Designer Insights: Upcoming Arena Changes - New Cards and Pick Rules
Prepare yourselves, Arena changes are coming! In a Designer Insights video today, Kris Zierhut, Lead System Designer, talks about new changes coming to Arena.
- The cards from BlizzCon are finally being added! They will be available for a limited time.
- Cards will be offered based on their relatively equal power level and not just by rarity. Commons could be paired with a Rare for example.
- Legendary cards will still be offered in sets of 3.
- Picks 1, 10, 20, and 30 will still contain cards that are of Rare quality or better.
- They are temporarily disabling the increased chance to see cards from the most recent expansion.
- Existing rules that affect appearance rates are unchanged.
- The new cards will leave the arena pool when the expansion hits.
The New Cards
A couple of things have changed since the original BlizzCon cards.
- The Priest card has decreased in cost from 3 to 2 mana.
- Wording on several cards has been adjusted but retain the same effects.

Mike Donais on Card Power
Quote from Mike DonaisWe had to take educated guesses on which power level buckets these go into when we added them.
Like most arena events they will be around for a while, and then they will leave. In this case they will leave with the release of the next expansion. I think they are pretty interesting cards in general.
Can we get the Rogue one as a playable card for ladder? Since it dodged HOF once again Gadgetzan Auctioneer would like some love....
Ok... nice...
We can talk about the new expansion now?
No.
So conceal is OP but conceal + draw a card is fine Blizzlogic
Conceal wasn’t op, they removed it because of uninteractivity. Also that was specifically in standard. This is a temporary arena card, that targets a single minion. There are already effects similar to this in the game.
So approximately 4~5 months will pass, until the devs finally decide to implement those cards.
Ammm, I don't want to sound like a someone, who is complaining a lot. Tbh I don't care that much about them, as I don't play arena at all, but I think, that most of us forgot, that this feature was ever been mentioned. Look, I respect Blizz for trying 1) to improve the art of those cards; 2) to make some balance changes and 3) to improve the arena experience and all, but this happens way too slow imho. Or, better said, the main problem lies in the lack of notifications or updates on what's going on.
I just think, that the devs could be a bit more informative towards the users. They don't have to write essays, just the most important things in 2-3 sentences.
I see your point and maybe you are right.
Dunno, mate, I would personally prefer this over the 4 months of silence. I think it was OK to write (or tweet) the following: "Currently we are working on the art of the new cards. We are thinking on implementing them in addition to other upcoming arena changes, which will occur in a future patch. Right now we are working on releasing the K&C expansion, so this is our main priority. Please understand, that we don't want to rush the aforementioned patch, in order for us to make everything run smoothly. We would like to make the arena experience more amusing for you, so we would need a bit more time for discussing the probable changes and play-testing them"; or "Due to the upcoming ranked/balance changed {Patches Nerf} we are postponing the arena patch" or something in those lines.
Like I said this is my opinion.
The reward structure was data-mined a LONG time ago: https://hearthstone.gamepedia.com/Arena
that Warrior weapons is sick, hunter card is good too, shaman (sad for again shit for you, its same like temporus but you dont have 2 turns you just have minions and board clear
When is the Year of the Raven Q&A reschedule???
This will 100 % be "synergy picks 2.0", but i am glad they r at least making an effort, it will be long and painful journey, but we might get there eventually :)
On a bright side, with removed offering rates for the newest xpac, (dragon) priest meta should be relatively gone, yaaay! :)
LOL shaman got a shit card in arena too good riddance to a caner class one more expansion till the class is dead. year of the raven dont **** with me
Lol, if you think that a full board clear that gives you enormous tempo is bad, then I don't honestly know what to tell you.
Yeah, I think they're really balanced. Not OP, but not weak cards as well.
the full board clear in hearthstone is over rate where as broad clear that only target you enemy like flamestrick is op, that why they have to make it 0 mama with overload so it not to op like Elemental Destruction . The only way that it could be good is if you use it before turn 10 to stop an aggro push and hope you opponent has no refill, to contest what ever you put on broad. and in terms of tempo your holding back you card that could protract your hp e.g taunts and if you don't have them and play this card you giving your opponent charge on every minion that they play the very next turn. In a dream would you draft a Eternal Sentinel and draw it that same time you play that card and seeing how that is not likely in arena that why i call it a bad card and I dont like sharman
