Here's the problem. Your opponent gets to control this. They cause you discard cards. So they'll complete your quest AND discard nether portal.
it sounds bad but I think what you say is very unlikely. It seems easy to play around because no class seems to be able to deal damage this minion 4-6 times on a turn. Especially before turn 5. So, even if your opponent tries to hit it 1 1, it will be still alive and you can easily trade it with an enemy minion on your turn.
The worst thing is if you don't draw this before turn8 and your quest is up to 4 or something, this card is almost unplayable (it sometimes depends on what class is your opponent) because it can discard nether portal. Other than that I don't see a big problem about this card.
Volcano
Howlfiend and Treachery could see play in swarm decks or Renolock against Control.
We're still missing a lot of good cards that benefit from beeing discarded, so currently for the deck archetype discardlock this might be a horrible card, because you want to control how much cards you want to discard (since it's already random enough that you can't control which cards will be discarded).
My guess is that we will not see this card in many warlock decks, BUT :
it will see a lot of in game play on board because of Thrall, Deathseer, Evolve and Devolve and maybe sometimes because of Bane of Doom, well you get the point: only the existance of this card will change some game plays.
i think blizzard is purposely making warlock bad.
If you look at user created warlock cards, youll notice the the creativity and playability.
Then look at the cards blizzard makes...
they genuinely dont want to make good or interesting cards.
Concept is fine, but are they helping discard lock here or just want us to play mill? :)
I don't think anyone has a clue about why blizzard is forcing a midrange discard lock. It's just trash tier and it will always be trash tier.
turn 9: howlfiend, treachery and then, spreading madness.
watch your opponent concede
Calm down satan
When this card was released, Dog saw it on stream and laughed straight 3 minutes. It is that bad.
I honestly thought it was just blizzard memeing. But if I see it here I'm just as puzzled as everyone
More Discard?
Unwilling Sacrifice target, I guess... :p
make warlock great again
For all you Lakkari Sacrifice droolin locks, let me enlighten you. If Howlfiend is in play your opponent can proc your quest and force you to discard Nether Portal. Let that sink in... That's how bad this minion is. You can't even play it in the already bad quest discard deck. It actually makes it worse!
Brain Kibler won a game with it? Is he that tweaker streamer? ...not impressed. Anyone can win a game with any deck. I've won many games with discard but its nothing great. Most games suck, and my point still stands. There's more risk in playing it then not. However the card itself will work great with treachery and that's probably the main deck for it.
I really doubt that such a situation will occur very often. Unless you only have 1-2 cards left to complete the quest, you probably won't have enough cards in your hand to complete the quest even if they hit your Howlfiend 6 times. Let's say you need to discard 3 more cards to complete the quest, by that point your hand should be very small from the previous discards and now your opponent needs to hit your Howlfiend 3 times to complete your quest and an additional time to discard the reward.
As I remember it, Kibler bashed the quest quite a few times while playing it though, and he ended up having a sub 50% win-rate while playing a quest deck.
Back to the card though, playing it early will more than likely lead it to being hit more than twice, discarding more than ''1 or 2 cards'', playing it late just results in you bending over and inviting your opponent to try and discard your entire hand. Saying a card ''has'' to be played early otherwise it's a dead card, when it's early game potential is already close to having a negative effect hardly promotes the use of it. Whether you play the quest or not, a card that promotes your hand being empty without a powerful effect like Deathwing is likely never going to see play. You don't want it early because you don't want to tap-pass on turn 4, you don't want to discard removal or even the quest reward if you still haven't gotten to play it so it's a dead draw later.
tl:dr the effect is just way too easy for the opponent to abuse for this to be worth considering at this point, if the minion only discarded on your turn it'd be a different story, but as it is you only ever want to give this away through Treachery or killing the opponent's Sylv in wild.
