Bolvar is the only target which gains bonus attack, not the hero. (Source)
Obtaining Bolvar directly from a player's hand, through a spell like Mind Vision, results in the clone being 1/7 even if the originating Bolvar is buffed. (Source)
Card Text
Whenever a friendly minion dies while this is in your hand, gain +1 Attack.

Spoiler alert: Bolvar gets melted and then sits on an ice throne and everyone forgets about him.
Doesn't it make more sense for Bolvar to be a priest card? He isn't a paladin, just a warrior. And he was Anduin's mentor while his father was missing... It certainly makes a lot more sense than Vol'jin ffs.

To "really" match the "legendary" he should have at least 1/12 for 5 or give +2 ATK per minion. Otherwise it is somewhat situational and really not worth a 5 drop. I will be surprised too if he sees any use.
IF this card got silenced, it will be the worst legendary in the game. If not silenced, then, it can almost be a game winning card for a control deck. Although I agree that I wanna see more impact for a class-legendary card. In my opinion, it's too easy to deal with and becomes a stupid card once dealt.
I don't see this in aggro at all, because aggro has lesser target for silence and I will never wanna run this out on turn 5, probably turn 10 or more and combo with other stuff, ideally Loatheb, but I wouldn't wanna keep Loatheb until turn 10 just for this card.
The saddest thing about this expansion is that now all classes except Paladin have hard removal spell or something similar like destroy target or return it to deck, the best thing we have is equality and divine shield spells, which requires board presence or combo.
this is among the weakest legendaries in the game imo. other legendaries get silenced and still have a decent body on board. i would make it a 2/6 so at least you have something useful for board control after the silence. i guess it can be used to bait out silence before you drop your tyrion . . . or play it as a 2-3 attack so they won't bother to silence. it's not going in my deck.
I am dissapointed... The only good thing about this card is the 7 health. It is legendary you can only have 1 in your deck... it can be silenced, it can get destroyed by many things mostly spells ... you can control the attack value but that forces you to play it let's say when it has 4 attack against a priest you have to play this or it will get buffed further and die to Shadow Word: Death. Usually you want this to be a 5 mana boulderfist ogre to dodge BGH. In the case you fight decks that are not likely to run BGH you can afford to play it with 7+ attack.
I'm really not crazy about this "buffing card in hand" thing. Sure, spell power would buf a card in hand for play but you knew it was happening when your opponent did it and you could respond accordingly before the buffed cards were played. But here, you suddenly can't kill a single enemy minion without worrying that this buff is happening unbeknownst to you, and you can't counter it until its played and potentially caused damage.
And to be clear, I'm not talking about this card specifically so much as the mechanic its introducing to the game.
It's already in the game. Twilight Drake has the same 'buffing card in hand' mechanics. The difference is that Bolvar can get almost infinite and buffs attack power, and Twilight Drake buffs health and can be more predicted. Anyway, you can deal with Bolvar in many ways, including all the usual removals (hex, polymorph, syphon soul, shadow word, BGH, etc..) and can silence it, transforming it into a 1/7 body for 5 mana cost. It doesn't have charge and doesn't do anything at the end of the turn, so you can counter before it do any damage.. Much easier to counter than the new Hunter legendary, which avoid BGH until gets damage, has 9 health, isn't situational and don't depends of an weak and slow hero power to increase its power.
I could see some use for this guy in a deathrattle deck. For 3 mana you get Harvest Golem, that would potencially give him 2 damage for 1 minion and with the new Scarlet Purifier it could be fun to run some Nerubian Egg for not only boosting your table but also this guy. Another thing is that if it gets silenced, 7 hp for turn 5 is still pretty strong (actually pretty strong further on) and paladin has many boosting spells which could make this guy scary again and again and again.
Yet, i still think it´s not that impressive, and he still loses over Tyrion, considering that, thought the second costs more mana, he has a more balanced and strong body overall and can still get boosted after a silence and do much more damage.
Personally, i wouldn´t spend 1600 dust on this guy, but wouldn´t delete him to get dust neither.
This card feels a bit like a toned down Earth Elemental. It's more easily dealt with than the Earth ele, but it doesn't have the overload (ofc). In both cases you completely lose the tempo when they are dealt with. This is why Earth Elemental is considered a fun, but poor card. Paladin, even more than Shaman, cannot afford to lose tempo too often because their win condition is board control. I will be surprised if Bolvar sees any use.
This was before the expansion thus you clearly haven't played with this card, so this is forgivable.

Bolvar was a paladin: http://www.wowwiki.com/Bolvar_Fordragon
Hm... never saw him use any paladin abilities when he fought Onyxia in the throne room or at the Wrathgate... weird...

In the average game, at worst, it's a Boulderfist Ogre for 1 Mana less, but is vulnerable to silence. Not great, but not completely terrible.
Hold it for another two turns, and you have a 10/7 for 5 that's a silence magnet.
And if you hold onto it until your opponent is out of silences? Well, it's not a OTK, but it could easily be a game winning card.
i feel like this card needs an "immune to silence" text on it and it would become really strong
additional text should read, "or, pay one extra mana, skip all that crap, get an ogre."

Yes.

Great card. If it had taunt wow...
Lots of great ways to use this and honestly.. 5 mana????? this is sooo good. Glad i have golden pally... hes coming out of retirement.
They should have given it taunt.

decent and not overpowered
