April 2016 Card Nerf
It was announced on April 20th, 2016 that Molten Giant would receive a nerf.
- Mana cost increased to 25, up from 20.
Quote from BlizzardMolten Giant is an interesting card, but it’s too easy for players to reduce its mana cost to 0. We’re increasing Molten Giant’s mana cost to 25 to increase the risks players must take to get a free Giant. The changes to Force of Nature and Arcane Golem will make dropping to low health somewhat less risky as well, which helped spur this change.

One could say they're spicy hot!
Vanilla test:
8 + 8 = 16 /2 = 8 < 20
By itself, this card is UP by the vanilla test, however if your hero has 10 or less damage, this gains great value and passes the test:
At 10 or less HP
8 + 8 = 16 /2 = 8 > 0
Insane value, essentially an 8 drop that costs 0
The card stops being negative value and becomes positive when you have taken 12 or more damage:
8 + 8 = 16 /2 = 8 = 8
whereas if you have only taken 11 damage:
8 + 8 = 16 /2 = 8 < 9
I don't play (well) enough to make him viable for a long term game. Plus I haven't gotten my hands on a Lord Jaraxxus yet.
THIS THING IS UNFAIR. BECAUSE HE IS FULL OF LAVA!!
Due to the GvG this card may need a nerf on it's mana cost imo. free giants, a shadowflame, taunt, and recovery in the same turn may be a bit to good. Sure you are supposed to play around it but it's a little difficult when you have to periodically deal with so many high healthed minions. With Molten Giants, if you assume them to be an 8-mana-value card (which is probably about right), a player could play 26 mana worth the stuff on turn 10, which is a ridiculous board swing.
The best way blizzard could nerf it is increase it's cost by just a bit :/
I do love playing handlock though, it's very fun.
This is the one reason you don't play too aggressive against Warlock. Too much face and you get 2 taunted Molten Giants staring you down.
"missed 4 damage noob" Nope, playing around Molten Giant. This card is what makes playing against Handlock so tricky.
Good ol' molten, always fun to drop 2 of those plus a sunfury/argus as handlock, most of the time the opponent will have a hard time removing even one of them, of course, judging by my luck, most of the time they'll have something like BGH+Polymorph in hand waiting already haha
cool card
Medivh combo still hard to pull off for me.
I love playing Lord Jaraxxus before Molten Giant
I love this card, one of the first epics I got (before I had any legendary) so I got to experience advanced gameplay with it. Usually used with a rogue where I deliberity would take damage and not play a taunt when I had this in my hand; my best play though was with a shaman where I buffed it 10 attack + windfury for 20 damage, truly epic!
Can be valuable later on :)
yup. basically you can only cast molten giant when you have taken at least 20 damage, in which case it's cost is 10. so 20 - (30-20) = 10.
actually you have to take at least 10 damage (not 20) to play him. when you have taken at least 20 damage, then you can play him for free
One exception is if you make your opponent Face Jaraxxus. Then your max HP is set to 15 which makes Molten Giant almost unplayable, as you need to be down to 5 health before you can even play it for 10 mana. As someone else pointed out, play this BEFORE Jaraxxus to avoid dead cards.
Mana cost changes based on your current HP, not on how much total damage you've taken. The cost will go up if you heal your hero.
So, mana cost = 20 - (Total HP - Current HP)
This is correct. It's also worth noting that armor is not considered.
