"They" is a valid and grammatically correct pronoun regardless of any other possible factor, whichever your opinions on biological sex and gender might be, and it doesn't even require you to look up the person in question.
There, solved that for both of you.
Even if you know a person's gendered pronoun, it's still *technically* grammatically correct to use "they" as an alternative, both are fine language-wise. Though some folks might have preferences, the neutral option is never flat-out wrong (it might be rude if the person in question does not like it, but that's another story).
Singular "they" has been used since the fourteenth century in instances where the gender is either unknown, irrelevant, or nonbinary. It being used less than gendered pronouns is undeniable, but claiming it wasn't used at all is just incorrect. It is not "the ideology now" or the "gender nightmare" lol
I don't hope to truly convince someone on the functioning of a quirk of our beloved English language on a bloody Hearthstone forum of all places, but confidently stating something that is just plain wrong (looking at you H1st0ry my dear) is just silly.
@Lilin No, its not. You might want to look up the difference between singular and plural.
I teach grammar. It's grammatically correct. You're not smart just because you didn't learn anything after middle school.
Fare thee well, ma'am. You will be missed.
Very nice words for the team. Good luck with everything coming!
Sad to see her go :(
Hope you get better Hadidjah!
Rather than all this pointless discussion of pronouns, I was expecting to see people speculating about that rather cryptic 'mental health' paragraph. Does this imply that she is going to a role that is less taxing on her mental health (whatever that means) and if so I wonder what particular aspect of her current job was damaging to her mental health (and why mention it if it isn't?)
another one bites the dust
Then why do you even care visiting HS-related sites?
"They"? Isn't it a single person?
Because they realized they had f-ed up when they removed 'he' and 'she' and were left with 'it'.
Didn't know gender most likely and went the safe route.
The singular "they" has existed as a generic neutral pronoun in the English language for centuries, so no it doesn't need to refer to more than one individual, and whether it does is readily apparent based on context.
WHO THE FRICK IS THAT GUY?>
These comments are why I lack faith in humanity
All these comments about pronouns and here I am just thinking "Aww man, they killed off one of my favorite characters before the next season of Hearthstone Teasers."
Wow, on one hand I looked to the comments expecting it to be a dumpster fire of reactionary idiocy and on the other I'm surprised by how prevalent it is...makes me really believe this is, in fact, a game for children and not overgrown man children like yours truly
1) Everyone quit getting your panties in a bunch about the they/them pronouns
2) Talented people change jobs all the time and talented people replace them, Hearthstone will be dead when Blizzard says it is not when a semi-notable personality leaves
