Rwl everyone! I'm HiMurky, a Murloc player that has been playing Murlocs (with every class) and uploading games to YouTube for a long time and I finally made it to legend with a Murloc deck that I wanted to share. It made it almost undefeated from Rank 5 to Rank 1 and I recorded the whole climb. Here you have some of those clips to see how the deck works. Enjoy!:
If you want to see the rest of the climb please check out my YouTube channel: HiMurky on YouTube
I've also started streaming playing Murloc decks for every class at: HiMurky on Twitch
If you want to know when I go live it would be great if you could follow me on Twitter: HiMurky on Twitter
Please feel free to ask, comment, suggest, improve or anything you come up with, I will rwlrwly appreciate it. Thank you for your time ;)
General Playstle
Murloc Hunter is very similar to Face Hunter as they both look to damage the face while their opponents do the trading. The main difference is that Murlocs not always do that instant charging damage but do more damage on the upcoming turns due to synergy's between them, therefore you will sometimes need to make sacrifices in order to keep them alive (even though they are often harder to kill than 1 HP chargers). The main advantage of this deck is that it can out race any aggro class if they don't clear the board fully on every turn. You always want to try and sneak a hero power from turn 4 on-wards as the deck lacks card draw and use the synergy's to their maximum. Not only use Murlocs to buff other Murlocs but cards such as Leokk to buff your flooded board, Misha to protect it or even keep charging your Bow with traps. Its important that you always trade efficiently (2/1 for a 3/2) or for protecting creatures that will turn into mayor threats on the upcoming turns. If you are not sure on how to play a turn just go face, you have two owls and 6 spells (+hero power) that give you direct damage, they will die. Rwlrwlrwl!
Match-ups and Mulligans
Druid
Go full aggro here and let him do absolutely all of the trades. The amount of taunts he is able to play will determine if you win or loose. Wild growth may give you a great advantage as it allows you to build a board that you can buff next turn. Remember: Swipe on a Warleader does not kill buffed Tidehunters. Never underestimate Owls in this match-up and always keep in mind that a simple explosive may save you from the 14 damage combo!
No coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter (If you get solid 1 and 2 drops keep an owl as he is surely going to drop at least 1 taunt).
Coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter, Animal Companion (If you have a 1 or 2 drop already), Warleader (Only if you have Tidecaller in order to do the 1 mana 4/3 combo: Turn 1 Tidecaller, turn 2 coin Warleader), Owl (same as above)
Mage
Here you will have to do some early trades. Cards you may have to kill in order to protect your murlocs (always trading efficiently): Sorcerer's Apprentice (use any 2/1 Leper gnome, bluegill or Tidehunter), Mana Wyrm (When it stands at 1 attack its easy to kill with Knife juggler or a Tidecaller that has been buffed by a Tidehunter (3/2) or Warleader (4/3) or Eaglehorn Bow, whatever you use to kill this card has to live if you cant achieve this just let it die to an explosive trap + unleash or make him trade it to bigger threats. FLAMEWAKERS MUST DIE if the mage still has more than 15 health when dropping this card and you have a board you want to keep, kill it. Use a Kill Command or trap and bow or a buffed murloc almost every murloc buffed by Warleader can kill this.
No Coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter (maybe bluegill if you suspect Sorcerers Apprentice is going to be played) Don' be scared to drop Tidehunter due to his hero power as the 1/1 will always live and you can buff it later.
Coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter, Animal Companion (If you have a 1 or 2 drop already), Warleader (Only if you have Tidecaller in order to do the 1 mana 4/3 combo: Turn 1 Tidecaller, turn 2 coin Warleader), Bow (as long as you have cards to play it on curve).
Hunter
Generally an easy matchup as face hunters wont trade and you will win the damage race and midrange hunters have very slow drops such as Highmane and Boom and you will be able to do your rwlmagic.
No coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter (maybe bluegill if you suspect Knife Juggler is going to be played).
Coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter, Animal Companion (If you have a 1 or 2 drop already), Warleader (Only if you have Tidecaller in order to do the 1 mana 4/3 combo: Turn 1 Tidecaller, turn 2 coin Warleader). Quickshot can also be saved as the first Knife Juggler HAS TO DIE.
Warrior
By far our hardest match-up. I usually only kill armorsmiths and sometimes acolytes if I have Bow or a 3 attack drop with more than 1 HP. Animal companion can help a lot in this match-up to protect murlocs from weapon attacks. TIP: If you have 1 health Murlocs and drop Warleader (wich makes them 2 health) and the warrior kills Warleader with Deaths Bite the whirlwhind deathrattle wont will the 1 health Murlocs even though the Warleader dies.
No coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter (He cant weapon both of them at once letting you keep some board)
Quickshot or Owl can be saved to deal with Armorsmiths or Acolytes.
(Don't be afraid to use explosives vs Grim Patrons unless there is a Warsong Commander on board and try to ALWAYS get your Bow charged when tramps proc vs Warriors YOU NEED THE DAMAGE)
Priest
If he gets a good start it may be an incredibly difficult match-up, if he does nothing by turn 2 you will probably have won the game already (unless he deathlords, you will want to owl those). As for turn 1 Northshire Cleric do the same as with Mana Wyrm (Kill with Knife juggler or a Tidecaller that has been buffed by a Tidehunter (3/2) or Warleader (4/3) or Eaglehorn Bow, whatever you use to kill this card has to live)
Once you go past this point face is almost always the place unless you can trade things such as 1/1 Murloc Scout that has Warleader buff (3/2) with an Injured Blademaster stabilization will be difficult If his hero power is his only source of healing.
No coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter (Not so good here without Warleader or Animal Companion followup).
Bow may also be saved when decent curve for Northshires or Chows.
Warlock
Very easy match-up you are faster than zoo and have AoE clears and 2 owls for taunted eggs or any other high health Argused creatures and you have a lot of damage for a handlock or malylock to stabilize as well as many damage spells and your hero power to bypass those late taunts and kill him directly before Jaraxxus. Early Hellfires, Healbots, Coils, Bombs and double taunted Ancient Watchers hurt like against any other aggro deck but still winnable against any of those plays with a good use of owls and spells.
No coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter (If you get solid 1 and 2 drops consider keeping an owl).
Coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter, Animal Companion (If you have a 1 or 2 drop already), Warleader (Only if you have Tidecaller in order to do the 1 mana 4/3 combo: Turn 1 Tidecaller, turn 2 coin Warleader), Owl (same as above).
Shaman
Pretty good match-up as an aggressive hunter. This the match-up against which I find myself doing the most amount of trading but you can also get an incredible value from Scientists, Owls and even Quickshots may be used to clear early threats as their recovery is harder that yours due to their lack of AoE and the amount of drawbacks.
By no means you should do ineffective trades if you feel you are going to miss some considerable damage by trading better deal it to face. Unleash can also be a great asset in order to drop his board to 2 HP and let a trap do the rest or deal with those annoying anny-o-trons.
No coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter (If you get VERY solid 1 and 2 drops consider keeping an owl).
Bow or Quickshot can also do fine here if 1 and 2 solid drops.
Paladin
I love this match-up as you most certainly are going to get value from Unleash and Explosives getting a great advantage. Against aggro Scientists are the key against more control versions Bows and Owls do awesome. You can consider hero powering less against more aggressive versions to reduce the Divine Favor value even more. Consecration is a threat but you can play around it by not playing cards such as Tidehunter on turn 3, don't be too scared of it its bad but by no means game-loosing.
No coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter (If you get VERY solid 1 and 2 drops consider keeping an owl does good against both types of pally - Aggro: Divine shields and Blessing of Kings - Control: Shredders, Belchers, Tyrion, etc...)
Bow does much better agains control but not horrible against aggro. Also consider keeping Unleash if solid 1 and 2 drops.
Rogue
Don’t let Backstabs and Fan of Knifes demoralize you. YOU CAN WIN. Just keep up the damage they take longer than you to be able to play their burst and a simple explosive can stop that Oiled Southsea and the best thing against Rogues is that they almost NEVER TAUNT therefore without their heals they cant stabilize and even with them you can make them have a bad time as they have slow turns such as Prep Sprint which allows your Murlocs to charge up and deal enough damage to make it to late for him to recover. If you feel threatened by Oil burst consider doing some sporadic trading but not much as even though they seem dead they play Healbots and Earthrings. (Kill Command on Violet Teacher may be a thing, even though it increases Unleash and trap value).
No coin: Tidecaller, Leper gnome, Mad Scientist, Knife Juggler, Tidehunter (Owls are not very useful in this match-up don't keep them and feel free to use them on Shredders, Oiled creatures and even Thalnos to deny draw).
Warleader may be awesome in order to save Tidehunters from Fan of Knifes.
Any suggestion on a Leeroy replacement? This close to a new expansion I don't want to craft him (not that I have the dust). Would you suggest another murloc, maybe Puddlestomper or Coldlight?
arcane golem is a solid replacement.
I notice you didnt face any zoo in the videos and one of my most recent losses was to zoo. any insight into this matchup?
if you made a guide for this or even just mulligans it would be awesome, because this deck has taken me the farthest this season but im stuck around rank 11 and i know that i could go further if i was making less mistakes
i already went back and practiced and improved and went up more levels but some things that might be obvious to you i might be missing. i noticed that your mulligans sometimes vary and it's complicated whether or not you trade
is passing on blue gill related to wanting to have more surprise damage later in the game? or so you can possibly synergize it later?
what do you do vs patron warrior;
warriors are the bane of this deck sadly. all that armor.
id love to see what you come up with, with mage and echo of mediv and/or duplictes and secrets. i tried it, but it wasnt this strong. broke into rank 8 for the first time, almost 5, 10-3 so far, lost to a face hunter. replaced leeroy with arcane golem as i didnt have him. Replaced animal companion with wolf rider.
I added them back in. Stuck at rank 5.
Loved how the videos put everything into perspective. Fun deck thank you for sharing and congrats!
Great to see Murloc, and more interestingly, in a Hunter deck.
i love playing non meta decks, do u have your win rates?
edit: also whats the mulligan
I love how you missed lethal like twice in that shaman game and you still won lol. I never thought of Murloc's being able to last into the mid game, but you piloted it well. Swagalicious (the guy who played Agrodin to rank 1 legend last season) played Murlock (warlock murlock) to legend this season. I can pm you his battle tag if you want to talk to him about the deck or something....
No he's NA sorry. But you could always just make an NA account.
I never thought Murlocs could reach legend.
But they did.
i think there's been at least one murlock shaman deck and maybe a warlock
Early in hearthstone murlock zoo warlock was all the rage getting to legend.
