Hearthstone Dev Interview - C'Thun / Reno / Inspire, Pirates, Spirits in Arena
The Hearthstone reddit had a chance to sit down with Peter Whalen and Liv Breeden to talk about the new expansion.
Here's what they had to say.
- Work started on Rastakhan's Rumble back in early January.
- Unsurprisingly, Battle for Azeroth inspired the set. The team didn't feel constricted by using it - lots of cool characters.
- Spirit cards will be available in the arena.
- The Shrine mechanic is only for the single-player content.
- Starting with Kobolds & Catacombs, they learned that build around cards are better when they are easier to obtain (rare).
- Using their newfound knowledge on build arounds, this set gave players a cheap and expensive version of the same build around to keep it more accessible. (Spirits and Loas)
- They are not opposed to bringing back older keywords / mechanics we loved such as Reno Jackson (Highlander), C'Thun, Inspire.
- We're going to see pirates in the set but not all of them will be cheap to play. Pirates are still an aggressive archetype though.
Quote from Peter Whalen and Liv BreedenPig: We won’t be seeing a return of old keywords anytime soon?
Peter: Certainly not in Rastakhan’s Rumble. But I think it's unfair to count anything out. I think especially old keywords that people have loved before, I think we'll continue to see them. Hero cards are a great example, right? We took a set off, we didn't do any hero cards in Kobolds and Catacombs, and then we've brought them back a small number over the past year.
Pig: One every expansion, it's been really fun!
Peter: One every expansion. So we'll figure out exactly what's the right cadence for hero cards or there's other mechanics that people have loved in the past. Reno Jackson was a cool card.
Pig: Highlander cards!
Peter: Or there's Inspire. There's C'thun, there's all these cool mechanics and none of these are things I'm saying "Oh, this is coming back soon". But there's lots of stuff that people love. And so why wouldn't we bring it back? That sounds great.

I will never stop being an old gods fanboy. I love every single one of them and am a forever a C'thun main. Recently shuder'thun has been my new favorite meme/decent deck.
What inspired them to do things like “we’re gonna come up with a new concept called C thun” for one expansion, and then introduce no further cards with c thun synergy at all, after that 1 expansion?
or similarly, introduce a keyword called Inspire for 1 expansion, and then quickly see this keyword fall out of favour with the devs in subsequent expansions?
Could it be that there are Frequent changes to the devs in team 5?
Plzzzzzzzz give warrior Varok Sourfang for his legendary.
I would love to see a new batch of Quests once the newest standard year starts and Un'Goro rotates out. Those were very fun and intuitive cards to build around and felt really good to complete. I've been playing Quest Hunter as a fun off-meta deck since its release, and I'd love to see more opportunities for Quests in the future, competitive or not.
Bring back Wild cards, and unless they add a program/service to restore and re-open old cards at a discount, I'll quit.
Can't afford to F2P competitively with Wild & Standard, so I dust all my Wild cards to stay competitive Standard.
162 free packs last xpac, only 4 legendaries. Love the "I didn't buy packs" RNG.
But you got 162 FREE packs... that translates to a lot of dust... for free...
I don't think there is an "I didn't buy packs" RNG, but if there was, whatever. Free stuff is free stuff.
162 packs? Damn that two times the amount I farmed as a F2P, how can you be pissed off by this? It's dust even if it's not a Legendary.
he's probably also lying.
that's an extremely unlikely outcome (the absolute bare minimum is 4 out of 160).
we can confirm with this link https://www.hearthpwn.com/members/Mnemonicabyss/collection if he ever links his collection to his hearthpwn account.
i wouldn't count on it ever happening though.
Lol look at all you haters. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Yes, I got roughly 162 free packs.
I opened four Legendaries, and my friend that bought the pre-release packs opened 10 legendaries with less packs.
You're crazy if you don't think there are algorithms changing the outcome of packs purchased vs free. It happens every patch.
I had roughly 14-15k gold, didnt spend anything from last expac. I only buy packs at the expansion day and save all my daily quest gold from day one. I also use google surveys and get roughly $18 Google money that month from answering various questions about my driving/whereabouts.
Keep on spending Hundreds of dollars on digital cards you troglodytes. At least my MTG collection sold for $5000 and I bought a trip to Dominican and a new gaming PC lul. This game isn't worth money.
They DID bring back Joust on the form of spells, so I can definitely see some old mechanics coming back...
I think they could still do a lot with Inspire. Intrigued to see what other mechanics others would like to see again ^^
I doubt they’ll bring back specific boosts for Cthun but I can see the contribute to the boss legend thing working again. Maybe giving him keywords
It was really the only part of the sentence that stood out. Everything else was just pointless whining.
plz reuse wild cards in standard
I really liked C'Thun, but I honestly do not expect him - or support for him - to ever make a return. Blizzard could bring back Inspire or Highlander with relatively little effort, but C'Thun? Unless they're gonna start making Wild-only cards, it doesn't seem like a plausible idea.
Not C'thun cards, but C'thun STYLE cards.
Battlecry give (target minion) +x/+x wherever it is.
For example, they (unlikely) could have made a card that gives a specific Loa extra stats or an extra effect. Or make a support card that brings the Loa back from the dead and shuffles it back into the deck with all of its buffs intact. Those are all C'thun style effects that could be modified to fit a new theme.
A fair point; my vision was rather narrow.
I would love to see more C'Thun cards. Magic got to a point where the non-Standard play in other formats was so large, they could make 1-off cards in a set for those groups. It meant nothing in Standard, but everything to Modern, Vintage, Cube, Commander, etc... I'm thinking the same will happen for HS one day.
Stupid reddit interview...completely useless.
C'Thun? C'Thun! C'THUN!!
