I'm orch. Legendary player from Poland. This season i picked burn mage by Reynad. So probably nothing new to you... BUT... this is not a most popular list that's why i decided to post it with a bit of a guide. I played only this deck from rank 17 to legend without changing a single card. My longest win streak was from rank 7 to rank 3 (15-0) with total record of 122-73 with no negative matchups.
Below screen from record just before hitting legend and general record.
So about card choices.
Many people don't play these cards: The Black Knight, Sorcerer's Apprentice, Babbling Book. They tend to put Ice Barrier, Volcanic Potion, Bloodmage Thalnos. And i think it is a bad idea.
Let's start why not playing this cards. Bloodmage Thalnos is very slow and in many aggro matchups you rly don't want to see him. Also without Emperor Thaurissan and cheap burn from Ice Lance it is not a good idea to play him. Ice Barrier of course it's not bad against aggro, but when you really need 8 hp then you are probably going to lose it anyway. And spending 3 mana for just making your losing longer does not work and of course playing it in a control matchup is just bad. Volcanic Potion is a type of a rly bad card in that meta i think. It appears to be great when you think of any aggro matchup but it is not. The first reason is that most of aggro decks can easily survive 2dmg AOE. Its just too weak. Its good to check this card winrate... its terrible. Just an illusion of gaining something.
Why to play The Black Knight? It is just better firelands vs all taunt in a game. Tirion? No problem! Alley Armorsmith? No problem! Thing from below? No problem! And much more... of course in rogue matchup it is a dead card... but there are no many rogues. Sorcerer's Apprentice is A CARD. Huge tempo swing? You got it! Turn 4 double apprentice into Primordial Glyph and Frostbolt etc... Of course it also enables standard tempo plays for agressive early game which is super significant. The last but not least is Babbling Book. Turn 1 vs aggro is good. Of course Mana Wyrm is much better but you don't always draw it... and this #PavelingBook saves a day in many situations. It is cheap. It had body. It gives you a spell. It is just what you need in this deck.
The only possible tech i can see now is Gluttonous Ooze. This card is nuts. I have no reason for not trying it. It has body. Destroys Medivhs weapon, Arcanite Reapers, Jade Claws and so on. Also body 3/3 is nice and armor also good too :)
Maybe now how to play with this baby. I will say that you need to deeply think about possibilities which this cards gives you. There is ton of card generation. And with girls there is possibility of huge tempo gains. This deck usually acts like a tempo oriented one so you really want to spend your mana in a most efficient way. It can easily switch to SMOrc mode but most of games is around tempo, keeping board, pushing cheap damage and just finishing with some burn spells. It is not a typical control deck. It's not about playing long value games. Of course you can outvaluse some decks but it's not basic task of this deck.
(Below part is shorter then I wanted... i just deleted my text accidentaly ://///)
Vs Aggro
It is important to gain board. Even when you need to play minion just for a body and nothing more. Usually keeping girls or valets for value is bad. You need to play them and gain board and control it. Once you lose it it is 90% lost. Overall aggro is not that bad for this deck. Just go for ooze if you meet a lot of Arcanite Reaper or a lot of Medivhs.
Vs Midrange
It is about balance between tempo, not letting them to kill you and finding window to burn them down. Vs ShameMans it is easy AF. Vs Paladins it is hard AF. Vs Paladin the most important is Polymorph, Medivh, the Guardian and early agression. You can try to cheat them with lack of burn to just get an element of surprise. Sometimes it works pretty well. Also Pyroblast is not only the finisher here. Hitting their face for 10 when you still have 12-18 in hand is better then going other way.
Vs Control
Vs Taunt warrior it is about their armor vs your burn. This is very dependent on their draw and their plan. You must read a lot in this matchup. Find a window for burn them down. But sometimes you will be able to win just with Medivhs insane value. The most important here is to adapt. not to just force your own plan. It is not midrange Shaman :P Vs Druid it is much more dependent on their draw but here you dont read a lot. You focus on pushing early cheap damage and finding window to burn them down ASAP. ofc care about their 3-4 armor cards which can screw your whole game. And dont be mad if they just overrun you when hitting early ramp + early jades + nourish... then it is just #prepcoinconcede. Fortunately it is not so often.
Some remarks
Vs priest it is easy if they are not silence. Just kill them and be aware of Priest of the Feast. vs silence you need to kill every minion ASAP. even when fireball into 1/3. Maybe not always but yes... any minion is a huuuuuge threat. Make reads on their hand and just kill everything like scared woman kills bugs :P And try to negate their draw - this can be crucial. Vs quest rogue you need to kill them ASAP. Go for maximum cheap early dmg, stall what you can and go for face ASAP. Usually you even don't give a fck about their 5/5. Just IceBlocks/Glyph into Nova/burn face. No always but usually it is the case. Fighting for board is a bad idea here.
Sry for my English :P Any questions / remarks will be appreciated and may be answered. Upvote if you like.
interesting deck, however very easy to get out played by shaman or any heavy minion based deck. Stone hill defender is the bane of this deck. Deck feels a tad greedy. And right now on NA im seeing too many oozes in legend for this to be viable. It does shit on secret mage so props on that.
Thats true that ooze can rly hurt but burn mage (regardless tech choices) is capable of winning a lot of games without medivh, but you are right. If everyone can shut medivhs weapon down then your win ratio will hurt. How much depends on your skill and a bit of luck but still... it will not leave it unaffected.
But I cant agree that this deck is bad against shaman or other board oriented decks cause i played almost only vs such decks... I got 9-1 vs shamans and lost only once to absolutely insane draw. And all games I feel like "ok. thx shammy for free win" - that is how easy those games were. And vs other board oriented decks you still have powerfull openers with huge tampo gains and what is more you have a lot of comeback/stall cards :P Ofc if they have godlike curve then it is rly hard to win, but it is not an "outplay" in any way.
you have one board clear with flamestrike which shaman due to the nature of the most common builds can easily exploit. Stone hill being able to refill defensive options makes gaining board a problem.
Its not a bad deck but its too greedy for any longevity in legend. probably good grinding ladder though but once you hit legend switch to druid.
Not at all. I consider meteor as a board clear too. What is more there is a lot of one target removals too. Valets are MVP of shaman matchup and early agression from mana wyrm/girls/cheap spells is more than enough for shammy. After un goro shaman is not super agresive so if this deck can even hold aggro druid (with a lot of problems but still xD) then shaman is not a problem at all.Dont forget about primordial glyphs which usually are a great source of additional removal/stall.
The issue I see with that is people on NA have learned to be cautious when it comes to meteor so in that match the target you want to clear that is the biggest threat tends to be are the far left thus meaning the value from meteor is reduced. Now obviously thats why poly is in the deck but, realistically this not going to be an option all the time and when it is then you get into the scenario of poly something and remove it or removing 2 things is still pointless as bloodlust then pushes you to the point where your block is popped and your pretty boned the next few turns if you dont get the 2nd block in play.
Here is where that volcanic potion that every pro is using right now would play well. Now sure you have methods of getting it, Kabal courier, primordial glyph babbling book, but thats rng and as we all know RNG CAN BE A BITCH. In many ways a blizzard would be more viable depending on the meta at the time.
Again this is my perspective at legend...20 games played 10/10
I play Eu so maybe there is a bit difference. But still in general this matchup is considered favored for mage (not my opinin just statistics) and this list is the most agressive one so it is even better than average for shaman cause you are never allowing them to have a board. book/wyrm/apprentice/arcanologist/valet/frostbolt/glyph... 14 cards to get tempo and push shaman to ground asap. They need time to set bloodlust turn and its not hard to not let them do this. But i dont want to argue forever. You have different experience than me and that is ok. Both are good. Thx for sharing with yours :) It should also help people to get understanding of a deck and this particular matchup how different it can be depending on list / region / players habbits etc.
I dont have Black Knight and no dust to craft it. So I'm just going to replace it with Glut. What do you think?
Sorry, what is Glut ?
Gluttenous Ooze
I think its ok. I dont find Black Knight super important. Especially if you are not familiar with this card cause it requiers a bit of feeling to play it well. But always try to think what do you need. If there is a lot of board oriented decks like shaman/midrange pally/etc it is better to go mb double meteor or double kabal courier than glut. Recently i face a lot of druids. For those mb even go doomsayer. But if you face a lot pally/pirate/medivh decks then Glut is probably best :) Anyway... sometimes it is better to play non optimal list but the one you are feeling well.
Black Knight into Glut would be so OP on Pally.
What would you remove for Glut ?
I would remove Polymorph probably, cause Glut is best for pirates so i assume you are facing a lot of them. But if you are thinking about palladins... probably i would try to cut one babbling book or kabal courier or meteor/black knight if you do not face druids nor tauntwarriors. Of course both are quite good vs pally too... so its always a bit of hard choice.
