I. Introduction
I reached legend for the first time in the season of April 2017. I had always wanted to reach legend since I started playing. I found good decks and all, but it was frustrating to climb because I didn't know the strategies, mulligans, and such. Now that I have made it, I decided to try and help others. So, I will give extra information such as each card's rationale, strategies and mulligans for each matchup. and provide HS deck tracker replays. This way, you can have a lot more information than other decks provide.
II. Journey to Legend
I made my way to rank 10 using taunt warrior and midrange hunter, but I wasn't very good with those decks, and they were a little boring.
After being stuck at rank 10, I made this deck and started climbing really quickly. I made it to legend in 3 days of playing (for many hours).
Day 1: Rank 10 to Rank 7 (~4 hours)
Day 2: Rank 7 to Rank 3 (~10 hours)
Day 3: Rank 3 to Legend (~6 hours)
My win record: 80-41 (66%) overall
Rank 10 to Rank 5: 30-14 (68%)
Rank 5 to Rank 4: 39-20 (66%) cumulative, 9-6 (60%) this portion
Rank 4 to Rank 3: 47-23 (67%) cumulative, 8-3 (73%) this portion
Rank 3 to Rank 2: 60-31 (66%) cumulative, 13-8 (62%) this portion
Rank 2 to Rank 1: 72-36 (66%) cumulative, 12-7 (63%) this portion
Rank 1 to Legend: 80-41 (66%) cumulative, 8-3 (73%) this portion
III. Cards
Northshire Cleric - This card is for necessary card draw as well as can contest the board on turn 1 or 2.
Potion of Madness - This card is very useful in the current meta so 2 copies are run. It can be used for value trading, help clearing board, and stealing value (with some deathrattles). However, don't wait around in hopes of value when you know you are facing an aggro deck.
Power Word: Shield - This card is to help create value trades, cycle cards, and keep minions alive.
Radiant Elemental - This card helps mana efficiency by using spells at a cheaper cost. The card can contest the board on turn 1 or 2 especially with a Power Word: Shield. The card makes Lyra the Sunshard even better for more spells.
Shadow Visions - This card is used to get extra removal or board clear when necessary. It helps with the consistency a lot. And if you happen to have 2 Radiant Elementals, it will be free which will usually help you find the spell you want.
Shadow Word: Pain - This card is also very useful in the current meta full of multiple small aggro minions. Don't be too afraid to use it early because there you might be able to Shadow Visions another one and there are 2 Book Wyrms. Also use it for tempo, when necessary, but for value consider using Book Wyrm
Kabal Talonpriest - This card helps create value trades and build your board. You can launch ahead early game if you can kill your opponent's board and keep yours. This is especially helpful versus some decks without good board clears.
Shadow Word: Death: There are a good amount of big minions in the meta, ranging from Alexstrasza to Tirion Fordring. If you happen to need more, there is Shadow Visions to get the card from your deck.
Priest of the Feast - This card is a great heal. With 2-3 spells you can help make that aggro opponent concede. Also very useful for heal after Alexstrasza before the mages try to burn you out.
Drakonid Operative - This deck may only be possible due to the sheer power and value of this card. You get a card from your opponent's deck as well as a 5/6 body for 5 mana. No replacement!
Holy Nova - This is not the best board clear, but it has its uses and costs less than Dragonfire Potion. You might use it for a quick heal with Priest of the Feast if necessary.
Lyra the Sunshard - This card does miracles. Getting some priest spells can be a lot of value and with Radiant Elemental(s), the value is magnified. However, don't play the card hoping for it to survive. This card has single-handedly won me many games. The opponent will kill it 9 times out of 10. There is absolutely no replacement!
Dragonfire Potion - This is a very large and important board clear. Use this board clear very wisely unless you Shadow Visionsed another one. A lot of aggro decks concede after this card is played, but drawing it can be difficult at times, which is why Shadow Visions can help.
Netherspite Historian - This card is used to usually get more Drakonid Operatives. It is a good value card that helps enable the dragon theme better after the Blackrock Mountain rotation.
Twilight Drake - This is a solid card that can usually get 2 for 1 trades or removals baited. However, that doesn't mean wait for 10 card hand to play it. It can still be useful to grab the board even with a few cards in hand. This card is probably the best against priest because it can't be dealt with spells then.
Book Wyrm - This card is useful in a similar way to Shadow Word: Pain. However, it is a value card as well. If you are ahead on the board and can afford value, use it. But, if you are behind and need tempo, consider using Shadow Word: Pain.
Primordial Drake - This card is important all around. It provides a board clear, a taunt, and a solid body all for 8 mana. Against many aggro decks, this card wins the game immediately. This is also a very efficient card against priest because it is hard for them to deal with especially if you are ahead on board.
IV. Matchups and Strategies/Mulligans (According to Un'goro Release Meta)
Mulligans:
Vs. Aggro: Mulligans: Northshire Cleric, Potion of Madness, Radiant Elemental, Shadow Word: Pain, and Power Word: Shield (only with Northshire Cleric or Radiant Elemental)
Vs. Midrange: Mulligans: Northshire Cleric, Potion of Madness, Radiant Elemental, Shadow Word: Pain, and Power Word: Shield (only with Northshire Cleric or Radiant Elemental), Kabal Talonpriest (only if you can play it on a minion immediately next turn to help secure board), possibly Netherspite Historian with Twilight Drake in hand
Vs. Control: Mulligans: Northshire Cleric, Potion of Madness, Radiant Elemental, Shadow Word: Pain, and Power Word: Shield (only with Northshire Cleric or Radiant Elemental)Kabal Talonpriest (with 1 or 2 drop to help secure board), Netherspite Historian (especially with a lower cost dragon in hand)
Strategies:
Pirate Warrior: 7-4 (64%)
Try your best to control them early on. Use Shadow Visions to fetch removal or board clear. Northshire Cleric and Radiant Elemental can absorb 3 damage. Potion of Madness can clear 1-2 of their minions to buy time. Don't be afraid to Shadow Word: Pain a 2/3 since you won't get much more value against pirates. If you make it to turn 5-6, you can possibly control them with your dragons. A Primordial Drake will basically lock them out and give you the win. Use Priest of the Feast to heal if possible.
Taunt Warrior: 5-5 (50%)
You want to try your best to aggro out your dragons efficiently against them. If you can get them before they get board clear, then you can get a lot of damage in. Maybe pick a Ysera from Netherspite Historian to help in late game. Don't overextend on board and use removals wisely especially, because they have many 3 attack or lower minions (Bloodhoof Brave, Alley Armorsmith, Tar Creeper, and Dirty Rat). Try to get good value from Lyra the Sunshard.
Elemental Shaman: 2-1 (67%)
Looking at the Elemental Shaman deck, the main large threats are Fire Elemental, Blazecaller, and Kalimos, Primal Lord. Try to save Shadow Word: Deaths carefully. Jades may get big, but you can clear their stuff with your dragons and Dragonfire Potion. Fire Elemental can also be killed with Dragonfire Potion. Use board clear efficiently. Try to beat them on board with your efficient dragons. And don't be too shy to take Hex from their deck with Drakonid Operative. They can only Hex two of your cards, so do not fret if they simply Hex a Northshire Cleric or Radiant Elemental.
Quest Rogue: 3-6 (33%)
This matchup is very tough and relies on your opponent drawing badly. If they are playing the version with Flame Elemental, try your best to Potion of Madness their Igneous Elemental and kill it to steal the Flame Elementals. Kill as much as you can on board, because everything killed early equals killing a 5/5. Dragonfire Potion is important including Shadow Visions for another one. You can also try to aggro them down quickly with dragons, but it may be a little too slow. Lyra the Sunshard can pull a lot of weight here if you manage to get a lot of spells, because spells are immediate value instead of delayed, longer value of minions. Dragonfire Potion is also your best friend if you manage to get it with Shadow Visions and/or draw it. Prioritize killing charge minions, because they can be bounced and charge again.
Miracle Rogue: 3-5 (38%)
Aggro out the dragons before the Miracle Rogue gets started. Try to set up a board to contest turn 6 Gadgetzan Auctioneer. Kill Gadgetzan Auctioneer at almost any cost. Shadow Visions is important to grab extra Shadow Word: Deaths for Arcane Giants and Edwin VanCleef. Kill Sherazin, Corpse Flower efficiently in hopes that they can't revive it. Dragonfire Potion can also be helpful to clear specifically against Gadgetzan Auctioneer and possibly Sherazin, Corpse Flower.
Murloc Paladin: 10-6 (63%)
Try to control them early against murlocs. Take useful cards with Drakonid Operative such as Truesilver Champion, Consecration, Equality, Primordial Drake, Aldor Peacekeeper, Spikeridged Steed, Tirion Fordring, and maybe Hydrologist. Use removals carefully, because they can go against control pretty well. Use Priest of the Feast to heal as necessary. Try to get good value with Lyra the Sunshard.
Midrange Paladin: 1-0 (100%)
Similar to Murloc Paladin, except be careful of a little more control from them. Try to use Shadow Word: Death on Tirion Fordring and Ragnaros, Lightlord.
Midrange Hunter: 13-4 (76%)
Similar to Murloc Paladin except easier matchup. Primordial Drake has good chance to close game. If possible use Potion of Madness on Kindly Grandmother or Rat Pack, but don't set your mind to it. Just try to survive 8-10 turns and you should be able to win unless if they have Kill Command or such. When using Drakonid Operative, try to take cards that can help you survive or fill in your curve.
Aggro Druid: 13-2 (87%)
Similar to Pirate Warrior except easier matchup. Shadow Word: Pain on 2/3 or more preferably and definitely on Vicious Fledgling. A board clear can make them concede, otherwise Primordial Drake will most likely close the game. Watch out for Living Mana and Savage Roar or such any time they have a big board.
Jade Druid: 4-1 (80%)
Aggro dragons out before they start generating value with Jades. Maybe take Ysera from Netherspite Historian for closing the game with Ysera Awakens or Nightmare. Efficiently remove their board and build, since they have no good board clear. Definitely remove Fandral Staghelm and Gadgetzan Auctioneer.
Zoolock: 0-1 (0%)
Similar to Pirate Warrior and Aggro Druid. I only lost because he happened to have exactly the 2nd Soulfire for lethal.
Elemental Mage: 2-0 (100%)
Similar to Elemental Shaman except easier matchup. You can aggro out dragons and efficiently remove their board. Potion of Madness on Pyros is amazing and not very many other minions to use it on. They might Fireball your minions, but you can play out more dragons with Netherspite Historians.
Freeze Mage: 7-3 (70%)
Aggro out dragons and try your best to kill Doomsayer to save board. Popping their Ice Block early is very important. Steal burn spells or Ice Block with Drakonid Operative. Use Priest of the Feast to heal back up after they Alexstrasza. Try to have Shadow Word: Death ready for Alexstrasza. Use Lyra the Sunshard to get a lot of value in hand.
Control Priest: 2-1 (67%)
Try to aggro them down with dragons since they can't clear with Dragonfire Potion otherwise try to get more value with Ysera and/or Drakonid Operatives. Twilight Drakes will prove to be very useful if they have high health and are kept healthy. Lyra the Sunshard can bring a lot of value especially if you got a 2nd one with Drakonid Operative.
Dragon Priest: 2-0 (100%)
Similar to Control Priest. Trade your dragons efficiently against theirs by using Power Word: Shield and Kabal Talonpriest because they will struggle to clear dragons.
Other: 7-2 (78%)
You should probably assume it is aggro and play accordingly.

VI. FAQ/Tips
Replacement for Shadow Visions?
No replacement.
Replacement for Lyra the Sunshard?
NO REPLACEMENT!
Why only 1 Priest of the Feast and Dragonfire Potion?
I only have one copy of Dragonfire Potion so I stuck in one copy of Priest of the Feast. Otherwise, Tempostorm's list calls for 2 copies of Dragonfire Potion. I didn't craft a second one, and the healing proved to be very useful. No, that doesn't mean you can have 0 Dragonfire Potions. You need at least one!
Tips:
- Know you matchups/mulligans well.
- Assume aggro if it is a class with 2 different archetypes.
- Don't get frustrated/tilted.
- Think about your opponent's plays and your counters/reactions.
- Watch some replays for better understanding.
- Have fun! (Why I stopped playing Midrange Hunter and Taunt Warrior, Boring!)
VII. Conclusion
So that is how I got to legend. I hope you use all the information I provided. I wish you luck and success on your journey. Comment below and rate the deck with upvote or downvote. Have fun.
edit (5/6/2017): Thanks for all the support guys. I didn't imagine getting this far, let alone 100 upvotes. I hope you guys are having fun and getting to legend!
I gave you a vote up for the extensive write up but unfortunately I didn't fare too well with this deck after 10 matches. 2 wins-8 losses. I also did a 10 game run with murloc pally and was 7-3.
Good Stuff, let me try this deck, but im short 1 shadow visions, 2 primal drakes, and Lyra. Lets see how far I can get starting at rank 20 this month.
Hello Shivam gratz for legend i play almost like similar deck with my version its really strong taunt warrior is only the hard match up

Great deck / very nice elaborate guide with all the replays included.
Only edited -1x Holy Nova +1x Dragonfire Potion, deck works like a charm.
Amazing work. +1 for the quality of the guide
