Blizzard Moving Away from Battle.net Branding
Blizzard will be moving away from branding their online service as Battle.net and will instead refer to it as "Blizzard" tech.
Quote from BlizzardWe’re going to be transitioning away from using the Battle.net name for our gaming service and the functionality connected to it. Battle.net technology will continue to serve as the central nervous system for Blizzard games—nothing is changing in that regard. We’ll just be referring to it as Blizzard tech instead. You've already seen this recently with things like "Blizzard Streaming" and "Blizzard Voice," and more changes are on the way. When we created Battle.net, the idea of including a tailored online-gaming service together with your game was more of a novel concept, so we put a lot of focus on explaining what the service was and how it worked, including giving it a distinct name. Over time, though, we’ve seen that there’s been occasional confusion and inefficiencies related to having two separate identities under which everything falls—Blizzard and Battle.net. Given that built-in multiplayer support is a well-understood concept and more of a normal expectation these days, there isn’t as much of a need to maintain a separate identity for what is essentially our networking technology.
We just wanted to make sure everyone was aware as we moved forward with this change over the next several months; we’ll provide any relevant updates as the transition progresses.
with the trend of simplifying everything, I expect to see in future an announcement like "due to our customers confusing starcraft and warcraft universes, we are going to combine the two and call it star-war (without an s in the end so please do not confuse this). now thrall is going to be replaced by zerathul a protoss shaman the forsaken is to be called raynor's raiders blah blah..."
"Over time, we’ve seen that there’s been occasional confusion"... where? Who? Who was confused about battle.net? Did you get too many phones form the weapon developers trying to work with you or the state department of defense was calling you or maybe some people who were trying to reproduce some famous battles or... who? Who was confused?
Sigh where is the brokeback emote when you need it
Why would they want to move away from Battle.net when it make itself so present with the other games that are attached to it and the convenience of it being near its neighbors? Battle.net has also made a great name for itself and when it changes people will have to learn about this new place because it's basically brand new. Does anyone agree with me? :o
That'll be $10 to change your Battle.net name, Blizzard.
Sounds rather logical from a business point of view.
If you are on this site you already know what battle.net is and this news won't impact you at all. However for someone first trying blizz games I can see how it is confusing to suddenly be confronted with battle.net, it doesn't really make sense. I don't think they are renaming it, the Blizzard tech is just slapped on, the point is they are not using battle.net as it doesn't even mean anything to players playing blizzard games.
I don't think Blizzard is targeting any of us with this change, we all know what battle.net is/was.
It always felt kind of weird to navigate to a battle.net website for blizzard games.
inb4 paid BlizzardTag name change news
Great. Now where is Tyrande?
I don't know why they're doing.
But why not just call it blizzard battle.net.
This is why we can't have more than 6 emotes.
JARAXXUS... IS... SORRY...
I will still be calling it battle net, dont like it ? Tough titties.
wow, so rebellious, much protest wow
lel
I first played on battle.net back in 1997, with Diablo (original game of the franchise).
So yes, that name will be missed here. And the explanation is weak. Steam is owned by Valve, pretty much the same thing, and it doesn't seem to be a problem for Valve that they have 2 different brands.
The difference is, is steam is a gaming platform that many different companies are a part off, it wouldn't make sense for it to be called valve. Battle.net is only for blizzard games, it's just not needed for there to be a distinction between the 2.
Battle.net is iconic...It's like the Blizzard national anthem...Changing such a historic branding is a huge mistake...Am fully convinced monkeys have taken over Blizzard headquarters at this point. Also don't get why everything has to be dumbed to brain dead levels including most of the games.
Also who are all these people that confuse battle.net and blizzard? Sounds like bullshit.
And the name ''Blizzard Tech'' LMAO Is that real life? Damn is that a bad replacement name. The name is as brain dead and unimaginative as the idea to change it in the first place.
Own company shits on 20 years of historic history because 0.1% of people get very confused between Battle.net and Blizzard...Gimme a break.
Next year - BREAKING NEWS.... Due to confusion of Warcraft the name will now be called Craft.
Next year - BREAKING NEWS.... Due to confusion of Warcraft and other franchises, the names will be:
Hearthstone - Heroes of Warcraft -> Blizzard CCG
Hereos of the Storm -> Blizzard
LoL/DotaMOBAWorld of Warcraft -> Blizzard Craft ('cause Blizzard MMORPG is like +9 decks slots in
HearthstoneBlizzard CCG: too confusing)Starcraft -> Blizzard RTS
Diablo and Overwatch unchanged...for now.
Kappa.
None of the new players will really know about Battle.net, and old players like (assumedly) yourself have either moved on or will be playing regardless of the change. Assuredly they think they'll be able to get more noobs to spend money by helping them find the download than loose old players due to a surface change.
Who cares just give us Tyrande already
