You rarely wait for the card you need because you've got two of all them with the exception of Al'Akir the Windlord and a Fire Elemental.  Al'Akir is just as good as the fire elemental to get you a quick 3 points of damage, but has a few other perks if he survives.

Use your totems and Rockbiter to control early on.  Totem usage will power your Thing from Below enough that it will generally cost zero by the time you need it.
