TechPulse Hearthstone Developer Interview With Ben Lee & Nathan Lyons-Smith
Tech and gaming-related website TechPulse just published a Hearthstone interview with two Hearthstone developers alongside their card reveal. Let's take a look at some interesting parts.
First of all, we need to mention that Ben Lee is no longer on the Hearthstone team but remains at Blizzard working on an unannounced project and Nathan Lyons-Smith is now the new Game Director.
Now, let's take a look a the summary of the article:
Gameplay
- Naga minions from older sets will be updated with the new Tribe.
- Naga tribe will be supported in the future expansions as well (they want them to be like Elementals or Dragons).
- Spell schools and minion tribes are something you can build your deck around and we should see even more of that in the future.
- The Coin being a spell is something they don't want to change in the future.
- There will be more totems in the future.
Meta
- With rotation, core set changes, and a new expansion, they expect a huge meta shakeup.
Expansions
- Voyage to the Sunken City is apparently the simplest expansion of the year.
- We're expected to see some new, more experimental card types later this year.
- They compare Voyage to the Sunken City to Un'Goro and they think those expansions have a quite simple theme to create content for.
The first expansion is very Hearthstone with some inspiration from Nazjatar and the second one will be heavily influenced by something from World of Warcraft.
The third expansion is more based in general Warcraft history and goes beyond WoW to be a broader, larger part of the Warcraft license.

what^ lOL clearly not many hearthstone experience to say that.
The coin being a spell is a big problem IMO
I just want Pandaria, Pandas and Monks.
the coin being a spell has always been an issue, at first it was just to compensate the second player but the fact it's a spell is an unbelievable advantage in some decks or situations like activate spellbased cards like flamewaker or to counter counterspell, the dumb thing is that can also can penalize the second player for not being able to use the coin with some cards like troggs or counterspell... , the coin being a spell is just dumb
I'm actually surprised there aren't neutral "spells" that are actually just consumable items. For instance, would be neat if you could add things to your deck like a Treasure Chest that opens when drawn, and has a chance to have some cool items like a health potion, mana potion, a scroll that does something neat, or something else that may or may not have a mana cost or some other cost. Or, forget the chest, let me add some tech consumables directly to my deck.
Consumables might be a great way to creatively add a sideboard mechanic, or cards that get shuffled into your deck when the game starts, and draws another card when drawn.
Why not have some legendary minions drop loot, ie, whichever player kills it is granted some kind of basic consumable item card, even if it is your own minion.
I really like the soul shards/agony/rifts, or cards that get shuffled into the deck in general, because it allows you to get some extreme value later at the cost of tempo now. I really thing Warlock needs some more cards like this that deal damage or something else cool when drawn. I can imagine a Seed of Corruption card that deals 1 damage to all enemies when drawn, for example. really plays well into the dot-nature of the classes.
Noone'd spend a coin for counterspell countering, its a claim to lose.
gimme me more beasts and demons and i will be fine with that
TOTEMS THAT’S WHAT WE NEED!
This sounds sarcastic but I'm 100% hyped for more totems.
Bring back "Air Totem"!
Would be a cool nod to print a new spell damage totem.

Can't wait!
Can't wait for the Lich King and Scourge expansion with the added "Undead" minion type. + Lich King hero skin for Paladin or Warrior or as the new Death Knight class.
Undead tag has been a long time coming
The Lich king and death knight hero cards are a thing of the past. But they brought back the old gods so maybe another one with him.
MOOOOOORE…TOOOOTEMS……
Totems in BG confirmed now?! :D
