Revamping Progression & Rewards in Hearthstone
Blizzard announced a new Progression system. Read all the details below!
Quote from BlizzardYou’ll be able to access each of these pages by clicking on a new Journal icon that will replace the Quest Log on the main menu. The Progression & Rewards revamp detailed here will go live on November 12!
Achievements System
The new Achievements system tracks a diverse set of stats and in-game accomplishments, and there are a ton of them! There are achievements related to each class, your collection, ranked milestones, adventure content, Tavern Brawls, new modes such as Duels and Battlegrounds, and gameplay achievements that are tracked from match to match! In addition, you’ll be able to see exactly how many cards you have from each expansion in one place. New achievements will be added with every expansion, future game mode, and major update.
Here are just a few examples of Achievements you can expect to see:
- Encounter another player with the Mark of Hakkar card back.
- Finish in 1st place as Ragnaros the Firelord in Battlegrounds.
- Collect all Scholomance Academy Demon Hunter cards.
- Summon 1000 Murlocs.
- Win a game without summoning more than 1 minion.
Reward Track & Tavern Pass
The Reward Track is a map of rewards that can be earned during an expansion by gaining experience (XP) from completing Quests, completing select achievements, and playing the game in any mode. When a new expansion launches, all players will get a new Reward Track for that expansion. Complete all 50 levels on the Reward Track and you’ll get to choose from one of 10 all-new Hero Skins! Along the way, you’ll unlock a bevy of loot, including card packs from sets in Standard, Tavern Tickets that grant access to either Arena or Duels, the Madness at the Darkmoon Faire Card Back, an Epic card, two Legendary cards, and a ton of gold! You’ll receive 150 gold for every level you climb beyond level 50.
The Reward Track includes a free track for all players, and a paid track that can be unlocked by purchasing the Tavern Pass. Purchasing the Tavern Pass at any point during the expansion will immediately grant the Golden Silas Darkmoon Legendary card, a 10% XP Boost that lasts for the duration of the expansion, and all items up to your current level on the free track. As you progress with the Tavern Pass during the Madness at the Darkmoon Faire expansion you’ll earn additional XP Boost, the Annhylde Alternate Warrior Hero and Card Back, three Jaina Hero Skins, three Thrall Hero Skins, and one of Hearthstone’s first-ever collectible Cosmetic Coins!
Battlegrounds Perks will now be available as a standalone purchase, separate from the Tavern Pass.
Cosmetic Coins
Cosmetic Coins will have their own tab in the Collection Manager where you can set them as your favorite to use during games, much like Hero Skins and Card Backs. There are two Cosmetic Coins available in Madness at the Darkmoon Faire obtainable by the following means:
- Completing all 50 levels of the Reward Track with the Tavern Pass.
- Collecting 135 unique Madness at the Darkmoon Faire cards.
Collecting all 135 cards from the expansion may seem like a lot, but once the Darkmoon Faire Mini-Set launches in a few months, there will be 170 cards in the set, so getting that coin will become a lot easier! You can learn more about the Mini-Set and the rest of what you can expect from Year of the Phoenix Phase 3 in our Madness at the Darkmoon Faire announcement blog here.
Daily, Weekly, and Legendary Quest
The Quest system is also seeing a revamp, with Quests now awarding XP on the Reward Track. We’ve also added Weekly Quests! At the start of every week (Monday at 12:00 a.m. PT), you’ll be given 3 new Weekly Quests to complete, which are a little more difficult than your average Daily Quest. Like Daily Quests, you can reroll 1 Weekly Quest per day. While they now award XP, Daily Quests are functionally the same. We’re also pleased to share that Legendary Quests will no longer override your Daily Quests! Legendary Quests are a series of special event quest that cannot be rerolled.
XP values displayed in Quests above are not final. Please note that when the Progression revamp goes live, all Quests (with the exception of Starter, Returning Player, and Duels Legendary Quests) will reset, so be sure to complete any old Quest you have in your log by November 11!
Profile Page
We’ve reworked the in-game profile page as well. The profile page is a space we intend to expand on in the future as new content, features, and game modes come to Hearthstone. The page will display lifetime stats for your account, including:
- Current rank in both constructed Standard and Wild
- Current Battlegrounds Rating
- Current Duels Rating
- Total number of wins in Arena
- Class levels and number of wins per class
- Next card reward for classes under Level 60
- Progress towards Golden Portrait for classes at Level 60
We hope you’re as excited about the Progression & Rewards revamp as we are! It all happens on November 12. Be sure to check out our official announcement of Madness at the Darkmoon Faire, available for pre-purchase in-game and from Battle.net Shop!

I hope this is separate to gold rewards.
Kind of on the fence about pre-order.
they're removing gold rewards for this
I see they are as abstract as i would've expected. Where is the hard data? I want to be able to calculate how better or worse it is than previous sytem.
All this blog is pointless without the numbers.
I wonder if purchasing tavern pass will give you any kind of "other unique ingame currency" which you can you use to purchase the next tavern pass for free if you save enough of it.
...you know, like in eveery other battle pass in every other game.
U dont get the "unique" currency in Teamfight Tactics, so its not every other battle pass...
Hey, I see a lot of people saying this will actually reduce how many rewards we get, but I don't see a reason for that to be the case here? They said we would be getting the same amount of gold we get from daily quests, so can someone explain to me why this is supposedly "Worse"?
This is a complicated and emotionally charged topic. I enjoy HS myself, this is not a 'hatepost', but I actually really dislike this change.
The gaming industry is drastically shifting at the moment. Many companies enforce new subtile ways to make tons of money using micro transaction. If you look into investor reports from activision blizzard, but also EA you'll see that the entire industry is pushing towards mobile/micro transaction/milking/whalehunting. Activision started doing Lootboxes (Cardpacks) and Season Passes within the last years. The results were always the same. People get more stuff, but the items that they get are less important and random. This means: You get more stuff that you don't need. You pay more for less. You need to pay more to get the same. People will maybe downvote this because they don't want to hear it, so let me tell you this. Let's talk about this in 1-2 years, as a recap. You'll get what I mean and there will be no discussion because everyone that is invested in HS will understand the system. Just look at the CoD season pass - thats a great example. Its a very clever system created by addiction psychologist to maximize profit.
Several years ago I made a huge reddit posts about things that HS could improve on. By now, they implemented almost everything I posted, except the monetary system. I would prefer having much cheaper access to cards, while having much more cosmetics with higher pricing (see League of Legends).
TL;DR: If they actually make it easier for F2P players.. great. But I don't believe that, based on Activision Blizzards past business decisions and investor calls. I think the opposite will happen.
guess I was right, check out reddit :D
Hey, I see a lot of people saying this will actually reduce how many rewards we get, but I don't see a reason for that to be the case here? They said we would be getting the same amount of gold we get from daily quests, so can someone explain to me why this is supposedly "Worse"?
I get where you're coming from, but as you suspect, i also suspect that we only got a taste of the progression system. I feel like we'll get smaller rewards for the beginning of the progression each expansion and they keep getting better. For instance (i'm using the term "Tier" because it really looks like a battle pass) Tier 1-5 we could get 50-100 gold and for tier 20-30 it would be 150-300.) If anything, i think it's getting better as a whole, especially for new players. Not having to grind AS much but still grinding a fair bit for better rewards is a win/win for me. Although having to pay 2500 for a tavern pass to get the cool rewards in the progression system does kind of suck, personally i thought it could be reduced to 950 since that's usually how much in game currency a battle pass costs.
They say that the screenshots are not the exact final version, and that daily quests reward XP but are "functionally the same". Does the functionality refer to them simply refreshing every day, or does that mean they effectively award typical amounts of gold via the exp gains?
Other than that, the only "grind" option seems to be "You’ll receive 150 gold for every level you climb beyond level 50", which, depending on how long it takes to get there and beyond, might not even be that attractive. The tavern pass might be worth it at the end of an expansion, when you are done with the 50 levels and want to grind a bit faster, but again, it depends on how long it takes to level up with and without the bonus. If you buy the Tavern Pass at launch (for 2500 gold, isn't it?), you'd have to gain at least 17 extra levels to profit from it in the long run. If I start grinding levels after 2 out of 4 months, that's good. If I sit at level 46 the week before the next expansion launches, that's not so good.
I don't know, it's all a bit.. weird. Like, I don't know if some details were not mentioned, or are just not there to mention. I'll wait until the wole thing is released and I can take a closer look at it, like how much you can actually, realistically make per month etc. But with a limited/strongly delayed access to making gold, and 170 cards per expansion (with the last 35 probably costing 20$/2800g again), this is somewhat concerning.
Note for the crowd of usual suspects: The game has made a fair share of money through me before I switched to F2P. Neither am I "demanding everything for free", nor am I shaming anyone who has more money to spend than I do right now. I'm mostly fine with what I can get out of the game right now for the resources I put in. If that is about to become worse though, it would be a turn-off for me.
It's pretty simple. As a F2P player, if by playing near the same amount as before, my rewards are greatly diminished under their battle pass - I'm done with the game. Hope Activision's greed didn't get in the way.
So you want Blizzard to offer you rewards without you offering anything in return? It's pretty simple. Either spend more time in HS or get a job to buy packs. You're just as greedy as Activision.
cheaper packs -> people play more different decks -> more fun -> more player satisfaction/retention.
This can all be done with some price drops that wouldn't hurt them but would make people love them. But that's not how capitalism works unfortunately.
I'm a F2P casual player who used to spend money in the past. I have zero interest in arena, battlegrounds (haven't looked into duels yet), or climbing to a legendary spot. I like playing Casual and Ranked games and trying out different decks. I've been fine with the amount of gold received for amount of effort and time spent acquiring it up to this point. If they're gonna make it more difficult, then I'm not gonna bother sticking around.
Blizzard got very greedy with the game over the past 2-3 of years by adding all kinds of little things to squeeze out more money out of its players in order to avoid having them pay for everything with gold. I just don't feel like jumping through additional hoops in order to have to keep up with all this in a game that has been out for more than five years. The devs decided to wait until the game's user base started dropping before they started implementing more features.
Whelp, as expected HS copied MtGA and went with the even greedier battle pass route so I expect the rewards will consistently get lowered with every subsequent expansion just like with MtGA.
Finally a new skin for Rogue
"Battlegrounds Perks will now be available as a standalone purchase, separate from the Tavern Pass."
Why am I not surprised? Your guess how much Tavern Pass + Battleground perks will cost for one season? I'd guess $40.
this hero skins looks like shit ...
arent you a negative pos
