Ben Brode's PAX Dev 2018 Keynote
Brode recently gave the keynote at this year's PAX Dev and he recorded the audio of it to share. He talks about the little things that matter in game development that end up having a huge impact on players and developers. He talks about his mistakes and how you can better learn from them.
Ben Brode left Blizzard back in April of this year to co-found the game studio Second Dinner where he is the Chief Creative Officer. He is joined by Hearthstone team veterans Hamilton Chu, Yong Woo, Jomaro Kindred, and Michael Schweitzer.
Yeah, I asked myself if Blizzard let Ben and the other Developers work too much....
Btw time to wait for fun ... doesn’t the loading screen will take longer and longer with each new expansion they release?
I recall reading/hearing that this wasn't the case, when someone (Brode) was talking about burnout before, I want to say it was around the time of this talk originally happening, but I don't remember where, maybe reddit?
One commendable thing about HS is that the casual matchmaking feels way better than those of other online CCGs: in HS the matchmaking seems to bring people closer to 50% WR whereas in other games you can play dozens of games and you will be less likely to win if you have a meme deck.

Fawk these comments are just plain toxic... none below grasps what Brode was saying?
My question from this audio is WHY can one not record video at this PAX meeting? What good does that sort of limit do? Camera shy nerds / geeks mayhap?
The idea of PAX Dev is to give a place where developer's can talk openly about the process of game design with each other, without the worry of their comments being taken out-of-context or being used to sensationalise a story by the games media. They could also use it as a place to discuss secrets of game design that they perhaps don't want their consumers to know about, for whatever reason. Maybe they talk about common bugs or something and don't want people deliberately breaking their games, or maybe somebody does something that might be seen as a little bit shady.
As Ben mentions at the start of his talk though, his company is fairly new and has no great secrets, so he felt comfortable sharing it with the public.
Was being sarcastic guys.. Good to know that u can't go to rank 50.. Or ppl wud misuse it
So what if I make a new account, dump 2k$ and play all the tier 1 decks?
You do you. If "pwning noobs" is worth 2k for you, blizzard will thank you and the rest of us won't care.
That was a joke by me, of course.
To visualize it better like Ben said with movies . If you saw/remember the movie Mars Attacks , there are aliens who kill people with lasers the size of a normal Handgun or Rifle. One shot and everyone falls apart into his atoms.
So there was this Szene, a old Granny watching TV listening to some oldies with her headphones on. She didn’t checked a damn thing what happened around her. Now , to kill that granny the Aliens didn’t use a normal Laser, no they brought one with the size of a small house. Huge overkill right? But it was such a funny picture, that I will never forget it
So , of course I wouldn’t spend 2 k . But it would be a funny picture someone with a full golden deck ... 😂
btw I guess experience would help more than a full collection ( if someone is good with a fast aggro deck).
Yeah, it would definitely be a crazy sight. Golden odd warrior, or better yet, full golden legendary deck deck at rank 50. Even a golden whizbang would be pretty funny and probably great at those ranks.
I will just go to rank 50 and beat those noobs with my full collection... Well almost full
Uhm, only new accounts will start at rank 50 and you can't lose stars until rank 25, so good luck with doing that.
You're about as smart as your username makes sense.
Go sit in the corner.
I love how Hearthstone just shits all over these tips
Blizzard is adding 25 more ranks for new players.
Yeah, and from a mathematical perspective, I doubt it will help. At least it was nice of them to try after this issue was persisting for all these years /s
Probably one reason why brode left in the first place.
One rank for each new player 😁
Since players leave those ranks relatively fast, i guess either they have long que times or a huge gap inbetween ranks . ( a rank 50 guy will face a rank 30 guy)
