TechPulse Hearthstone Developer Interview With Ben Lee & Nathan Lyons-Smith

Tech and gaming-related website TechPulse just published a Hearthstone interview with two Hearthstone developers alongside their card reveal. Let's take a look at some interesting parts.

First of all, we need to mention that Ben Lee is no longer on the Hearthstone team but remains at Blizzard working on an unannounced project and Nathan Lyons-Smith is now the new Game Director.

Now, let's take a look a the summary of the article:

Gameplay

  • Naga minions from older sets will be updated with the new Tribe.
  • Naga tribe will be supported in the future expansions as well (they want them to be like Elementals or Dragons).
  • Spell schools and minion tribes are something you can build your deck around and we should see even more of that in the future.
  • The Coin being a spell is something they don't want to change in the future.
  • There will be more totems in the future.

Meta

  • With rotation, core set changes, and a new expansion, they expect a huge meta shakeup.

Expansions

  • Voyage to the Sunken City is apparently the simplest expansion of the year.
  • We're expected to see some new, more experimental card types later this year.
  • They compare Voyage to the Sunken City to Un'Goro and they think those expansions have a quite simple theme to create content for.

The first expansion is very Hearthstone with some inspiration from Nazjatar and the second one will be heavily influenced by something from World of Warcraft.

The third expansion is more based in general Warcraft history and goes beyond WoW to be a broader, larger part of the Warcraft license.
