BlizzCon 2015 Announced - Nov 6th and 7th, Golden Hearthstone Card Back
Eric Dodds on Blackrock Mountain
The guys at MetaBomb had a chance to discuss Blackrock Mountain with Hearthstone's Lead Designer, Eric Dodds. Check out our recap of the interview below, or if you'd like to read it in full, head on over to their article.
Quote from Eric Dodds
- Initially when deciding on Blackrock Mountain, the team threw up a bunch of ideas on a whiteboard.
- Blackrock Mountain is very different thematically when compared to Naxxramas and Goblins vs Gnomes.
- It fit in really well with the 10th World of Warcraft anniversary being themed around Molten Core (which is in BRM!).
- Dr. Boom is not on the nerf list.
- They only want to nerf cards when it's "really negatively impacting the game".
- The team has discussed Karazhan as an adventure, and he'd "be surprised if they didn't do it at all".
- Not all cards in new sets are going to be designed to fix issues in the current meta, but some will be related.
- Cards have two stages of creation:
- Design: Make a cool concept for a card, and make it awesome.
- Development: Balance the numbers. Playtest. Balance the numbers.
- No plans to redesign the Hunter Hero Power, nor are they talking about it.
- They are not working on a console version of Hearthstone, but they won't rule it out for the future.
- The phone version of Hearthstone has an updated tutorial to make sure new players understand the game.
- No current plans to change anything about how new players can get brought up to speed with their collections, but it's something they're talking about.
Perfectly balanced.
No nerf, never!
Interesting that he talked some but actually said little ... ?
cool!
They should actually release more Balanced cards so Doc is not our only option.
Right? He is like the definition of balance in the game.
Dr. Boom is fine, leave him alone! ;P
within the span of opening 3 packs I got him in gold and silver (my first ever GOLDEN) but getting him when he gets nerfed is good right ? full refund :)
Glad to here there is no plan to nerf Boom!
they have to. i got 3 :D
"No plans to nerf Dr. Boom"
Blizzard must be proud of the ocean they just created from all those salty tears.
A 1/2 draw a card for 2 negatively impacts games, but Dr. GG doesn't.
well guess BGH is here to stay so boom is 7 mana summon 2x 1/1 bombs that do 1-4 damage when they die, people seem happy with that value
"No plans to redesign the Hunter Hero Power, nor are they talking about it."
guess facehuntard is here to stay, In my opinion that has more of a negative impact on the game than miracle ever did :(
well they could restore her power back, no reason for Gnomish Inventor to be 1/1 now, but I guess it's gone with the wind.
However Undertaker got nerfed cause of this, turn 8 Undertaker, cast Dr Boom, now you have to deal with 4 minions, one 3/4, one 7/7 and 2 with deathrattle.
Troggzor! TROGGZOR!
Troggzor needs a toughness boost and he be just as good.
Simply wrong. Dr. Boom is PROVABLY the most OP card in the game because he just provides DISGUSTINGLY good power for mana, far more than is reasonable, with absolutely no drawback. Most legendaries do one of three things: 1) provide raw power for a low cost with a drawback that makes them a considerable loss if you lose them immediately (e.g The Beast, King Mukla, Millhouse Manastorm), provide powerful abilities at poor base stat/mana cost ratio, making them a net loss of tempo if they get silenced (e.g Tyrion Fordring, Mal'Ganis, Sylvanus Windrunnerr) or do something weird and random that can be extremely conditional, hard to trigger, or potentially aiding your opponent as much as you (e.g Blingtron 3000, Mimiron's Head, Lorewalker Cho). Dr. Boom fits NONE of these categories. He gives you a strong, cost-efficient body (7/7/7, the same as the baseline War Golem) and a powerful battlecry which is effectively ALWAYS useful and cannot be reasonably negated (to avoid the damage from the Boom Bots you'd have to silence them, which is a horrible waste of an ability). He has NO drawbacks at all and there's no reason that ANY deck that isn't aiming to win before turn 7 in every game shouldn't include him.
The problem then becomes the way Dr. Boom warps the rest of the game around him. Because EVERYONE and his dog runs Dr. Boom if they have him, everyone who can runs Big Game Hunter to at least minimally cost-efficiently remove him. This means that every OTHER 7+ power minion in the game is automatically at a disadvantage since almost every deck will be running BGH to control Dr. Boom, minions that are far WORSE affected by it than him (GBH doesn't COUNTER Dr. Boom, merely removes him, you still have to deal with the Boom Bots). This means Dr. Boom is indirectly responsible for the effective non-viability of cards like The Beast, Deathwing, Onyxia, Prophet Velen, Nozdormu, Mekgineer Thermaplugg, Mogor the Ogre, Mal'Ganis, Illidan Stormrage, Gruul, all the Giants... the list goes on and on. He's a meta-warper and needs to be nerfed so he's NOT an auto-include in almost every bloody deck in the game. The announcement that he's not even on the list is enough to make me give up on ever taking Hearthstone seriously, because the balance team obviously don't have a bloody clue.
Adding +1 to his mana cost is a nerf and would fix him fine. I would have no problem with this. If you'd rather think of that as a "rebalance" rather than a nerf then more power to you. But Blizzard have said they have no intention of doing so, and that is a problem.
Be careful, you are making too much sense and calling for a card to be balanced. The mouthbreathers on this site might become offended if you keep being logical!
>Don't think Dr.B is OP
>Hands down the best legendary in the game
