Spent the season of June reaching Legend and optimizing a Dragon Mage control deck. This deck has gotten me through rank 5-1 with relative ease and has kept me easily in the top 500 of the Legend rankings. It's an incredibly solid control deck that dominates other control decks such as Paladin and Warrior. It furthermore does an incredible job at outliving the combo decks from Oil Rogue and Patron Warrior. It fairs quite well against Tempo Mage, Zoo Warlock and does surprisingly well against any slower type of Hunter.
The deck features many heavy, big threats such as Ysera, Nefarian and Dr. Boom. The main feature however, is the plethora of sustain abilities due to the use of two Antique Healbots, Alexstrasza and an Ice Block. It does not use Fireballs, Polymorph functions as a better 4-cost removal spell in control matchups and there is no burst in this deck. Lastly, it uses two Flamestrikes due to their importance in matchups such as Zoo Warlock and Patron Warrior.

(All accessible with a 'navigation bar' at the bottom of the video)
In general the deck performs best against common decks in this order:
1. Priest/Control Paladin > 2. Control Warrior > 3. Patron Warrior > 4. Oil Rogue > 5. Tempo Mage/Mech Shaman > 6. Freeze Mage/Druid > 7. Warlock Zoo > 8. Hybrid Hunter > 9. Aggro Hunter > 10. Handlock > 11. Malygos Warlock > 12. Aggro Paladin
Two more matches (Zoo Warlock and Patron Warrior):

Potential changes:
- Change 1x Sludge Belcher for Harrison Jones for an even better matchup against warriors (and other weapon users, of course).
General mulligan strategy:
Generally you're looking for Mad Scientists and Blackwing Technicians. Against aggro decks you want to mulligan for Zombie Chow. Against slower, more control decks you're looking for Scientist, Technician and Twilight Drakes. When you're up against a deck you know is likely to play threats early (e.g. tempo mage, zoo lock) you'll also want to mulligan for Frostbolt.
Great deck, have you tried updating it with new cards? I understand that the good patron match-up was a key thing to this deck being good, but I love the style of play and it would be great to see it viable again!
Anyone still interested in this deck should take note that Twilight Guardian is strictly better than Twilight Drake and should be swapped. Also, I'm using my Chillmaw over Dr. Boom. Still good, still winning.
What conditions should I play nefarian in? I'm having trouble with him.
I replaced the Zombie Chow and BGH (Since there's already 2 Polymorphs) for 2x Loot Hoarder for more card draw.
If you don't have Alexstraza, do you think it makes more sense to run double ice barriers in place of 1 x ice block and 1 x ice barrier?
To be fair this is brilliant. I'm using a Dragon Warrior which runs one Corruptor so I applied that here and just added Arcane Intellect and took a Corruptor. For those who wanted card draw ;D
What about Rend Blackhand ?
I can't manage to win with this deck. I don't know how you guys survive the early game. I find myself begging for flamestrike too often and even that is not enough to hold on cause i m so close to death.
Idk Rend always works for me as a great remover and is another threat on the board. But it's all opinion personally i like the card and think it's incredibly underrated.
Hmm I just lost to 6 face hunters in a row.... much fun
fancy deck. loving it. :D truly throws people off-guard. :)
thanks for the deck list. i plan to reach the golden portrait for jaina using this. 50 more wins and we're golden.
It's a fun deck when it works but it's just way too inconsistent it seems. Even if you can survive into the late game, you will often end up dying because the deck stalls out and you're waiting to pull your last Flamestrike so you can clear the board and stabilize. I can't count the number of times I've been at 10 mana and been unable to play Ysera, Alexstrasza orNefarian because his board was so much stronger than mine -- instead you're forced to play survive a few more turns by playing Antique Healbot or Sludge Belcher. I dunno - I just think it's too slow even if going against Midrange or Control.
Needs a better Mulligan strategy. because i mulligan hard for the things he said and i often end up taking heavy face damage..
Tried this deck 6 matches all 6 lost -.-
And this kids, is the one known as "No Skill"
Just wanted to say I had the most awesome game versus a Handlock with your deck. I'm using everything in the list minus the Alexstrasza and Ysera I do not have (I know they are amazing with this kind of deck but I do not have them yet), I replaced them with Chromagus and Ragnaros. It was worth crafting one Ice Block I didn't have just to try this deck out. I got the Handlock to duplicate my BGH, which net me three easy giants kills. Dat feel :). Used two Flamestrikes to finish one giant, two Sludge Belchers, and two Twilight Drakes.
Near the end Nefarian gave me a Bane of Doom and a Sacrificial Pact, I got to use the Bane on his Argus, and got a Blood Imp from it. Finally when he used Jaraxxus knowing he had already lost, I got to use the proverbial Sacrificial Pact on Jaraxxus. Got back to 30 health with it. A perfect finish, just so much fun.
Thanks for the deck.
Good grinder deck! Long interesting battles.
Ysera is "late game num1 card". No replacement. If you NEED choose a card to place instead of Ysera - candidate num1 is Rag. Or you try Deathwing for "fatigue bingo". But BGH, loves him but not less than Dr.Balanced.
Thank you so much mate for this deck. First 10 games from rank 11: 8-2! Cheers! ;)
I have gone from rank 12-13 to 9 so far over the last few days with this deck.I made some changes as suggested by another user and some of my own. Thanks for your ideas. What rank are any others getting with this deck?
This deck is so cool, thanks man :)
