I hear a lot of people like Sylvanas Windrunner as a legendary. Is she good for both constructed decks and arena mode? I was playing a Rogue recently and I got two choices for legendaries. The first time I had Sylvanas Windrunner, Ysera, and Captain Greenskin. I didn't have any weapons chosen yet and Captain Greenskin seems like a weak addition to just the hero power. I was really torn between Ysera and Sylvanas. I decided Ysera is only good late late game and Sylvanas is better early. Then I got another legendary choice and again had Sylvanas Windrunner along with Nat Pagle, and Edwin VanCleef. I again chose Sylvanas due to her popularity. I considered VanCleef but he seems to be more conditionally good.
Anyway Sylvanas never seemed much of a factor in any of my games. So, I'm wondering if she's not a great Arena card or if I just don't know what she's good at. Is there some way of playing her I should be aware of?
I've never actually seen her steal anything. When she comes out, typically one of three things happen:
- She gets silenced and is then just a 5/5 for 5 (which is fine but not exciting)
- The opponent sends all his minions into her, killing her and leaving nothing for her to steal (which is not bad if you get two or more minions out of it)
- The opponent ignores her and attacks something else (typically in a situation where the minions Sylvanas can attack aren't big enough to kill her)
I would've taken the first Sylvanas but not the second. VanCleef is like combo on crack. Turn 2 coin into 4/4 is devastating in arena and there's also the dream of turn 2 backstab your 2-drop, Coin, get a 6/6.
Anyway... Sylvanas is really good as she changes the flow of the game. You'll probably never get to use her deathrattle and that's fine. It's not the deathrattle that's important, it's the threat of it. And the threat of it will force your opponent into unfavorable plays and trades.
Your opponent cannot just ignore her unless you're either so far ahead or so far behind that it doesn't matter anyway.
They did try to take her out quickly and to leave nothing for her to mind control. So, I guess in that sense she's kind of a board clear mechanic. Thanks for the explanations.
