lul? do you remember what mech mage was? that was a pretty oppressive deck in the past and i think this card alone makes WILD mech mage insane.. These big cards are just too slow in the current meta and if it stays an aggro meta like it is (obviously best deck being aggro/dude paladin), you're gonna die real fast especially with no iceblock in standard. In standard, this could put a midrange/aggro hybrid elemental style deck on the top tier list.
Wow, I really want to discard my Blizzard against aggro!
Arguably more value than Chromaggus as Chromaggus was just too expensive to play. Archmage Arugal gives you copies of minions. Leyline Manipulator anyone?
Idk why they are pushing minion mage. Spells are the identity of Mage, if I want to play heavy minion decks I'd play other classes.
Hit face is the identity of Hunter and all Blizzard have been doing for a while is pushing control hunter so I don't think it's weird by Blizzard's logic
Isn't a little variety good?
In general, it feels like they're pushing strong value cards for each class. I love value decks with a lot of card generation, but they're usually just a little too clunky to fight aggro, and don't always have a good win condition against control. But I hope this all works out. Love the design.
To be fair, that's exactly what people thought about Carnivorous Cube and warlock. If you explained to someone that you have to first get out a huge demon, then cube it, then dark pact it, etc., wouldn't you think it's super clunky? lul
When he draws you a double Leyline Manipulator, take care to play the original so that the duplicate is discounted.
Chromaggus with only minions, and cheap so you can get full use of the effect? Sounds pretty good. Just depends on how this Minion Mage they're pushing works.
Someone explain to me why this will see play where Roll the Bones failed.
Well, it's slightly better in that it works for any minions, not just deathrattle minions.
I just see this as clunky. Needs a combo, terrible tempo, and I fail to see how it really pushes a win condition. Better ways to draw cards IMHO without building around this Legendary...
It doesn't necessarily have to be a build around. The Archmage, since he's only a 2/2 will have to be played while your opponent's board is empty, or when you can use him immediately. He'll most likely eat up a more desperate removal spell than any other 2 drop would warrant, just like how Fandral Staghelm was used. If he survives, great. If he eats up a Frostbolt or an even bigger removal spell, it's still one for one. You just have to understand when to play him, and he'll be a good addition to your deck. If you DO manage to combo him with Tome of Specters, then that's amazing, and it's only 4 mana. Generally around turn 4 you wont need a huge hand refill anyways, so I think you would usually play him with Tome of Specters around turn 7-10, so you can still build your board, and not fall behind too badly, but then be able to make a bigger swing next turn. It's really good against control decks with lots of AoE ***COUGHWARLOCKCOUGHFREAKINGLORDGODFREYCOUGH*** since you'll be able to recover much more easily with the extra minions you get.
Maybe if they print a big mage spell that's 8-10 mana, then a good spiteful mage deck will pop up. If not, then one MIGHT work with just Pyroblast for finishing and Meteor for getting rid of big taunts, but that's an iffy because 6 drops can sometimes be pretty terrible.
Roll the Bones can't be used for a slightly-weak body against aggro. If I'm trying to use this in some sort of minion-heavy Mage to gain big value, I'm not going to be too worried about throwing it away in matchups where that value is less important than fighting for the board. Meanwhile, it's also likely the kind of minion an opponent will trade into.
I'm sure if there was a minion-equivalent of Roll the Bones, it'd probably have seen play. A 2-mana minion, 2/2 body, with "Battlecry: reveal a card in your deck. If it has Deathrattle, draw it."
A 2-mana 2/2 with a potential bonus is just better than a 2 mana spell to draw a card, with some potential bonus.
Minion deck mage
If you have coin:
Turn 3: coin, Archmage Arugal then Book of Specters = 6 cards
Turn 4: Leyline Manipulator
Nice idea, but if there's an aggro meta game instead of the tempo/midrange that this pushes of any kind, I feel like you will not wanna go with a turn 3 2/2.
Here's to hoping that aggro paladin dies.
It's called Archmage. Actually he has anti-synergy with spells.
Why?
