Hi guys! After 5 years of Hearthstone, Control Hunter is finally here!!!
I just want to say that I love playing meme control hunters, and for the past 2 years after every expansion I experimented with different builds to make Control Hunter viable. I've tried everything, from the basic beast package with Kathrena Winterwisp to OTK combos with Emeriss . I even tried board clear combos with Toxic Arrow. The craziest I did was Wild Pyromancer + Deathspeaker + Toxic Arrow + any other spell to clear the scariest boards of Taunt Druid. But every time the best winrate that I had with the deck was around 50% and after some time I had to return to a different deck to climb to legend.
But finally, after all the balance changes, in this exact meta I present you the Control hunter list with which I managed to get 65% winrate and climb to legend!
If this post manages to get 30 upvotes I will write a basic strategy guide, mulligan and card choices/replacements!
Guys, thank you for all of the support!!! Feel free to post all of your ideas in the comments, I'll try to discuss them with all of you!
General strategy
You'll have to adjust your strategy a lot depending on what deck you are facing. Don't underestimate the tempo part of the deck. This is a Hunter deck so you always have to keep in mind that you have the opportunity for going face and finishing up the game with Steady Shot. Also the deck runs the Lesser Emerald Spellstone + secrets package, 2x Animal Companion, weapons and a lot of efficient removal, so it can actually finish up games fast enough with a better starting hand.
The main weakness of the deck is the Combo archetype. Versus combo decks you have to try to be as aggressive as possible and win the game early because you are never going to survive the damage of Combo Priest for example.
Versus Control decks you'll have to try to outvalue your opponent by using your 3 main value generating cards: Deathstalker Rexxar, Zul'jin and Elise the Trailblazer. Keep card draw cards against slower decks, but never keep or play them against decks that you think will end up going to fatigue like Odd Warrior. Also don't rush your secrets if you don't absolutely need them, try to keep them for Lesser Emerald Spellstone.
Versus Aggro decks you are always trying to survive. Use your secrets and removals to stop their early game aggression and try to stabilize with your healing/armour cards. Never keep Zilliax because of the 1 copy of Corpsetaker
General mulligan
Always keep: Lesser Emerald Spellstone, Animal Companion and Candleshot. With Lesser Emerald Spellstone keep Explosive Trap, Wandering Monster and Secret Plan. With Candleshot keep Bloodscalp Strategist, the card is actually amazing against everything.
VS Aggro:
Keep: Explosive Trap, Wandering Monster and Secret Plan regardless of spellstone, Flanking Strike and Corpsetaker.
VS Control:
Keep: Deathstalker Rexxar, Elise the Trailblazer, Zul'jin and possibly Stitched Tracker if you have a good enough hand. If you are NOT facing fatigue decks you shall keep Loot Hoarder and Witchwood Piper.
Card replacements
First of all I want to say that the version you are currently seeing is made to have the best chances for wining vs the whole meta. I tried to tech in cards to help me beat both Aggro and Control.
VS Aggro:
Replace Crushing Walls with another secret and you can remove some of the card draw or Stitched Tracker for more taunt minions.
VS Control:
Replace Corpsetaker with Houndmaster Shaw.
VS Combo:
Try to fit in Mojomaster Zihi or Nerubian Unraveler depending on the deck you want to beat.
BUDGET replacements:
Deathstalker Rexxar and Zul'jin are irreplaceable unfortunately.
Elise the Trailblazer is also very important for the Control matchups but you can try to replace her with another value generating card like Marin the Fox, Arcane Dynamo or even Cybertech Chip. You can also replace her by adding another solid 5 drop.
The Lich King can easily be replaced by Stonehill Defender.
Zilliax can be replaced by Rotten Applebaum or Stonehill Defender, but if you are cutting him you should ALSO cut Corpsetaker 100%.
Corpsetaker can be replaced by Shroom Brewer or Saronite Chain Gang.
Crushing Walls can be replaced by another secret or Arcane Dynamo.
Here's a great video made by a fellow HS enthusiast kiwiinbacon showcasing the power of the deck. He reviewed my [TOP 5 LEGEND] Egg Hunter before and If you want to see more great HS content you should go and check his youtube account:

So back again. I haven't played much since my last post just due to time. However After coming back and making this deck over again I still love it though I did make a few changes. I was constantly struggling against aggro decks if I got even a minor bad draw, I took out a few things that were mid and later game control and added in a few more in that focused on aggro deck, more so Hunters and Odd Paladins. These changes left more then enough control to deal with late game decks.
First I took out Loot Hoarder in Favor of Secretkeeper . I find this can give the deck a really good Advantage in the early game Vs aggro decks, more so if you have a choice trap or 2. Also decks will bend over backwards to kill this card the second they see it often wasting a clear card or minions to be rid of it. Really nice when you don't have a trap.
Secondly with the Loot Hoarder gone I took out Witchwood Piper in favor of a second Explosive Trap. This can work well still against control decks and just totally wrecks Aggro decks often making them give up.
Finally I removed Elise the Trailblazer AND Corpsetaker for 2 Stonehill Defender . This give the deck a much needed defense boost early. The Corpsetaker really relies on not drawing Zilliax and isn't until turn 4 which Stonehill Defender is turn 3 and Vs Odd Paladin can soak up a few minions most of the time AND can provide you with needed taunts for next turn or later down the line. The also come in handy late game possibly stopping a big minion while giving you a late game Taunt like The Lich King ( The Quest Control Warrior I faced was not happy about getting 3 dropped on him.
This still left me more then enough control to battle out Healidin, Wall Priest, Mid range Hunter, Dragon Priest and Elemental Shaman. The biggest strength of this deck comes from people don;t know what to expect. You still don't see anything like this in the game. Everyone assumes Aggro hunter or Mid range. So they mulligan for that and find themselves at a huge disadvantage right from the word go. The Control Warrior I faced pretty much played himself. He was apparently Quest control but mulligan his quest away when he saw a Hunter and didn't get it back till like we were both 10 cards left to draw. On top of that I got a bit lucky with Deathstalker Rexxar . From turn 6 on I was able to constantly tailor create beasts as I needed them From Poison rush to stealth, can't be targeted to Silence taunt. We both ended up in Fatigue but I had put enough pressure on him with building beasts that I had him at 14 health and 5 armor while I was 30 health and 5 armor. I just kept wearing him down and he finally realized he wasn't going to outlast me.
I'd really love to see a form of this deck live into the next Expansion BUT.. really without Deathstalker Rexxar I don't see how it'll do it well Vs other control decks. That card really gives you the value you need to hold the board and win the game.
Just uploaded a rogue deck that's able to produce a board with 6 The Lich King's on turn 7 lol. It has a winrate at rank 7-3 of 93%.. totally broken and insanely fun. Rogue Tier 1?

Can confirm, this deck is very well crafted. The only downside is that your opponent often won't surrender. You basically autowin vs Odd Warrior and Odd Mage, but the games take forever. The listed version also has a lot of 1 copies for no reason at all. I do disagree with the creator. There's very limited room for card swaps.
I made the following swaps:
- Corpsetaker with Houndmaster Shaw because you basically autolose if you draw Zilliax before you play it.
- Witchwood Piper with a 2nd Stitched Tracker , because I like to avoid milling myself. Stitched Tracker can also reliably fetch some of the key cards due to the deck structure - compared to simply drawing a Loot Hoarder .
- Elise the Trailblazer with The Black Knight because Priests and Warriors deserve to suffer. Also fucks Righteous Protector and Tar Creeper. Elise the Trailblazer does seem to be a fine choice if you want more value though. This spot is definitely the tech spot imo.
I also tried out:
Stonehill Defender, but found that The Lich King is actually the deck's weakest card and I don't really want more copies of him. And you won't get him consistently.
Harrison Jones (in addition to the Gluttonous Ooze) to reliably counter weapon decks. Worked very well with double Stitched Tracker, but somewhat annoying when I wasn't facing weapons.
Hey, I wanted to come here to say I LOVE the deck. I'm currently 5 wins 1 loss with it and that loss comes by Odd Paladin. Truth is that loss came from me just getting a bad draw and not getting needed traps early. I've taken down odd Mage, Evolve Shaman and Mid range hunter, though my Fav was defeating Wall priest.. good LORD I hate wall priest. I'd rather face 10 Odd paladin in a row then 1 Wall priest. However paying smart and digging for the right traps, Dead shot and forcing him to respond to me and not letting him get to many big minions down he fell to the side having not even touched me. Yes the deck could use some tweaking. I feel that Loot hoarder doesn't help all that much nor does the piper. You can also do without the Corpse taker though what you would replace them with is beyond me.
Edit : Like I'm wondering about Removing the Corpse taker and Witchwood Piper with Stonehill defenders and the Loot hoarders with Secret Keepers. The draw does help, but I feel this helps a little more with early threats and can hold off aggro better with a taunt into a taunt. I could be WAY off though.
I see a few suggestions above but I'm not sure the cuts are proper. Digging with the tracker to get a copy of your LK has won more then 1 control battle for me. It can handle aggro decks if it pulls the right traps early, however it Suppose it could use more early healing or defense. Maybe tar creeper and or Stonehill?
Either way I hope a version of this deck survives the up coming season. I enjoy control WAY more then aggro or mid-range and hunter is the single class that seems to suffer being able to do that. Keep it up man!!
Ok so after playing this deck I find its super inconsistent. Too often I’m sitting on secrets waiting for emerald spell stone, stuck without zul Jin, waiting on just one card to close things out but I don’t get it. Which is a shame because it’s a really fun deck to play and a nice break from all the beast hunter decks.
It definitely lacks some good one drops. Turn one I’m often sitting with my thumb up my butt, and then forced to waste a secret on turn two hoping to maybe get some traction by turn three or four. Against aggro decks it really doesn’t stand a chance unless everything plays out perfectly.
It's fun to play but never 65% WR , sure below 50% WR ...
You could call it Survival Hunter.
After the death of Spell Hunter, I was looking for a new ladder deck. And now, glory upon you, OP. My body is ready.
I just started this deck so I can’t say how effective it is, but I can say it’s a ton of fun. I died laughing because I used Marin the Fox to get Tolins Goblet, then next turn got a full hand of Zul’jin.
Edit: just did it again lmao
I just totally jostled an elemental control mage with this and it was the greatest feeling since sliced bread.
If you guys are into controlhunters you might wanna try this one:

It's a Questhunter with badass spotremovals thx to Toxinator and Hallazi. Went legend with this last season and I think it is super Fun.
Sou might want to replace snake and rat trap with secret Plan, feel free bout that. Depending on how much aggro is around, Zilliax might be good replacement for Mojo.
I have tried a lot of control hunters.
most of them in wild, using taunts and deathrattles and n'zoth as a finisher.
none of them have worked. so I will definitly try this one out.
This is utter garbage.. wouldnt waste any dust on it. It may have been good before the 110% aggro hunter meta that is going on right now. You will be dead before turn 6.. waiting for this deck to do anything.
Just started the new season: Lvl 10-9...four games...four wins. [sarcasm]"Yeah, seems like utter garbage to me"[/sarcasm]
Spellstone package wrecks Midrange Hunter
Man , you are a real legend!
I have played the deck for 1h. and i have 7-0
I hope there is more deck builders with originality and creativity like you
i cutted elise for marin and added the viciouse scalehide, dire frenzy and countess ashmore for life gain and trades
What else did you cut besides Elise
I'm currently experimenting with the same idea. I cut 1xDeadly Shot, 1xCorpsetaker, 1xStitched Tracker,1xThe Lich King and added 1xVicious Scalehide, 2xDire Frenzy, 1xCountess Ashmore. Currently I don't have better results with this version but I face mainly bad matchups for now. I think that the scalehide version actually has a lot of potential because you are never going to fatigue with 2xDire Frenzy and Zul'jin and vs aggro you actually have a way to heal yourself. The only real problem are the combo decks. Your chances to beat Combo Priest are close to 0%
Cut Corpsetaker and Witchwood Piper
