threats. Use it wisely.
1x Ysera: Once again, a big threat. If not removed fast it just carries you to victory. You can sometimes combine it with Crazed Alchemist for a 12 dmg swing.
1x Mind Control: This card is pure awesomeness vs control and heavy legendary decks like Control Warrior. Also really good against Handlock. Basically you want to use this card to take one of the most powerful minions of your opponent and change the tide to your favor. Not many people expect you to run Mind Control nowadays.
Cards that didn't make it
Holy Nova: I find this card to be way too slow for what it does. Against aggro it hardly does anything, let alone against Control. You're better off without it.
Prophet Velen: It's a decent card but if you run it you also need to run Mind Blast and Holy Smite. I have tried it many times but i found that i am better off without any of them. You already have a handful of ways to finish your opponent.
Mulligan
As a general rule of thumb aim for Circle of Healing / Auchenai Soulpriest. If i have 1 of those in my starting hand, i start looking for the 2nd piece of the combo.
Against aggro getting Wild Pyromancer / Power Word: Shield / Northshire Cleric / Doomsayer is really good. Look for Auchenai Soulpriest / Circle of Healing as well.
Conclusion
This deck is not easy to play and requires you having access to a handful of legendaries. On top of that it's a really fun deck with many powerful combos. It's not super great against aggro but it does its job. You hardly ever lose against any control deck.
Thanks a lot guys for taking the time to read this and if requested i can go more in depth about what to do against each match-up. Feel free to ask any questions here or in game ( Novalicious#2906 ).
Take care!
UPDATES!
Replaced 2x Injured Blademaster for 2x Doomsayer for more options early game and delaying to mid-late game.
This deck is much fun to play.
I don't have Cairne so I used Sylvannas instead.
Please update!
giving this a try i really wanna do well with priest i really do...
This deck is not competitive in the current meta. It needs an update badly. It has far too many "big" cards and not enough mass effect cards. The most popular decks right now are Zoo it seems, and this deck simply cannot compete with current Zoo decks atm.
It also seems like it is trying to be too many things at once. It needs to try to find a strategy and focus to do it well (not try to be all things to all possible decks). When a deck tries to cover all bases (instead of doing one or two things very well), it becomes weaker. And in the current meta, that weakness (of this deck) is exposed.
I have a really hard time with this deck in the current meta.
With no smite this deck struggles to activate pyromancer.
the mana curve is way too heavy on the back end, Most games I end up passing my first 2-3 turns because i have no drops.
The BGH/Alch/SWD gimmick is just a complicated way to overcome a problem that other classes don't have with minion removal.
Very similar to a personal deck I've made, and super cool!!! But Honestly....licious...is this actually legendary? Proof please? Not to be mean...just asking
I think Cleric and pyromancer can actually be situational, switch to spell/creatures some solid board minions probly will be better, think about twilight drake and mountain giants, or Holy smite instead of Cleric, most of the time I'm with 6+ cards in my hands don't really need Cleric for draw. Softify wanna test them out?
Many people say Shadow of pain is bad, but there are creatures like sen'jin, auchenai, water elemental or even zoo player put down a scarlet cursader and then you can just rip off the shield
I tried this deck and made a few adjustments. When I first started playing it, I was looking to a lot of decks that had low health minions and the Wild Pyro's weren't killing them fast enough because the deck doesn't have too many spells.
I took out both Wild Pyromancer and added 2 Holy Nova.
I took out Baron Geddon and added Sylvanas Windrunner.
After making those changes I went from rank 20 to rank 14!
I lost 3 games, to a hunter, paladin and a rogue due to bad RNG, but this deck is not only cool, it is CRAZY FUN! A few times we actually ended with no more cards and the clock ticking on the fatigue counter. Super fun!
I use Sylvanas Windrunner instead of Cairne Bloodhoof (don't have Cairne atm, but want to craft soon), so in the future I would like to put both of them in the deck, was thinking about wich one I should replace for...any suggestions?
[card]Crazed Alchemist [/card] I just fall in love with this card with all the Priest combo, and this card just auto rip off mana/fire totoms ;)
My advice, don't ever use Cairne Bloodhoof as a Priest.
Faceless Manipulator > gg. With all due respect to the deck maker of course, it's just my opinion.
How do you deal with force of nature + savage roar combo or miracle rogue with no taunt?
I would personally trade the BGH for a Sunfury Protector. You already have 2 shadow word death and 1 mind control (and to some extent the Black Knight), who kind of serve the same purpose. Sunfury can be a decent 2 drop, and you really need your 2 drops at turn 2, particularly as a Priest when the hero ability is sometime useless. Your options are limited and situational, I think one more two drop could help. Sunfury would be also really great in the late game with Rag or Ysera. Even with Cairne to force him to trade with him before it get silenced. The only downside is the Black Knight, but in other case having taunts can be a game saving move.
Oh, just saw your updates, it starts to make a lot of 2 drops finally, maybe you could make the trade back? I have a hard time understanding the utility of Doom..? It seems like a dead card if you don't get him at turn 2, late game it usually easy to deal with?
What do you think?
I am having huge issues with any aggro deck. Any suggestions?
has nothing against hunters with this deck
any subs for all the legends?
Really nice. Nice to see a fresh take on the Priest class. The Amaz decks have gotten quite old
I hate it that I don't see any Velen builds.. What do you think makes him so.. Underpowered (?) ?
I love the PW Alchemist BGH combo
Hi Novalicious,
your Deck is very nice. However there is one thing, that seems to cause a lot of trouble. The Mulligan makes or breaks the game. Unless you somehow get ASP+CoH on the initial 4 turns, you'll most likely die to any form of aggressive plays. Do you have any card replacement recommendations? Here are some examples for things I would like to include in my variant of your deck:
Short explanation:
This deck performs very well for me against popular control oriented styles. Since aggressive and "easy" playstyles are much more common in the lower ranks my winrate is significantly lower than it should be. It feels as if this deck just needs more consistent board damage and presence. The idea of surviving until you can cripple the opponent into a reactive position and ultimately defeat just does not work out in those circumstances. All of the aforementioned problems happen because of a general lack of early presence and/or enforcing mechanics. So what do you think?
Regards
Qusteka
This deck is auto loss against zoo.
Can you please post a gameplay of this deck at higher ranks?
As everyone already knows, Priest's cards are too situational to be good, so I wonder how a regular game goes, specially without cards like Holy Nova and Holy Smite. :)
