Hearthstone's Tournament Mode Will Be A True Beta
When it was first announced that Hearthstone was going to get a tournament mode at the start of this year, it was stated we'd initially see it as a beta. Dean Ayala has further confirmed that we should expect this to be a true beta. Here's what we know about the tournament mode so far:
- Tournament Mode Beta is to launch "around the middle of the year".
- Everything will be handled in the client.
- You can play in the tournaments anywhere whether you're at home or out at a Fireside Gathering.
- Initial functionality will include matchmaking and deck checking with more features coming over time.
- Bans will not be included at the start. They're looking forward to community feedback to direct the mode.
- The mode will be a "true beta". Expect bugs. Expect missing features.

Quote from Dean AyalaIt boggles my mind why they insist on keeping everything as barebones as possible. Constantly pretending they are a team of 5 with a game that barely keeps them afloat.
Features take time. Tournaments are a long requested game mode and we want to put something in the hands of the community as soon as possible. When we first announced tournaments as a beta, we meant that as a true beta. There might be some bugs, and there might be some features missing from it you thought were really important. We still think it will be really cool. Because tournaments mean so many different things to different people, it made sense to get together the pieces of a tournament that are absolutely necessary, then build on it one piece at a time as we gathered community feedback.
I miss those old BBS games. Would be fun to play Trade Wars, LORD or Usurper again.
Because we've been waiting for 5 years for them to implement one new game mode, a new game mode that should've been implemented on release.
Sure, coding is hard and all, but there's really no excuse for the pace of development. Look at Fortnite, they add major updates almost every week. You're telling me Blizzard can't do in a year what Fortnite does in a month?
Downvote me all you want, I'm not wrong.
JohnyBlueCaterpillar:
Way to prove exactly the point that Archaelicos is making. The complainers, like you, clearly have absolutely no idea what is involved in game development at this scale. Your disinterest in nuance or reading more than a few sentences at a time is less than impressive. It's better to stay silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Ben, is that you?
Well spoken sir.
Sadly, most of the community will read your post and be like "Well, that' a valid point and all... But still... uhm... huh... NERF SPITEFUL SUMMONER!!!!!!"
I would like to add T5 make 2-3 set in advance so when they implement nerf's not only does it effect the power of current card but the yet to be released card's that have already been approved and finalized after that they tried balancing them for an month or 2 and the set they are currently working on. Now they have to re balance the current card their working on the already finalized(but yet to be released cards) and the released ones, eating time on the set their currently working on meaning its more likely for an card to be unbalanced since they didn't spend time trying to balance future card's but old ones.
So call to arms was made with spreading plague at 5 mana the card is an perfect follow up to the card being played the next turn so with plague nerfed it allowed for Call to arms to be broken not saying it should have stayed 5 just that nerfing it did have an effect on CTA power level.
Burn the witch!!1!
j/k, endless upvotes for the first guy on Hearthpown who did a good job on shutting down all the bs.
Why not give players the chance to ban at least 2 cards each to have a fun and competitive tournament. blizzard...blizard.....
That could potentially make all of a player's decks unplayable, unless you cannot ban neutrals. Banning 1 class is a more likely approach, and will probably be included at a later point, as they already have this in the official HCT Tournaments :)
Team 5 could take a lesson on how quickly the WoW dev team makes tweaks, and isnt afraid to make big moves to balance. It baffles me how slow Hearth moves.
I still occasionally play Elder Scrolls Legends just for a change of pace. They released an expansion a few days before Witchwood. Within a month there was a nerf patch haha. It's kinda ridiculous actually.
Okay calm down there buddy haha. I just mean they're both computer card games where changes should be easy, and it's not hard to listen to some community feedback, especially with some cards. They're comparable in the sense that, well, they're both computer card games.
I also know there's probably some uncertainty among their ranks with Brode gone. I know he didn't have much to do with balancing/changes/whatever (I still don't really know what he did exactly lol, besides be the "face" of Hearthstone), but it's understandable. I'm not too worried there hasn't been big changes yet. I'm just bored of facing pretty much the same cubelock deck for nearly half a year now haha.
Well on the plus at least they are adding a new mode to the game (which is a very good thing from my point of view). However I do have some worries about it.
I like the idea they are going for a basic format to start with and then add to it based on feedback. But to me that could be questionable. We know, for example, it took Blizzard about a month to fix Shudderwock (and that's just one card). We also know about the other changes that are happening with the other problematic cards, but again these changes are for the end of May (and that was mentioned last week).
So in short even though I think what they are doing is right, I really hope they will update the tournament mode a bit more quickly. Because if they don't do this, I think this idea could easily sink to nothingness and that wouldn't impress a good number of players.
I've wanted this forever but at this point, I don't even care anymore.
It will be a year before this even sees live and it should have been implemented at launch. And please, stop with the BS. They have near infinite resources and adding tournament mode is not a hard thing. They implement it as a brawl whenever they feel like it. It might not be conquest format, but its still tournament mode.
And with how slow they react to broken cards and a stale meta, I have lost all faith in the devs.
Which brawl have they made that is anything like this tournament mode? Heroic brawl certainly isn't, that's basically arena without the drafting.
It seems a crazyyy goood addition.
