Rise of Shadows Card Nerfs - What Do Pros Want To See Smacked?
IGN's Cam Shea got a chance to speak with a few of Hearthstone's pros at this past weekend's HCT World Championship and talked about card nerfs. Below you'll find our recap and you can read their thoughts it full here.
Card nerfs have been a very popular community topic post expansion launch, as they always are, though could it be different this time around? Here's what pros had to say about the Rise of Shadows set and any cards they think should get hit with the nerf bat.
- Ike thinks the meta hasn't fully progressed yet due to "sixteen of the best players ... [not] sharing anything"
- Justsaiyan says Dr. Boom, Mad Genius is a problem. Everyone is playing Warrior which means long games, he feels like not even playing mirrors. Boom is strong due to the DK rotation.
- Bunnyhoppor thinks Rogue is too strong. He also has this to say:
- Rogue opposition needs to have an answer for Waggle Pick or Raiding Party.
- Edwin VanCleef should be removed. He proposes moving Edwin to the Hall of Fame and making Preparation's effect a 2-cost reduction.
- Magic Carpet is not an issue right now but could be if Rogue gets nerfed.
- Possibly need to do something about Dr. Boom, Mad Genius because it might be healthy for player sentiment.
- Wants to see changes before Hearthstone Grandmasters begins as he doesn't want to see everyone only playing Rogue and Warrior.
- Hunterace thinks the biggest problem is EVIL Miscreant due to the Rogue pool being very strong. Bump the cost up to 4.
Proposed Nerf Targets
Some of these are conditionally, though they certainly echo community thoughts.
Your Thoughts
Are there any cards you think need to be hit with a nerf after these past few weeks of playing Rise of Shadows? Let us know down below.
Personally, I'm quite amazed Magic Carpet was even printed and will continue to quite enjoy the shenanigans in Zoolock while I still can. Increasing the cost seems like the most viable way to deal with it to keep the effect intact.
I also think that Augmented Elekk gives Warrior way too much power. Increasing its cost so it can remain a viable option for getting onto the field later in the game seems acceptable.
Preparation + Edwin shenanigans have always been in the game, I don't understand how can it suddenly be too strong. If you think it's too much with raiding party, make raiding party more expensive.
For me personally Edwin felt always broken since the beginning of HS. But in the past, he was less of a problem when BGH was 3 Mana...
Actually, I also remembered the bgh nerf and thought how funny it is that the classic cards it was good against like edwin or mountain giant are too oppressive now and are being called for a nerf, because not every class has an answer for them. If they just unnerfed bgh it would solve everyone's problem :P
Complain about Rogue having too much removal is like complain that Priest has too much healing. It's their entire class indentity is based on.
Yet none of the aforementioned cards are played anywhere near the percentage of Sap. Sap is a card that wins games single handed.
Can’t agree more, card seems overly unfair and very frustrating to play against. And guess what freaking 20 cards in their deck and they always happen to have it at the right time
Magic Carpet is bonkers. But I kind of hope they don't Nerf it. I've only just crafted the second one I needed for my Wild Mech Zoo with Hobgoblins and Junkbots..
Giving it less toughness or increasing it's cost would make it still playable but not as insane
What about Leeroy ? Pick + 2SS = a huge damage in the face in a single turn.
Leeroy could easily go to the hall of fame, he was nerfed already way back when it was only 4 mana to cast him
edwin is not a problem. raiding party is! preping raiding party and playing waggle pick and two dread corsair is the problem. raiding party should be 4 mana and waggle pick 3 attack.
combo is the identity of rogue. It's a downside, you need to play several cards to get the effects. Like warlock cards inflict damage or discard, and are more strong that way. 4mana combo draw 3 cards, that is destroying the class again? Rogues had cold blood nerfed recently, and had to adapt. Nerf the class again? It's one of the most hard classes to play, as warlock, and still, everyone complaints about these for the past years...
If it's so strong, play those decks, and see how it goes.
Always with the nerf this and that bs, ASK FOR BUFFS on the 200+ cards in your collection that are useless, don't turn the playable ones into trash!!!
If they nerf Dr Boom MG I’d likely quit. I don’t play basic control, I play dragon warrior but it’s a staple in there and it’s so fucking fun.
Warrior has always been my favorite class, but the fact is the hero power is such garbage which is why it’s always taken cards like Justicar and Baku to make it useful. As well as Finley back in the day. Every other hero power is just so much better. Druids can poke and finish off enemies for 1 less armor. Rogues get two turns of a weapon. Mages are great for poking. Even friggin shaman can make tokens to buff up for strategic advantage. Warrior gets two armor. Yeah priests isn’t great in many people’s minds but they can at least use it to good advantage early and mid game. As well as turn it into a damaging hero power with many different cards. Warrior can’t do anything. There’s some use with shield slam but that’s it. They won’t ever adjust it though and that’s understandable.
Dr. Boom is a staple in any Warrior and he is a problem in any of them. Rushing Mechs is insanely strong. Doesnt matter what I play (besides mech hunter), I instantly want to quit turn 7.
So yes, he is a problem!
How about no. That would be so god damn gross. If anything they could un nerf the giggling inventor now that the quest has rotated out into Wild though. That would help those of you who like the quest as well as help go against Aggro AND control on standard. Giggles slammed at 5 would help give folks time to counter turn 4 twin spell mountain giants for example.

How about bringing the rogue quest back in its original state in wild?
Brawl is every control warrior deck. Shield Slam is in every control warrior deck. AgGrO iS tHe PrObLeM
If they moved a classes classic legendary (ie. Edwin) to HoF does anyone know if they replace it with another legendary? Or that class just doesn’t have a classic legendary minion they can play in standard anymore?
(that seems shortsighted).
