Edit: Added Blitzchung's reaction.
After a long week of discussion, Blizzard changed it's decision on the Blitzchung affair. Read everything Blizzard's President, J. Allen Brack, as well as the subject of the discipline, Grandmaster Blitzchung, had to say below:
Quote from BlizzardHello Blizzard Community . . .
I want to take a few minutes to talk to all of you about the Hearthstone Grandmasters tournament this past weekend. On Monday, we made the decision to take action against a player named blitzchung and two shoutcasters after the player shared his views on what’s happening in Hong Kong on our official broadcast channel.
At Blizzard, our vision is “to bring the world together through epic entertainment.” And we have core values that apply here: Think Globally; Lead Responsibly; and importantly, Every Voice Matters, encouraging everybody to share their point of view. The actions that we took over the weekend are causing people to question if we are still committed to these values. We absolutely are and I will explain.
Our esports programs are an expression of our vision and our values. Esports exist to create opportunities for players from around the world, from different cultures, and from different backgrounds, to come together to compete and share their passion for gaming. It is extremely important to us to protect these channels and the purpose they serve: to bring the world together through epic entertainment, celebrate our players, and build diverse and inclusive communities.
As to how those values apply in this case:
First, our official esports tournament broadcast was used as a platform for a winner of this event to share his views with the world.
We interview competitors who are at the top of their craft to share how they feel. We want to experience that moment with them. Hearing their excitement is a powerful way to bring us together.
Over the weekend, blitzchung used his segment to make a statement about the situation in Hong Kong—in violation of rules he acknowledged and understood, and this is why we took action.
Every Voice Matters, and we strongly encourage everyone in our community to share their viewpoints in the many places available to express themselves. However, the official broadcast needs to be about the tournament and to be a place where all are welcome. In support of that, we want to keep the official channels focused on the game.
Second, what is the role of shoutcasters for these broadcasts?
We hire shoutcasters to amplify the excitement of the game. They elevate the watchability and help the esports viewing experience stay focused on the tournament and our amazing players.Third, were our actions based on the content of the message?
Part of Thinking Globally, Leading Responsibly, and Every Voice Matters is recognizing that we have players and fans in almost every country in the world. Our goal is to help players connect in areas of commonality, like their passion for our games, and create a sense of shared community. The specific views expressed by blitzchung were NOT a factor in the decision we made. I want to be clear: our relationships in China had no influence on our decision.
We have these rules to keep the focus on the game and on the tournament to the benefit of a global audience, and that was the only consideration in the actions we took.
If this had been the opposing viewpoint delivered in the same divisive and deliberate way, we would have felt and acted the same.
OK, what could Blizzard have done better, and where do we go from here?
Over the past few days, many players, casters, esports fans, and employees have expressed concerns about how we determined the penalties. We’ve had a chance to pause, to listen to our community, and to reflect on what we could have done better. In hindsight, our process wasn’t adequate, and we reacted too quickly. We want to ensure that we maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all our players, and that our rules and processes are clear. All of this is in service of another important Blizzard value—Play Nice; Play Fair.
In the tournament itself blitzchung *played* fair. We now believe he should receive his prizing. We understand that for some this is not about the prize, and perhaps for others it is disrespectful to even discuss it. That is not our intention.
But playing fair also includes appropriate pre-and post-match conduct, especially when a player accepts recognition for winning in a broadcast. When we think about the suspension, six months for blitzchung is more appropriate, after which time he can compete in the Hearthstone pro circuit again if he so chooses. There is a consequence for taking the conversation away from the purpose of the event and disrupting or derailing the broadcast.
With regard to the casters, remember their purpose is to keep the event focused on the tournament. That didn’t happen here, and we are setting their suspension to six months as well.
Moving forward, we will continue to apply tournament rules to ensure our official broadcasts remain focused on the game and are not a platform for divisive social or political views.
One of our goals at Blizzard is to make sure that every player, everywhere in the world, regardless of political views, religious beliefs, race, gender, or any other consideration always feels safe and welcome both competing in and playing our games.
At Blizzard, we are always listening and finding ways to improve—it is part of our culture. Thank you for your patience with us as we continue to learn.
Sincerely,
J. Allen Brack
President of Blizzard Entertainment
Blitzchung's reaction to the adjustments made to Blizzard's decision, in full, from today:
Quote from BlitzchungThank you for your attention in the past one week, this is a personal statement and my view on Blizzard's latest decision. First of all, I'm grateful for Blizzard reconsidering their position about my ban. Earlier this week, I told media that I knew I might have penalty or consequence for my act, because I understand that my act could take the conversation away from the purpose of the event. In the future, I will be more careful on that and express my opinions or show my support to Hong Kong on my personal platforms.
Many people has been asking me if I accept the latest decision of Blizzard, I will discuss that on two parts. Tournament prizing and suspension. For tournament prizing, I quoted what Blizzard said on the official website, they mention that I played fair in the tournament and they believe I should receive my prizing. This is the part I really appreciate, Blizzard also said they understand for some this is not about the prize, but perhaps for others it is disrespectful to even discuss it. People from Blizzard had explained this to me through a phone call and I really appreciate that and I accept their decision on this part.
For second part about the suspension, Blizzard had changed their suspension on me from a year to six months. Once again, I appreciate for their reconsideration on this. To be honest, I think six months is still quite a lot to me. But I also being told that I can continue to compete in the hearthstone pro circuit which they mean the grandmaster tournament. I appreciate for this decision they made because grandmaster is currently the highest level tournament in competitive hearthstone. However, I wish Blizzard can reconsider about their penalty on the two casters involved.
Lastly, many people wants to know if i would be competing in hearthstone in the future. Honestly, I have no idea on that yet. Since my next tournament is very likely to be the grandmaster tournament of next season, it's probably at least a few months from now on. I will take this time to relax myself to decide if I am staying in competitive hearthstone scene or not.
Hearthstone changed my the way I live, I really love this community. Blessing to all the players out there, and blessing to Blizzard.
Ah, damn, I forgot one important thing, I hope you all can remind me.
Why usa is going to decide what another country do with their inside politics? Why you all think that you are the people who should do anything to choose the way other people live? Why do you think you are gods? You are not. Just go and live your boring life, you are nothing to decide anything on this topic. Even blizzard itself is nothing to decide anything. It is hongkong people, chinese government and nobody else.
And, if you are still thinking that you are the gods - try to search information about everything that happened during that conflict. You will realise that it is not just White and Black.
if no china influence in decion why did u banned hongkong free battlegtag?
Agree!
those rules are just made by them, and its still a nonsense punishment. that was the first action like this, and blizz just made an idiotic decision not warning the player.
They ruined that "play nice, play fair" thing.....
So a few years back. 2016 at Blizzcon to be exact. A certain winner of that tournament, Pavel to be exact. Made comments stating Victory for the C.I.S. In the post match interview. A clear and political statement giving Russia's very recent take over of Crimea at the time. Furthermore his opponent was from Ukraine. Further pushing the politically charged comment.
What did Blizzard do??? Nothing... so what's different? Oh yeah. China. Blizzard is lying and/or a hypocrite with their recent positioning and statements.
It's a shame, what they are doing. It is so obvious they think money first, and people second.
Hi Vanessaira5407 and welcome to the forums,
I watched the whole Blizzcon 2016 HS tournament and as far as I remember Pavel DO said such similar thing, but he meant the HS region by saying "CIS", not your political interpretation of the abbreviation.
I would like to re-watch the interview again, so if you (or anyone else) can gladly provide a link I would be happy to do it.
Regards,
Skelos
If your rules forbid me from saying "Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of our age", sorry sir, but stick them up in your ass. Rules are human made and it doesn't mean they are just.
If blitzchung said something like " Liberate Tanzania" nothing would have happened, we all know it. It's not about politics or any other shit, it's all about China's interests ( or any other country if Blizzard makes money in there )
So Blizzard, you and your rules can go to hell.
This is really stupid opinion. Liberate Tanzania has no meaning, that is why nothing would happend. So if he sad something racist for examle, would be also okey just because it is his right to FREE SPEECH. If u allow someone to give his polits or any other opinion at game event, then everybody can gives his opinion about everything.
It's certainly a step in the right direction. I also appreciate that the community acknowledges that, it shows that we encourage these actions, unlike what I expected to happen
Stupid statement. Some people's feeling of safety and being welcomed is dependent on other people fully accepting their insane believes or views. Be that communism or any other ridiculous idea, yet questioning them already creates an unsafe situation for, say... the Chinese government
That's why you shouldn't discuss politics in Internet games

"Cooled down greetings to my longtime favourite games-forge,
I am a German Blizzard fan for over 20 years now (still no good English - sorry °_°).
Since 1998 I played Starcraft and later was one of the influential mass and semi-pro gamers for WarCraft 3 (even 2on2 2nd National Team).
I did not play WoW much (need this 1on1 competetive style), but I liked Overwatch, loved StarCraft 2's epic story and playstyle (anyhow only master league with race random) and until now I paid at least 2000$ for Hearthstone with over 16k games done.
Blizzard was always an island for me.
A place of fantasy, competition, friendship and freedom.
A place like the real world should be in many ways.
It started to crush a bit, as Vivendi bought Blizzard.
There were many little steps, where the true root spirit was damaged in some ways sometimes.
But in the case Blitzchung there is a frontier, that cannot be stepped over.
It’s a chimera, that you think, that the problems of real live has not to affect the game.
We cant’t live and play in a spirit of freedom, when you act in this way.
Sure he had broken the rules… but for what reason?
Isn’t there a reason whey there are rules?
The meta reason is to guarantee a free and enjoyable enviroment.
Blitzchung protested against forces, that want to destroy this spirit of freedom and free speech and you Blizzard kill him for that like Grommash Hellscream tortured Mannoroth the Destructor.
That is simply wrong.
Blitzchung is no demon - he behaved like we all should at the turn of the tides.
Even now with the reduction of the penalty to “just” 6 (instead of 12) month and giving him his tournament money back, you showed no attitude to honor a brave heart who stands in for freedom of speech and a protest for human rights.
Right now in my country everything also collapses - I am a resistance fighter under an every day more totalitary system, which wants to control all German people by censorship, tax slavery, political correctness and pseudomoral laws (truely hypocrits everywhere) - destroying german industry and freedom (which was never given since Versaillies 1919) and primary killing the Spirit of ‘Schiller’ it seems as main goal with a lot of pure lies.
I cannot proceed even paying you for this behaviour - you as big company have a responsibility, when you remember your root spirit/goals.
If I as player and part of a great community accept/tolerate your behaviour, other companies will act as long arm of lobbyists/oligarchs too and think they can create just gamerzombies, who forget, what this world is all about and for what it is a passion and reasonable to fight.
Ask yourself if you love a community more, that withstands the torture of human rights or just being some ghuls without any vision to live and love for.
I expect a statemet of you at the latest to BlizzCon, that in regards to the great spirit of you community you “free” Blitzchung as a fighter for freedom, like we all should be.
Otherwise I will stop paying any more money for this company, which just seem to be a system w.h.o.r.e like so many others to money and power of politicians/lobbyists.
Your lobby are your gamers.
You spirit is (was?) freedom!
Act so!"
So, whats the right thing to do, instead of this statement?
Wipe the ban away, give him the prize money, apologize for how they acted.
And not litter the apology with blatant horseshit. That also helps.
Blizzard had to just give Blitzchung a warning about only discussing the game in post-game interviews and don't go any further. The prosecution and the backlash followed it showing that Blizzards know they fucked up hard and there's no way to get out of that situation clean.
So Blizzard did the best they could right now - lightening the punishment and pretending they did everything right while quickly rewriting the rules in a more sane way to ensure this will never happen again.
Yeah. Ok.
If he had expressed the “opposing viewpoint” he would have been a fascist, and nobody outside China would do anything but cheer when you threw him under the bus. It’s precisely this faux balance that is the problem.
I get what you're intending to say, but the way youre saying it is "If he had done the exact opposite thing, then the reaction would be the exact opposite! Hypocrisy!
Now to wait and see the reaction from China. The NBA fell all over itself and they still caught ridiculous crap from tencent and such. I have some time to see what happens, so I'll wait.
While the situation is horrible for Blizzard, don't read things into remarks that simply aren't there. How does excluding Hong Kong as a country imply there is a country without Blizzard players? If anything in the current situation might create a country without Blizzard players, it's counting Hong Kong as a country...
