Hearthstone Specialist - The New Competitive Format for 2019
A new format has been announced for Competitive Hearthstone! The Conquest Format is being replaced by Specialist this year, and brings a form of side-board Hearthstone.
Blizzard says they are excited to see how it performs and that they are eager to implement community feedback as needed. Here's how it works.
- Players bring three 30 card decks to bring to the tournament.
- All decks must be from the same class.
- The decks are designated as Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary.
- The Primary is your main deck that you are bringing to the tournament.
- The Secondary and Tertiary decks must have 25 cards found in the Primary deck, with the remaining 5 being your choice.
- For the first game, both players must use their Primary deck.
- In following games you are free to choose your Secondary or Tertiary decks, or continue using the Primary.
- Your opponent will not know which you choose.
The format begins post-world championship.
I see this as problematic but would like to make it clear why
1. This will likely be even less like ladder than tournaments already were, so players won't be able to relate
2. Even if there is more skill, which will take some time to determine, there is going to be the same matchup slightly modified three times in a row, where before you got many different matchups entirely. This will be boring.
3. Many classes are not flexible enough to be ran alone. At least before fringe decks that couldnt see play on ladder because they weren't general enough had a chance, due to bans and balance with your other decks
4. Matches will feel more coinflip-ish than they used to feel. A player matching against a class that counters theirs will basically just lose, watching the series will feel boring.
Sure there will be good series, but that would be the case with any matchup, I dont see enough good for this type of thinking
THIS IS TRASH FORMAT what a garbage idea
We'll see...
Exactly. So instead of actually having a format that promotes the 3 best classes as they do now they just promote the single best class. How the hell is that supposed to be better? You basically just ignored the other 8 classes and made watching the game even worse. They had an opportunity to bring in a format that made players play all the classes and totally ignored it. /facepalm
I think you don't see how side boarding opens a wide range of possibility for every class.
That's... not even a little bit how Hearthstone works. If everyone brought a single class/archetype, you bring a hard counter for it and win the tournament. Look at literally ANY other CCG - single-deck formats do NOT lead to massively lopsided metagames.
I really hope this is not the only new way to play hearthstone for 2019. As a casual player this is really boring to me and will not impact me at all. If they do not bring in a new format separate from standard and wild I will lose interest each expansion rather quickly.
Has nothing to do with you at all or the game you play. Has everything to do with tournament level play. You will be all good, killer.
I'm really looking forward this mod to be integrated as a new mod for ladder in Hearthstone. Hopefully it will be, cause otherwise, I don't know why they would hype us with this new competitive mod.
It won't be. This is for the 0.01% that plays this game competitively.
I think Tespa tried this format in 2017, it was a flop, but I have hope for it on the second go around
Oh...my fault. If that's the case, I apologize. Yeah, hopefully the second time around goes well. = )
You and me both :)
"...today we gonna share the biggest changes in 2019..."
ok guys, i will come back in 2020.
Cya
a change that affects the top tier 1-2% of the playerbase, yes this is what the casuals/streamers/average joe wants to hear! And funny enough a few days ago a HS (dean ayala i think) posted what will bring you back to HS !! Sometimes you wonder are these people living under a rock or are they actually trolls (pun intended)
You realise that they posted about this update last November, right ? Dean's tweet and feedback it received has nothing to do with this update.
You realize that they announce the rules for official tournaments EVERY YEAR around this time, right? This has literally nothing to do with Dean Ayala's post about bringing people back to Hearthstone. Use your brain just a little bit, please.
Amazing how no one has ever watched a match with this format (much less played it), yet somehow it's the best thing Blizzard has done or it's complete trash O_o
I think the people that are saying that this format is going to cause the tourney scene to be nothing but mirrors are missing the fact that all it takes is one counter to the prevailing strategy to blow up the "mirror meta"
Let's say that you, as a tournament participant, have the thought that everybody is going to bring hunter. Hunter is popular, and players can easily brew up three decks with different tech cards that perform slightly differently. So you assume that the player base for a tournament is going to just bring a bunch of it.
So you as the "big brain intellectual" bring priest because it beats almost all Hunter lists. Okay, you did it, you're beating the popular decks. BUT you probably aren't the only one thinking this way. So maybe, more people bring Priest.
And then, you have the "even bigger brained intellectual" that says, well if people think Hunter is the best class, then everybody is going to try and counter the Hunter by bringing Priest...So they bring Druid Combo decks to beat the Priests.
And thus a new meta is born, and we avoid the darkest timeline of the "mirror meta"
I mean I'll have to see it in action I guess, but this sounds really boring to watch. Unless the classes are going to be balanced I'm just picturing all the druidstone, shamanstone, hunterstone, etc. tournaments. I don't really want to watch that. Sure, there's some rock, paper, scissors where you try to counter the best decks but I've never watched a rock, paper, scissors tournament before and I don't plan to.
