Classic Format Live Today - The Hottest Decks To Start With
With Patch 20.0 the Classic Format will go live and we will all be able to journey back to 2014 and the glorious beginning of the game. You get a Golden Classic pack just for logging in after the patch goes live! To help with playing we put together a list of some of the best decks of that era!
Many of these decks have great guides, so be sure to open up the deck page and read for some insight into what makes Classic decks tick.
But, I hear you say, I dusted my Wild Collection, I have none of these cards, but I want to play: Don't worry, we put a deck at the very end that is made of just basic cards and still works.
Have fun out there!
Quote from BlizzardReady for some nostalgia? The Classic format invites players to craft decks and compete using Hearthstone’s original 240 cards as they were in 2014, the year that Hearthstone launched! When the patch lands on March 25, your entire collection of relevant Basic, Classic, and Hall of Fame cards will be mirrored and available for deck building in the Classic format—as they were in the 1.0.0.5832 patch of June 2014 (after we made a few important changes), with any and all balance changes since then reverted. Classic packs will now add to your Collection for the Classic format, as well as the Legacy set in Wild. The Classic format leaderboards will launch on March 30. Read our announcement of the Classic format to learn more.
We’re celebrating the launch of the Classic format by rewarding all players with one Golden Classic Card Pack just for logging in after the 20.0 patch has gone live!

was the exact launch time mentioned anywhere?
I think Firebat explains it well in this video (from 7 minutes):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DidBYNA10IA
I mean the games are less ‘crazy’ but strategy is better rewarded.
Y... You do realize everything is unnerfed... yeah?
"it looks boring", "everyone will get tired of it"
You know you people don't have to play the mode right?
soon my friend, soon.
And what is exciting for you then? Infinite value? Tons of random-generated cards? DH hero power? What?
Well, yes, actually.
RNG makes each game different and to me that's exciting. A priest copying a card in a rogue's deck that generates a card from another class and using it in a weird way that changes the game is interesting.
I guess to some people this is an unpopular opinion and matches need to be 100% scripted. To each his/her own.
Furthermore, I'm not trying to downplay the mode for the people that want to enjoy it, I'm just curious what is the biggest appeal and how long will it last.
Couldn't agree more.
The ability to play with cards outside of the ones in of your (arguably small) starting deck creates the perfect balance between consistency and inconsistency in a game of Hearthstone.
Matches tend to be similar, but they're never the same.
That's why Aggro and Combo decks often become problematic at a certain point in a card game's lifecycle. They become too consistent and, thus, too powerful.
If players like this, they're much better off playing something like chess.
Hearthstone can circumvent this typical problem by focusing more on card generation effects.
In addition, IMO, the game only really starts to become interesting when both players have 10 mana and a full hand of cards, because that's when serious choices start getting involved.
Not everyone will play the same 10-card hand the same way.
Whereas with Aggro and Combo decks, the right choices are often very obvious and, in many cases, too obvious to be healthy for the game.
I don't know about that. It feels wrong when I lose the game where I was winning just because of some random card from a different class than the opponent's swings the game. It feels not right. It feels that you have no control about the game. You now can't play around anything or everything. You just play what the game randomly offers you out of the card pool from all the classes. It feels like highrolling fiesta to me. If that's what you like, then ok. I guess to each his own, indeed.
P.s. Priest had its Thoughtsteal from the beginning, but that's was his identity. It was an exception. And it was Ok. Now it's everywhere and it becomes how the game is being played. You now have no choice. I mean, now you have it in the form of the Classic format. And it is great at least because of that. The choice.
I just can't see a lot of decks to be fun to play as some of the cards made them great are remained unnrefed.
Like the leeroy handlock. With a 5 mana leeroy you won't be able to pull off the combo. Also miracle rouge will be pretty much useless. Force of nature without charge makes the druid meh. Equality 3 mana? It won't be nostalgic at all.
Everyone will play zoo lock, mid/aggro hunter, control warrior perhaps.
I sure I won't put much effort into classic
in classic mode all cards are same as of 2014, equality will be 2, warsong will give charge and all the other cards changed till today
Really? I somehow missed that information. That might change my view on classic mode. Cheers!
Classic will be Classic JUST as it was back then, no changes to the cards. So Leeroy will be 4 mana and Force of Nature will spawn 3x Treants with Charge, etc. etc.
Our Database is not currently able to distinguish between Classic cards for the Classic set and Legacy cards that will go into wild.
That means that any card that was nerfed at some point should be nerfed in these deck lists in game, but not yet on our site.
We hope to have a solution for this at some point that does not require manual flagging, but this might have to depend on how Blizzard handles the cards on their own back end (which has the same problem right now, so we are not alone).
Will we be able to play with our core set cards, the ones which in the classic set, in classic?
If you mean the free Core set coming with Forged in the Barrens and the Year of the Gryphon, then no. Those cards are limited to Standard and Wild.
If you mean the Basic set that had a similar function back in Classic then yes, you will have that set to play with.
I've been going through the deep pit of the forums... Under the tournament section, there is a ton of weekly tournaments run by Mana Grind. I found those decks much more appealing then the decks posted here plus you can see the progression of the meta throughout the months as people were figuring out the game. It is really interesting! One week they had 7 of 9 classes in the top 16. (As I remember haha). Again these are tournament decks and the meta is a bit different from ladder but the format does have the chance to make a bigger splash then we all expect.
We shall see in a few hours...
HearthPwn -> HearthPwn Forums -> Hearthstone Events -> Tournaments -> Decklists -> Page 2 & 3
You can click Decklist to redirect you to the page.
That's a great find. Totally forgot that forum was even there.
In that warrior Wallet control seems that some legendaries are missing, I could add Harrison, Sylvanas... to make it more classic
As someone who didn't play when these were current, it's hard for me to see the appeal of playing this mode. None of these decks look very exciting.
I guess it will be a nostalgia trip for most, and maybe that's enough.
I'd be really interested to see the actual play rate of this mode during the first weeks and thereafter.
