Hey all,
Warlock got some good cards in the Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion and I feel this class finally has strong potential in Standard format after the loss of Reno Jackson. This is my version of Control Warlock but with emphasis on damaging the opponent's deck.
As mentioned above, the deck's theme is attacking the opponent's deck. Below is an explanation for each of the cards choices and combos:
- Dirty Rat to pull out a combo piece or a Battlecry card and deal with it using tools like Drain Soul, Siphon Soul, Hellfire, Defile, Twisting Nether, Blastcrystal Potion or even Abyssal Enforcer.
- Gnomeferatu to burn the top card from your opponent's deck.
- Howlfiend combined with Treachery to discard cards from your opponent's hand. You can potentially discard 8 cards from your opponent's hand using minions, spells or Bloodreaver Gul'dan's hero power. Mortal Coil and Defile can be devastating.
- Skulking Geist to burn one mana spells from your opponent's deck and yours so try to use Mortal Coil before you lose it. While this card is a late-game card, you can still get value out of it. Notable one mana spells:
- Unplayed Quests: Some players choose to play the Quest later in the game for more board presence. Open the Waygate, Lakkari Sacrifice, and Fire Plume's Heart are examples.
- Druid: Earthen Scales, Jade Idol
- Hunter: Arcane Shot, Hunter's Mark, On the Hunt, Play Dead
- Mage: Arcane Missiles
- Paladin: All Paladin's Secrets
- Priest: Inner Fire, Potion of Madness, Power Word: Shield
- Rogue: Cold Blood, Hallucination, Razorpetal from Razorpetal Lasher
- Shaman: Evolve, Lightning Bolt
- Warlock: Mortal Coil
- Warrior: Blood To Ichor, Shield Slam, Upgrade!, Whirlwind
Bloodreaver Gul'dan is a great late-game card, not only will it summon Abyssal Enforcer and Despicable Dreadlord, if they died prior to playing Bloodreaver Gul'dan, but Siphon Life (hero power) is also strong.
The Lich King will provide you with protection and you're guaranteed at least one Death Knight card. Anti-Magic Shell, Death and Decay, Death Coil, Death Grip and Frostmourne are great control cards, while Army of the Dead, Doom Pact and Obliterate are conditional but can be used nonetheless.
Potential additions to the deck can include Weapon Removal cards like Acidic Swamp Ooze, Harrison Jones, and Eater of Secrets for Secrets. Since this is a control deck then board control cards like Corrupting Mist and / or Shadowflame can be added to win the board back.
Change Log:
- (8/14/2017): Advice of Ratzenfumel; removed one Howlfiend + one Mortal Coil for two Doomsayers for more board control and prep to play Bloodreaver Gul'dan.
- (8/14/2017): Advice from DaKoen; subsittuted one Dirty Rat for one Voidcaller.
Further testing on Tainted Zealot or Earthen Ring Farseer to be done. - (8/15/2017): Advice from bardozan; substituted the Blastcrystal Potion and Ironbeak Owl with one Possessed Villager and one Mistress of Mixtures for early board control.
Note: Keep in mind before you downvote that the deck still needs refining.
Your constructive criticism is highly appreciated.
Great ideas. I'll try them out.
Thoughts on comboing Rattling Rascal with Treachery anyone?
I am thinking of adding Mistress of Mixtures for early board control. Any thoughts?
She's great in Warlock. Check my reply below.
I built a similar deck, it's quite fun. I recommend adding a copy of Possessed Villager. It enables Defile twice, more discard for them!
Great idea. Which card did you replace?
As I said, it's a similar deck but it has differences.
- 1x Skulking Geist (never opened one, but I would add if I did), 1x Ironbeak Owl, 1x Blastcrystal Potion, 1x Voidwalker
+ 2x Mistress of Mixtures, 1x Possessed Villager, 1x Mortal Coil (1 more copy of 1 mana deal 1 seems good for the combo)
Any thoughts on Rattling Rascal with Treachery?
Seems slow but might give it a shot.
For 7 Mana you get a 5/5 immediately, and if you have board presence then you can get another 5/5 the same turn. Anyone playing N'Zoth has a chance of getting it back without the Battlecry effect. I'll give it a shot anf let you know. The downfall of this deck seems to be board presence.
Why not just play Bonemare then? That's 7 mana 5/5 and 4/4 "charge" with 1 card. Of course it needs a minion on board. You can play it with a cheap minion like Voidwalker or Possessed Villager. You might want to save Villager for Treachery combo but hey, that's also a great value.
Thanks DaKoen. I think you might be right. Lately, Dirty Rat has been a disaster for me when played early. Maybe Voidwalker instead? It's a demon so it'll synergize with Bloodreaver Gul'dan.
I changed one Dirty Rat for one Voidcaller but kept Ironbeak Owl for now. I'll play later and let you know how it goes.
Thank you for your contribution! Let me know how it turns out for you.
I left the Ironbeak Owl out and used Spellbreaker [/card]instead since I was lacking on 4 drops. I may drop a [card]Dirty Rat in favor of a Voidcaller. I'm thinking maybe a King Mukla maybe coupled with a Lorewalker Chocould be somewhat useful if trying to go for the mill game. I think the deck is cool. We really need more cards in the future geared towards milling.
I do not have Lorewalker Cho or King Mukla so I cannot test it myself. May you try it and let us know?
I agree with your comment for more mill cards, whether in Warlock or not. I really miss the days when I used to play Mill Rogue and Mill Druid...
Any thoughts on Rattling Rascal with Treachery?
With you trying to get to super late game. Doomsayer + Threachery is 5 mana combo that clears the field. Not only is Doomsayer a good card for early also for late it's great to clear the board.
I don't like howlfiend that much in this deck. Its great that it discards cards from your oppents hand its a Demon as well. So i guess playing 1 should be fine instead. And adding a second twisting nether + doomsayer for double clear to set up for bloodreaver.
Makes sense, I'll try that.
I added a change log with your suggested amendments.
Thanks!
Also, using Dirty Rat together with things that remove only one card at a time you'll lose card advantage. Doomsayer works well with Dirty Rat.
-1 Siphon Soul
+1 Doomsayer
