The quest for a quality dragon paladin deck begins! This midrange-style Paladin dragon deck holds its own vs. aggro and has the mid-to-late game to go toe-to-toe with many control decks.
Mulligan Strategy:
- Aggressively mulligan for Clockwork Gnome and Shielded Minibot. Always.
- With coin: If you have either of the two above - keep Coghammer. If you can also land a Blackwing Technician, even better!
Dragon Core (6 dragons and 2 activators):
- 1x Blackwing Technician: With six dragons, this provides a beefy early drop.
- 2x Dragonkin Sorcerer: Switched this in to provide a more consistent threat. With Blessing of Wisdom, and now Clockwork Gnome's spare parts, this is a threat that is ready to rise.
- 2x Dragon Consort: The meat of the deck. Turns Paladin into a ramp deck.
- 1x Blackwing Corruptor: Mini fire elemental - great for tempo change.
- 1x Chromaggus: Big body. Big effect. If he sticks. Works wonders when you can combo with Blessing of Wisdom. Creates some fun.
- 1x Ysera: Instant threat. Even better if out early via Consort. Those Emerald Drakes will start to rack up.
Cards Tested, To Consider:
Abusive Sergeant - Good for trading up.
Faerie Dragon - Fun early minion for more dragon power.
Hungry Dragon - Great body, with a small liability. Was running with some success, combined with Coghammer's boost.
Defender of Argus - Pulled due to Coghammer's influence. Would need if you went without this weapon.
Muster for Battle/Quartermaster - If considering Muster, you have to add one Quartermaster for the potential boost. Then things get sticky with the 5-spot.
Sludge Belcher - If you're having trouble with aggro.
Loatheb - If the Healbot isn't needed for your meta, throw in this game saver.
Avenging Wrath - Fun to combo with Equality, but chances for this board wipe are rare. Good for reach - remove Windrunner if you want it.
Sylvanas Windrunner - A great sub for Toshley if you don't have him.
Lay on Hands - Was too slow for me - put in Blessing/Healbot in its place.
Revision History (The Story of the Deck):
EDIT 5: Decided to try out the Dragonkin Sorcerer, switching out Hungry Dragons, and then the Faerie Dragons for Clockwork gnomes, which synergize well with Dragonkin. Added a Pyro for Equality board clears and the combo with spare parts.
EDIT 4: Brought in Chromaggus for some more dragon threats (eight total here). DoA was replaced, since Coghammer is providing some taunts for us already. Still enjoying Coghammer more than Muster, mainly due to the fact that Volcanic Drake has very little presence and Vigil messes up tempo more times than it should. Removed Lay on Hands (too slow for this deck) to try some earlier heals with Antique Healbot, utilizing Blessing of Wisdom for more precise card draw. Wisdom/Chromaggus combo is pretty sweet too.
EDIT 3: The Coghammer test. Continuing to adjust. The deck needed a push. With Vigil being too situational, I dropped it and then realized that I could try to make the deck more aggressive with Faerie Dragons and Abusive Sergeants. The Faerie Dragons help with the situational dragon cards and give you some good tempo. Then with the addition of Coghammers to make the minions sticky, the deck began to move a bit faster. Still testing, but having more fun with a faster play style. Added Sylvanas to give some opponents pause. This spot may still be better served as a dragon - such as Chromaggus.
EDIT 2: Pulled back on the Volcanic Drake. A little too situational and an easy removal with only 4 health. Brought in some Belchers to put a halt on aggro decks. The addition of Lay is there for more survival, though it may be too slow for my playstyle. Quartermaster is still situational. Card draw is still superior with the inclusion of Vigil, but I may drop this for some early game like Knife Juggler or Abusive.
EDIT 1: My initial deck was a little too slow for the current meta. Switched back to Muster to help with that. This combos well with Vigil and Volcanic. Still trying to figure out if Hungry Dragon is a better play than Azure Drake (need dragons to make the deck work). Added Windrunner and Loatheb to try and give the deck more legs.
Author Note: Arendain is a casual player, typically finishing in the top 10% of Ranked play, but never legend due to time constraints. Been playing for over a year - highest rank of 4 in the Ramp Druid glory days.
Good luck all!
I think it wouldn't be too bad of an idea to cut one Coghammer in favor of something else, especially since you're running two Blessing of Wisdom. Perhaps Boom? I would also change out at least one Faerie Dragon for an Azure Drake because you already have a decent amount of early game with added coghammer synergy.
I've been testing Coghammer as my main pillar in this deck. Winding up and popping this onto a hungry dragon, or any other big minion, wins games. I am still on the fence with the Faerie Dragon, though it does allow the deck to get out ahead of the pack faster than some midrange decks. I'm playing between it and Zombie still - the drawback to late game healing the opponent vs. a dragon in-hand has put me on the side of the dragon. I did enjoy Azure and the 3-damage consecrate (the card draw goes without saying), but it was a rare occurrence. The Blessing of Wisdoms have been a blast - even popping one on an enemy minion has given them pause and allowed me to secure tempo again. They are the main card draw - but again, still testing this out over Lay on Hands, which was too slow for me at the time. I appreciate the look into this deck and your thoughts! I'm going to continue to keep this deck and its options fluid, so check back to see how it evolves.
