Battlegrounds Cosmetics & Features - Developer Interview By Ninaisnoob!
Today we've got the last part of the content made for the mini-set reveal schedule, but this one is a little bit different since it focuses on Battlegrounds instead of the actual mini-set. Let's look at what the Hearthstone developers have to say.
New Skins & Bundles
All of these new cosmetics will be separated into multiple bundles:
Live with the Patch 22.4 - February 15
- Jade Gardens Board
Live On February 22
- Algalon Bartender (top middle)
- Celestial Hero Skins (in the middle)
- Cosmic Study Board (top left)
- Astral Impact Finisher (bottom right - looks like a scroll)
Bob is back with another way to add flair and personalization to the Tavern: Battlegrounds Finishers! Battlegrounds Finishers are animations that replace the default Attack animation whenever your Hero wins a round of combat.* Bob’s first Finisher, Astral Impact, is a two-stage Finisher. That means that it shows a special animation whenever your Hero wins a round and then an even bigger animation when you deal 15 or more damage to your enemy! Keep a look out for more cool Battlegrounds Finishers in the future.
* Battlegrounds Finishers are equipped globally, so any Hero you use will use your equipped Finisher whenever you win a round of combat. Both players will be able to see the winning player’s Finisher at the end of any round of combat.
Design Process Behind The Battlegrounds Cosmetics
The process of making a new set of cosmetics
- It takes around 9 weeks just to find the perfect narrative for a set of skins (what heroes, what's the theme, what heroes will be available in that period of time in BGs,...)
- After a theme has been selected, they start working on other cosmetics or ideas that the team come up with
- Then it takes around 2 weeks to visualize how the most important parts of the animation will look like
- At the end, they start working on the VFX effects and cooperate with the art team to deliver the best quality of a product, this takes around 3-6 weeks
- In the last week, the QA team looks at the final product and evaluates if it meets the quality conditions set by the company
- The whole process can take up to 6 months
- They started working on the Celestial set in late May 2021
An idea for an Old Gods' skins
- Apparently, It's really hard to create skins for some heroes - for example Old Gods, because they don't fit with a lot of themes
- This was an idea they had a while ago, but unfortunately scraped off this idea - a Y'Shaarj with a saddle on the globe of Azeroth and riding it across the stars
What's their dream board?
- Puppies! What did you expect? This might be only a matter of time before we get a board with puppies.
- Alicia would also love to create a theme park board in the future.
- Chadd would like to explore more of the outside of tavern stuff with space, Nebula, stars, but he's happy with the Cosmic Study board for now.
The Cosmic Study board
- The theme is that you're one of the citizens of Dalaran that saved Azeroth, you have the power behind you and you look to the stars and you see the heroes of Battlegrounds be part of the magic.
- This board is Celestalon's favorite set of skins.
- They wanted to make sure that these celestial skins will attract people of all kinds - players that don't know about the lore and easter eggs behind this board but will love the theme and the art and also for the people that do know some background stuff around these skins.
Random board selecting feature
- They're thinking about it, but so far we don't have that many boards available, hence we won't see that in a near future, but apparently, we're slowly getting there.
Animated Portraits
- They hear the feedback, they have been thinking about it, but nothing to announce right now
You would have a point if constructed wouldn't get 3 expansions, 3mini-expansions, reworks (ranked, core set, DH class etc) and a bunch of skins each year.
This is disgusting....they are giving BG SO MUCH ATTENTION...while the CORE of the game...ranked...HEARTHSTONE...is super boring....stressful...unbalanced...rigged...unfair....and yet....its STILL THE SAME.
dead bliz is focusing on the WRONG DIRECTION. they should make a mode where u can USE UR CARDS....in the decks you want..........NOT TO PLAY IN THE SAME NET DECK TIER 1 ABUSIVE, UNFAIR WILD-ANY PLACE -----------
I dont play anymore.......whats the point? I can make EXP to gain gold...JUST BY ROPPING AND PRESSING HERO POWER ARMOR with warrior....ALL DAY............so why streess it out?
lol..........making 150 gold daily...just by waiting and pressing a button....thats perfect for me!
Battlegrounds is currently the most popular game mode in Hearthstone so it makes sense from a business perspective to try and maximum the profitability of this game mode, especially since the core gameplay is free to play. But also marketing/revenue development is a different department from design and gameplay. Cosmetics don't take focus away from development of the game.
I do agree with you on wishing the basic game was more engaging and fulfilling and I really hope the amount of RNG gets toned down in the future.
I don't mind that it costs money, 'cause I don't buy anything than pass and HS packs, but what upsets me is the fact that it takes 9 bloody weeks to bring in cosmetics into the game - 9 weeks of ressources missing in developing content and balancing the HS I am paying for!
I really, really regret every single RL money I have invested in this game, because it turns more and more into a cringe cartoon game for millionaire's kids.
PLZ, Blizzard, come and take all that goof pat patrol puppy shit with you and give my my old HS back!
pretty sure hearthstone has always been goofy
The people who work on cosmetics are not the same people who work on new content and balance. Simple as that.
I know it's a internet tradition to shoot one's mouth off without having any idea of how the world actually works, but this comment really takes the cake.
Blizzard : Battlegrounds are completely free to play and enjoy for everyone.
Also Blizzards : Every single thing we introduce you will have to pay $$$.
I don't really mind . I understand they have to make profit and I will occasionaly buy something but sometimes it's just too much
Blizz please...
I play your games, especially Hearthstone & I want to show my support directly to this game, but come on...
~2 months ago i bought complete campaign pack for Starcraft II for 19,99 Euro, and now you're telling me, that you offering me cosmetics for battlegrounds for 24,99 Euro?
Quoting a classic - CoMe On MaN!
this is really cool, thanks blizz
You know, I am not a fan of this, but really it isn't even the monetization here (though that sucks to punish your player base who is FTP by not allowing for an in game currency to purchase some of these items). Its more just about how much they are charging. I mean I guess they have a good price point that people are willing to spend money, but I just can't see giving blizzard $10USD for a game board cosmetic when I can go to a few other game platforms and find decent games for that much if not less. Yeah it takes time and yes they look cool, but really it does nothing whatsoever and while I could justify $2-3 a board, $10 just seems way over priced.
But that is just my opinion. Again, they have been selling the hero skins for a while now and those must be making some money for prices to have stayed consistent, but man I cannot say I am going to be shelling out cash anytime soon.
Good way to monetize the mode. Its fair and a lot of people dont care but the ones that do will bring in money to develop the mode further.
This might be an unpopular opinion here but I honestly feel like game boards are a great and fair way to monetize the game. I always thought it was quite generous that they have remained completely free in regular Hearthstone even though it would have been an easy cash grab, so adding them to a game mode which is essentially f2p seems like a completely fair way to finally do this.
I think it is an unpopular opinion yes. Quite generous from Blizz seems pure madness to me. HS at the end is a game that costs more than 4 triple-A games per year if you want to have a decent collection, therefore I don't see anything strange if something is free. They are trying to monetize animations and they still have to address the surplus of coins in mercenaries, are they generous? They seem more of a bad guy to me.
I completely agree that collecting most of the cards is stupidly expensive but there's enough free dust and gold to collect per expansion to craft quite a few good decks for free. Now we even get Battlegrounds completely free and people get upset because they sell cosmetics to compensate? That just feels like complaining for the sake of complaining tbh.
It is not completely free. You have to purchase the pass in order to use the heroes. It seems already sufficient don't you think? You need 4 passes per year. In this game what you move you have Blizz behind asking for money.
You dont need the pass to play Battlegrounds. You can play Battlegrounds without it. You will only have a choice of two heros and will have to wait a bit to play the new ones. But it is possible to play the mode.
+ You can buy Perks with gold, which I'm doing past few months, as I get more than enough gold from Battlepass and I don't really care for packs.
You could also use Google Rewards to pay for the pass. Answer a fast survey each day and you will have enough to pay for the pass on your phone. I got tired on Battlegrounds and went back to constructed, but I didnt pay for the pass while I was playing BG's.
So, I have to say thank you to Chad. He is that genius that thought that it was a good idea to insert his hairs in BG in order to do the lethal. I will for sure pay to see again Chad's hair.
