19.2.1 Patch Notes - Edwin & Boggspine Nerfs - Battleground Change
Blizzard just announced some balance changes to both Constructed and Battlegrounds. Read all about it below!
Quote from BlizzardWe’ve got a small balance patch with a few big changes planned for release this Friday, January 8!
Standard Balance Updates
Edwin VanCleef
- Old: [Costs 3] → New: [Costs 4]
- Dev Comment: The last few weeks have been the best Edwin has ever performed as an individual card (the highest win rate card in multiple Rogue archetypes). Alongside cards like Foxy Fraud and Shadowstep, the frequency of early 8/8 or 10/10 Edwin VanCleefs reached a point we are no longer comfortable with. We want to evaluate how the rest of Rogue's kit performs without this very powerful iteration of Edwin. Cards like Foxy Fraud, Swindle, and Prize Plunderer are important pieces for future expansions and card interactions, so we'll be keeping close tabs on how they perform with the influx of new cards and Edwin's nerf.
Boggspine Knuckles
- Old: 4 Attack → New: 3 Attack
- Dev Comment: We're lowering the attack on Boggspine Knuckles in order to cut into the fluidity of Evolve Shaman, increasing the required investment of playing a 5-mana weapon without a free Dread Corsair, and reduce the overall damage output the deck is capable of over multiple weapon charges. This change lowers the amount of explosive plays available to Evolve Shaman and should create an overall healthier meta.
Edwin VanCleef and Boggspine Knuckles will be eligible for a full dust refund for 2 weeks after the 19.2.1 patch goes live.
Battlegrounds Balance Update
Elistra the Immortal
- Old: 7 Attack, 7 Health → New: 4 Attack, 4 Health
Bug Fixes
- Fixed a bug where Infinite Toki’s Temporal Tavern would not function correctly with the New Recruit Darkmoon Prize.
- Fixed a bug where Ysera’s Dream Portal, when used with the New Recruit Darkmoon Prize, would not offer a Dragon when Bob’s Tavern is full.
Also sorry this didn't get into the notes but: Yes Edwin will still rotate later this year and yes we will be reverting the nerf (along with others) at that time.

We'll be looking at Wild more frequently throughout the year, setting some things up to help us do that better.

Any card release has the chance to shift Wild to some degree, the upcoming mini-set being no different. There's some good stuff!
blad these waste nerfs aren't enough. boggpsine needs to cost 7 mana cuzzy blud.
These random out of nowhere balance patches crippling cards that have been in the game for years are baffling. Yes, Van Cleef was too strong. It's always been too strong. Foxy Fraud put it over the top. Should have just Hall of Famed it instead a long time ago.
I thought the same until I saw that they'll revert the nerf to edwin when he gets moved to HoF in the next rotation, which is at the launch of the next expansion.. maybe he's still good enough for standard, but not as problematic and gets his old strength back when facing wild only
i have seen that hippo firefighter somewhere
are you a theorizer?
they just should have swapped edwin with shaku the collector
Also Battlegrounds are still "Elementals or Lose" since The majority of tribes have no way to deal with a board of elementals with 100+ in combined stats each. Glad they nerfed taunt though!
You have poison... Though I agree, that they can get out of hand at times, especially when Murlocs are not available. T2 minion buffed to oblivion (like 100/120 or whatever) is just wrong...
Jesus christ what crappy nerfs.
Boggspine's attack isn't the problem! 1 less attack will do nothing. This won't stop evolve shaman from vomiting out a board full of minions constantly. They needed to hit cards that enable it like Desert Hare and Pit Master.
It definitely will help due to the fact that Dread Corsair isn’t free on 5 anymore
instead it comes out the next turn with another board full of vomit. It only costs 4 mana between it and a desert hare to get 17 mana worth of minions.
Nerfs don't work that way homie. They don't intend to destroy a deck, but BALANCE IT instead. Damage IS the problem. With control classes, you can handle the board. But you can't handle the damage dealt to your face at the same time. I think 2 damage would be the proper change, but who knows. This means 8 damage less to the face in slow matchs, and 4 to 6 in regular matchs. That's huge in decks like this, since it gives you time for healing and catching up.
This change now means that you'll probably reach to Twisting Nether, to Reno, Soul Mirror... And the indirect nerf to Dread Corsair is also HUGE. 5 mana minions are pretty good. Sometimes that free 5 mana minion was game winning when they didn't had Desert Hare and Pit Master.
Some dude said that the card should cost 7 mana LOL. The fact that you don't like an archetype doesn't means it should remain unplayable. That's stupid.
Except Evolve shaman ISN'T balanced. I've played a few ranked rounds since the patch and guess what, there's no change in the number of evolve shamans!
Evolve shaman has the one of the two problem problems that caused Divine Favor to get hall of famed, it was allowing paladin to vomit out a board full of minions. While DF was also HoF'd since they didn't want all paladin archetypes to have a potential card draw that big.
The reason evolve shaman is broke right now is because of how much early game mass mana cheat the archetype has. Trust me, unless they print another Desert Hare or Mogu Fleshshaper, this archetype won't be around after rotation. Prevent 2 damage overall and preventing dread corsair and knuckle coming out the same turn barely had any impact.
I think the 7 mana thing was a joke ;)
Dude the nerf took place like 8 hours ago. Did you played 846 games for claiming such things? Lol
For Edwin, YES! I want Edwin unplayable.
hmm in that case this is just a temporary nerf until the next expansion, then HoF'd Edwin.
so uhh, should we still disenchant Edwin or not..? (since the HoF'd cards give you dust without disenchanting them)
Basically if you ever plan to DE the card, you should always DE when it gets nerfed. In the case of cards that are getting HoF'd, if you want golden cards for Wild, you should always DE the cards before they get HoF'd and then craft the golden ones so you get the refund for the golden cost, so the golden card is free and you get the base cost of the card as profit. In this case, Blizz is going to give you the buy cost of Edwin (1600) instead of the sell cost (400) if you do the transaction right now instead of waiting until HoF. That's the only thing that changes. So if you're going to craft a golden Edwin for Wild, you should DE your Edwin now and craft your Golden sometime before April.
alright that makes sense, thanks. I would want a golden Edwin for the wild. I already got a golden Edwin tho :D
and I think the most logical thing for me to do is DE the card for now and wait till they announce all HoF cards. Just in case they change their mind about Edwin. Since one can DE a nerfed card with "buy cost", it is basically a no loss deal anyway.
No more "Dodged another one" Memes for Edwin xD
Can we have Vanessa Vancleef already, pls?
