This has the potential to be pretty degenerate. Counterspell can stop spells from removing it. Explosive Runes can stop rush minions from removing it. Oasis Ally also stops rush minions (kind of) by buffing Orion before he can take the attack. 7 attack rushers are hard to come by. Ice Barrier is the only secret in standard that doesn't somehow protect Orion, so each time there's a 66% chance he puts up more protection. This is like Blademaster Okani but if your opponent guesses wrong they have to keep guessing and the minion gets harder and harder to remove.
If something like Ancient Mysteries was in standard this guy would be pretty scary. As it stands this requires you to either skip turn 3 or be a turn 7 play and requires some bad cards in your deck, so we'll see. Leaning towards no, but we'll see what they print. It feels like I don't really want to be in the timeline where he's good.
Isn't this card crazy in secret mage in the Wild format?
If Secret Mage was good anymore, maybe. Other far more broken decks have appeared and held its head underwater and I don't think this card will be saving it.
I prefer my Reno Mage deck to destroy any secret deck!
It will be so easy to kill this before anything happens most of the time. This wouldn't even be good as a 2-of, so I can't imagine why they felt the need to make it legendary. I guess if the opponent has no minions in play, it will be a lot harder to figure out how to clear this, but that's a very specific setup you'll need.
I mean, maybe if we had one minion more with secret synergy in mage, and an additional secret... But this, although is cool AF, seems only to be support for Wild format.
Wonder if you can predict and 'chain' secrets
Pretty sure the secret he casts is random, and thus unpredictable.
The dream is you have a bunch of secrets already set up to defend him like Counter Spell, Spellbender, etc. and that he cycles into those secrets to keep himself alive. Realistically, this is never going to happen. At best, you'll play him on a board with Counter Spell which will protect him once and get you a random secret
Pros: the artwork is good
Cons: no ways to cheat secrets in mage, they're bad overall, can't protect orion except for counterspell (which, by the previous point, you can't cheat, so you have to play it full cost in a meta where you can drop all the stats you want early), which makes it slightly weak to trades without consequences, plus no archetypes to put it into
This set feels really wild format centric.
rly rly good with Splitting Image
Going by the wording, he would split, become a 5/5, and replace the secret before getting hit.
I'm not sure the second copy would trigger its effect or not.
its a pile of stats, sure it has growth, but its still just a pile of stats.
Read the card again.
okay.
its a stat stick
For Standart: I have little faith that this is that good, mostly getting knocked down before any Secrets get triggered
The wording on this card doesn't make sense. Does it play a random mage secret or one from your hand or deck? It's probably a random one, but if that's the case, shouldn't it read "When a secret is revealed, cast another RANDOM mage secret and gain +2+2"?
I think its random but it doesn't say random, my initial thought was cast a Secret from hand but it doesn't specify that, it also doesn't specify from deck. The only give away is the fact that it says "Cast a different Mage Secret" which kind of means random.
The word "another" in your suggestion would imply the first secret (the one that got triggered) was also a random one.
As for the source of the secret, it is random unless stated otherwise.
