Hey there, my name is KSlayer. I've hit legend a few times, and generally try to share decks that appear to be doing well in the meta. Today, I want to share this Dragon Priest deck, which honestly, appears to be REALLY solid in this meta. This is weird to say...but I think this deck just may beat...everything. No opposing hero makes me roll my eyes and think "let's get it over with quickly so I can get to a better matchup".
The first thing you may notice is the lack of Northshire Cleric. I am sure I'll be criticized for this exception, but I TRULY believe that as good as Cleric is...it simply has no place in dragon decks (at least not in this meta). I keep a spreadsheet with statistics about my games, including a "dead cards" column...and this by FAR my deadest card when I used to play it. If you're vs aggro, you want to be healing face...and if you're vs control or tempo, the tempo loss of healing to gain a card can get you behind quickly. Note: card draw is no issue with this deck.
So we've freed up a little room. What do we do with all this space? I'll tell you what we do...we tech against some of our bad matchups (warriors, freeze mages, and handlocks). I generally don't like heavy teching, but I believe dragon priest gives you enough time and just enough cycle to put techs to REALLY good use. So what are our techs in this deck?
1) Harrison Jones - This is just a sweet card. It pisses all over control warriors, hunters, and paladins....matchups we see a LOT of. Also, every now and then, it will win you a Handlock match.
2) Kezan Mystic - Against mages and hunters, this can single-handedly win the game. It's not game breaking against secret pallies, but it sure doesn't hurt anything.
3) Vol'jin - Some people consider this an auto-include...but it's undoubtedly a tech card. This is your Ysera answer against warrior and priest and also another form of removal against Handlock. We run double Holy Smite in this deck, which coupled with Vol'jin, make Smite ALWAYS an amazing card, regardless of matchup.
So how do we win? We build an early board by trying to play unfair early cards with dragon synergy. Twilight Whelp, Wyrmrest Agent, and Blackwing Technician are the big 3...and sometimes I keep Twilight Guardian (especially with coin) since it's such a good play on curve and also enables your early stuff. I also keep Harrison Jones vs warrior. Kezan Mystic vs mage and hunter. Shadow Word: Pain against druid or paladin. Holy Smite against hunter. Velen's Chosen against priest (to make a 4 attack Whelp or Agent).
I may break down matchups if anybody needs it, but I suspect you all know how to play this :)
Happy hunting.
I felt the lack of clerics underwhelming. You just need the body in early game to trade and even more importantly, you need it to use your buffs. I often found myself with velens/pw:s in hand but no early minions drawn.
any replace for chilmaw? maybe nefarian?
Before I had the dust to craft chillmaw, I was using abomination. It's absolutely amazing against aggro decks.... He was so good for me that I honestly debated for a long time to even craft chillmaw.... But in the end just one more dragon to help with synergy helped immensely.
Chillmaw is probably one of the most interesting cards in HS, it has a whole bluff aspect to it (do I have a dragon or I don't? Feeling lucky, punk?). And yeah, being a dragon with Taunt helps immensly.
A suggestion : one Mass Dispel would make the deck even better...Especially with the surprise factor. Imagine vs a paladin with all the buffs on his minions...Plus you draw one card. It won me many games for instances, sometimes = auto-concedes.
Very nice deck :)
Also could you explain this please ? About harrison Jones :
"Also, every now and then, it will win you a Handlock match."
Jaraxxus.
Oh I see, I forgot about it XD...Ty
Took out a Holy Nova and Blackwing Technician for another Lightbomb and a Shrinkmeister. I think teching in a Shrinkmeister is really good, because it's much better to get a 3/2 on board with a favorable trade than achieving the same results by trading and healing with hero power. It also works well with Cabal Shadow Priest, especially in prolonged matches when you know that your opponent has Ysera.
Hi,
thanks for the refreshing touch on DragonPriest. I like it a lot!
What do you think about including Eydis Darkbane for say a Blackwing Technician?
I actually used to run exactly that. When it works, it's freaking sweet. The problem, I found is that if you don't have a PW:S to drop on her at 3 (with coin) or 4 mana, she's a real liability on curve (and curve is the name of the game). The 4 health dies to, namely, Truesilver, Death's Bite, and Shredder whereas Technician survives all of those. I can't stress just how important this is. That being said, Eydis is really fun and very strong when it works. It gives the deck a higher ceiling but adds a little inconsistency. If you're seeing ONLY aggro....I say use her.
i like the idea of no cleric I may try it..but i definitely would like to add sylvana and/or Boom so ill drop either the chromagus or chillmaw maybe both and run with the minimun 7 dragons XD
i was watching Thijs and also like the idea of chow in the deck to control early game.
Sylv is good. Boom is never bad, but would be a BGH target. I think Chrome is a reasonable drop (although, if you haven't played him...PLEASE try him...he's very good). I would definitely not cut Chillmaw in this meta.
I think you're right about Cleric. I feel like a lot of people, including myself, just kind of think "Oh, it's priest, of course I need Northshire Cleric!" without really thinking about how much value they really get out of it in Dragon Priest and how they could make their deck more consistent without them. I like your innovation and I'll definitely try this list :)
Edit: Forgot to mention that I'll be trying it with 1x Holy Nova and 2x Lightbomb, as in a lot of cases holy nova just doesn't do enough and it loses some value without Clerics. Also, lightbombs are extremely good against secret paladin and running 2 is worth it to draw it consistently when you need it in that matchup.
You know, I think that you make a good point with dropping a nova due to slight value loss from Cleric. Every priest player knows how clunky it feels having 2 novas filling up your hand against, say, a warrior. Test lightbomb and let me know how that works. Historically, in Dragon Priest, I feel like lightbombs are often dead since you ravage your own board more than the opponents in some cases...but this is a funny meta full of board swarming, so maybe it's the right move now.
I think 2x Lightbomb is definitely better after playing around with it. The damage it does to your own board is minimal, especially with PW:S and Velen's. Also, how do you think this compares to the Dragon Priest deck on rank 1 legend EU?

Why not cleric?
Card advantage is meaningless in this meta. Hell, with Divine Favor, it can actually be a liability. The tempo loss from, say, healing on turn 2 or 3 to draw a card (as opposed to playing a minion) puts you behind on board for the rest of the game. This deck has reasonable card draw (enough to never run out of steam) with Azures, Harrison, Shields, and Chrome.
Well, Sylvanas is never bad in priest, so it's not like you're completely boned or anything. That being said, the swing that Harrison gives you against warrior seems to be pretty key to overwhelming them. Maybe drop the SW:P and slot in an ooze? I'd miss Pain against paladin, but Ooze is such a good card (even better than Harrison in many instances...like against Hunter). Let me know what works!
And with all those secret paladin that run 2 truesilver, 2 muster for battle and 1 tirion, you will get a lot of value from your Harrison Jones the majority of your games.
