Edit 6/5/14: People are asking me to explain some choices
Why no Ice lances?
-Ice Lance is a dead card in your hand most of the time and it having to have a second piece to the combo means frostbolt will be sitting in your hand until later as well. Frost bolt is for board control in this deck rarely do you go face with it. It's great for picking off annoying Zoo minions behind SB or VW. It's good against cleric so the priest can't run away with board pressure. Combined with ping, It offers a good and efficient answer to azure drakes.
Why Sunwalkers?
-They are preference, not required. The reason I run sunwalkers is because of how much they can soak and are underrated against aggro decks. They also combo well with free/cheap molten giants. I don't like having mirror images as my only taunt in my deck and the card works well as solid turn 6 play against control.
Why Water Elemental?
-Why not? It being a 3/6 makes it especially resilient against aggro decks. Its durability makes it annoying to deal with for aggro players and most of the time will soak a soulfire/hammer of wrath/charge of a weapon etc. If not dealt with, it's easy to run away with the board.
Control mage without Doomsayer + nova?
-I personally think the combo is overrated. I'm a fan of consistency, hence double almost everything. Doomsayer vs control is a dead card. There is nothing in the deck silence worthy if you were to play Doomsayer which means in a control match up a silence is probably waiting in hand. 4 cards for an unreliable combo seems silly to me. I know that's not the only way to play doomsayer you can play it before the turn you think druid is going to play a big minion or you can use it as a sort of taunt against aggro but it just doesn't fit very well into this deck. We have enough minions to apply board pressure and with double flamestrike a doomsayer clear is almost never needed.
Why double Flamestrike?
-Board clear. Without doomsayer + nova we need a reliable and powerful form of board clear. Having 2 means you will almost always have it when you need it.
Why Molten Giants?
-I cannot stress enough how important Molten Giants are vs control Priest/Warrior/Druid. I believe the warrior match up is the hardest in the game, unless you have molten giants, then it becomes one of the easiest. They also soak a lot in the way of removal which makes playing Rag later a safer play. Molten Giants are also very good against aggro since you will be getting low very quickly. Playing a cheap giant + images can really turn a game around, quick. You will usually have both of your iceblocks by the time you can play a giant vs control matchups, which is a huge swing for you if they don't have an immediate answer to the giant.
What do you mulligan for?
-Depends on the match up. Typically, you'll want to try and get some early draw power. If you have a nice curve in your hand don't hesitate to play the board pressure game. AoP into WE into Azure into Sunwalker is nothing to be ignored.
Any questions feel free to ask :)
Edit 6/6/14
-1 Sunwalker, + 1 Vaporize
-1 Acolyte, + 1 Counterspell
Vaporize offers some good Leeroy counters when you want to save your iceblock for a turn longer. It also helps against control warrior and druid.
Counterspell is invaluable in the mirror matchup and can shut down those annoying Force of Nature combos. It also can mess up an entire turn for miracle rogue.
Edit 6/8/14
-1 Counterspell
+1 Sunwalker
Counterspell is too situational in most cases and it just feels like you have too many secrets with it in the deck. I'll be experimenting with Frost Novas in the coming days to counter good early hands from rush decks.
Started playing this deck on the ladder 4 days before the end of season 3. Went from rank 17 to 10 very quickly with 77% win rate over 27 games. Unfortunately the streak didn't last and I spent the final hours of season 3 getting my ass handed to me by just about every flavor of deck. I ended the season at rank 12. Current stats are: 59% win rate over 39 games (23-16). Here's the stat breakdown:
I don't think this deck has a particularly bad match-up (although Hunters running Flare can really ruin your day). Instead the deck is very reliant on the draw and the survival choices you make while your waiting for your win condition to develop.
I really enjoy this style of Feeze Mage control so I will keep playing this deck on the ladder and hopefully get better at it. Once I have enough dust to craft two mountain giants, I'd like to give this deck a try as an alternative.
I don't usually have trouble with aggro decks when running this deck; I end up having a hard time against other control decks, like handlock. In my experience, this deck doesn't bring as much heat coming into the late game as a handlock deck might. Any tips when playing against other heavier control decks?
I love this deck, i have no troubles with aggro, zoo, handlock, miracle rogues, etc. literally nothing. I have lost only 2 matches and that was because my iceblock happened to be at the bottom of my deck vs a miracle and that's it. Literally best deck ever, I'm climbing the ladder like no tomorrow. Only con is that usually games always go to 10+rounds, which I don't really mind since its almost a guaranteed win for me. This deck is very easy to learn as I just crafted it today and went 15-2.
Very good deck. Even withou Pyro, Rag and Alex i keep getting victories and a lot of fun with it. The only problem that without mentioned cards game usually gets to fatique state, thus games are quite long.
Even with the explanation about Molten Giants I still don't get why you use them. I mean control decks have ever a realible way to remove big minions, also it seems to me that it's a suboptimal choose since you don't have a good way to put them into play. And Molten Giants are not the easiest way to beat a Control deck.
Replacements for Rag?
It is worth to use Archmage Antonidas instead of Ragnaros the Firelord?
I believe you will lose the board clearing from Rags but it gives you more finishing ability. Though I doubt he would last very long as he would be an immediate target that again doesn't have the clearing ability that Rags has (play him then you get at least one turn of Rags hitting something before they can deal with him. Antonidas is a little harder I believe)
why are you not running bloodmage
What rank have you achieved with this deck so far? thanks in advance!
I noticed this deck has a lot of trouble dealing with zoo and other aggro decks if it doesn't draw frostbolt. What do you think of the addition of 1 (or maybe even 2) frost novas? No doomsayers, just frost nova. It can save you a lot of life for 3 mana, before you play your blizzards and stuff. Thoughts?
replacement for one ice block?? I just have one :)
Zoo is one of the easier matchups for me honestly. If you feel like you lack control and want to stop bleeding against rush decks replace counter spell and vaporize with 2 novas. If you want 1 nova, replace counterspell.
I highly recommend you craft 2. There is no true replacement because it is so unique, you can try another sunwalker or 2 frost novas. Remove Counterspell for the 2nd nova.
I climbed to rank 6 with this deck last season. I could have gone further but school and family got in the way, I'm aiming for rank 3+ this season.
It shouldn't have trouble against Zoo. If you're getting rushed down don't start panicking. I've won countless games against rush decks while sitting at 1-6 hp. It's about being patient and having a clear plan.
Ice Barrier is not a filler spell, it's not something you play just because you have 3 mana floating to play it, unless the enemy deck is rush. Plan and bait. Play it the turn you play giants or the turn after to help save your iceblock procs. This deck requires an extensive amount of planning.
Is there a replacement for Alexstrasza ?
Unfortunately, no Alex is just too unique to have a replacement.
