Hearthstone Needs More Game Modes - What New Modes Could They Create?
Game modes are always an interesting topic in the Hearthstone community. Originally, the game on release had regular play through Ranked and an Arena mode originally called The Forge. Over time we received Tavern Brawls and Adventures which made for some other great content to play through, though that doesn't run all the time.
Without a doubt, the Hearthstone team is still interested in adding more modes to the game though, proven with Dungeon Run being added in the Kobolds & Catacombs expansion, though PVE content isn't for everyone.
Clearly, Hearthstone needs more game modes!
We've been thinking about it recently and had a couple of ideas we thought were worth bringing up to encourage community discussion to see what ideas other people have. We're interested in different ways of drafting cards much like the Arena, so we're going to talk about that!
The modes described below both share a unique attribute Hearthstone doesn't currently have in that it would be something played upon entry and not something you can play over time like Arena. You'd also be paired up with an opponent (maybe even multiple people - tournaments?) and we think playing a few matches against them, best of 3, would be a better test of skill and make the processes more worthwhile.
Idea #1 - Pack Draft
Hearthstone's Arena is modelled after a traditional card game drafting tournament but downscaled for one player. What would normally happen is a pack of cards is opened and each player participating in the draft event take turns picking cards from the packs until they're all gone, which ends up being a very lengthy process.
Blizzard themselves has stated having a true draft would take too long, so why not draft packs of cards instead of single cards, taking turns between players?
- You end up in a lobby with your opponent(s) where pack selection can take place.
- In order, each player takes one pack from the pool of packs until all packs are exhausted. Pack contents are visible.
- You build a deck using the cards opened from your packs in a limited amount of time and then fight!
Idea #2 - Mirrored Sealed
Similar to the first idea, you're going to receive a brand new set of cards to build your tournament deck with, but there's no drafting phase at all!
- Each player receives the exact same collection of cards from randomly opened packs.
- You're given a set amount of time to build your deck using the cards opened from those packs.
One neat take away from this idea is that it can add some serious depth and mind games to the deckbuilding process. You have the exact same cards, who can build and play the stack they're dealt better?
What do You Think?
Polls are awesome and we'd like to know what you think. Which of our ideas do you think is better and even more importantly, what ideas do you have for new game modes?
How about a draft format where you keep the cards you draft? Another idea is a constructed mode that doesn't allow basic/classic.
entry would have to cost like 500 g or something...
Bigger is better : double health, double cards per deck and draw 2 cards at a time.
It's just a brawl idea maybe, but still sucks. Blizzard, please, don't listen to him.
- It's not a brawl, just bigger decks
- Don't worry kiddo, it's just an idea
We need best-of-five series where each player picks 4 decks from different classes and bans one of the opponent's. Just like the big tournaments. Whether it's a ladder system with stars or a tournament system with brackets, a series kills the monotony of simply spamming one deck on ladder and greatly ramps up the game's skill cap. No brainer.
And that mode should be foremost top.
ADD 1 HERO BAN to RANKED MODE
How to Ban: Choose a Hero (Example: Priest) and Choose 2 Cards (Example: Raza and Velen) (usually a break-combo have always a min of 2 cards to work good)
You never play versus Priest with these cards in ranked, but you can play versus the another 8 Heroes and Priest that don't have Raza+Velen.
In any Tournament you always have 1 Hero ban. Why not in Ranked mode??? It's a competitive mode, aren't u?
This January i see like a lot of streamers and competitive players only play Razakus to farm points to HTC (because this was the best and ONLY WAY to get the best result), and see like they play more than 1000 games only with Razakus. (this is ridiculous, and plp begin to hate the game that don't let you play variety of decks if you wanna win some game, and don't make the ridiculous)
Sorry for my english, i hope that can understand me ^^
Thats because you suck
- Tournament mode
- Co-op mode
- 2v2 mode
- More single player content
- Heroic brawl mode
- Wild arena
Just on top of my mind, excluding any new idea that might come. The game is in desperate need of new game modeS. Not just one. more.
I actually like both ideas equally. But I vote for #1 - Pack Draft because it has more fun factor. #2 - Mirrored Sealed is mode more suited for competition / tournament.
What I was hoping Blizzard will someday do with Hearthstone is to enable 2v2 mode. Before HS I was MTG player and I regularly played Two-Headed giants, and I had loads of fun. I know Blizzard cannot copy the rules, but something similar would be greatly appreciated by the community I am sure.
Here are suggestions for 2v2 mode:
Yeah I agree 100%
Blizzard can open a tournament each month and every one (if it is too much contributor they can reduce the numbers by putting some requirements. Lets say you should have complete at least 15 daily quests or something like that) can join it. First a group stage and then a knockout stage. Winners can get some fancy prizes.
They should make PvP dungeon run option. Populating deck mechanics should stay same (or might be altered since each class is not equally powerful), and players should face other players. At each level, one should face players with equal number of wins. I guess, implementing this shouldn't be too hard since there is no change in the game mechanics.
A game mode with no random effect cards included.
There should be a third mode in addition to standard and wild that uses select sets from both.. and changes every season.. like this season it’s... classic set.. black rock mountain.. and un goro.. then next month is grand tournament.. knights of the frozen throne.. and whispers of the old gods..
the constantly rotating sets, and small card pool forces players to use less common cards, and will make for a different meta every month
I like this idea!
This sounds really good.
IMO they will do something like that, but they're waiting for more sets to be released. It won't feel that unique now, after a few seasons.
What I think is we don't need to draw anything, as long as we can construct decks with the cards we have and play against decks of similar strength:
