Caught! Mike Donais Helped Redesign a Magic Card for Hearthstone
A thread on reddit created by cromatkastar early this morning titled "'Can I copy your homework?' 'Sure'" got itself a response from Hearthstone's Principal Game Designer, Mike Donais. Cromatkastar pointed out that the new Violet Wurm card was exactly like a card from Magic the Gathering - Symbiotic Wurm.
Mike came in and noted that he helped design both Kobolds & Catacombs and the 17-year-old Magic expansion the card came from - Onslaught. That's a pretty impressive history!
Quote from Mike DonaisQuick Question: Is it still copying if I designed Symbiotic Wurm for Onslaught 17 years ago and then designed it again for Hearthstone?
(That isn't exactly how it happened but I helped design both expansions and it makes a much better story.)
According to what I learned in college, copying yourself, albeit for another project, is still plagiarism. Not saying I agree with that logic.
Only problem i see is that this should had beem a hunter class card.
what about this two cards ? the second card from eternal ccg game
I would love to see more re-designed Magic Cards !! :D
Am I the only one?
Indeed. There's a whole hell of a lot more interesting effects and synergies in MtG than Hearthstone. A lot more variety and options for doing similar things in different ways too. Granted, MtG has been around a lot longer, but Hearthstone could've and should've swiped a lot more ideas from them AND the WoW TCG than they've done with past card sets.
I mean, The Darkness is pretty clearly based on Dark Depths, soooo......
Did you guys now, that the whole WOW Universe was a copie of Warhammer at the Beginning ?
Not exactly a copy, I mean, they actually designed it to pitch as a Warhammer Fantasy game.
This; if I remember right they were in cahoots to make a Warhammer game, GW backed out and Blizzard had to choose between bankruptcy or merely changing the names and stuff.
"Merely." They changed a lot more than that, but ok...
I love it when reddit trolls get put in there place.
Guys. Magic has had over 20 years of development. Just about everything you can do with cards has already been created by them. I challenge you to come up with a single (legitimate) mechanic that Magic hasn't used. You probably can, but your first 4 or 5 tries will likely have already been done.
One of Hearthstone's strengths is in being able to do things that Magic can't/won't or can't easily do, since it's a purely digital format. It's more like a video game that way. Even for digital formats Magic still holds true to their edict that they will only allow things that can happen in the physical game. With HS, cards can easily transform into anything. Cards that didn't previously exist can magically appear. You can play cards that aren't in your collection. I'm sure as time goes on we'll see even crazier things (ex. cards that explode into pieces that are distributed into both decks and do stuff when drawn or can be combined, board interactions that can affect the game, 'traditional' game mechanics like tapping, match3, grenade lobbing arcs, etc. etc.).
So true. And yet Team 5 refuses to take full advantage of Hearthstones digital nature and barely ever change card text, and even when they do it's only to nerf them. They never buff bad cards, even when they're legendary. Seems like all they care about is conning you into buying more card packs from the newest expansion instead of making sure all cards have some value and aren't a waste of money. Eventually this will become a game for only whales due to the enforced standard format being too expensive to keep up with for most and the wild format being a dump for imbalanced cards that were never nerfed when they should've been.
ScorchHellfire.
Gonna need to quash the 'they never buff cards' myth right here and now.
Lord Jaraxxus was buffed in 9.2.0.21517 (October 17 2017) by removing his weakness to Repentance, Snipe, and Sacred Trial.
Murloc Warleader was buffed in 6.2.0.15181 (October 20, 2016) when they changed the text from 'ALL murlocs get +2/+1' to 'FRIENDLY murlocs get +2/+1'
Naga Sea Witch was buffed in 9.0.0.20457 (August 8, 2017) when they changed the interaction between cost reduction layers.
Wickerflame Burnbristle, and Mistress of Pain were buffed in 9.0.0.20457 (August 8, 2017) when they removed the infinite life loss loop caused by Auchenai Soulpriest.
And Bane of Doom was buffed in 2.4.0.8311 (March 31, 2015) when it increased the number of demons summonable from Blood Imp, Voidwalker, Flame Imp, Succubus, Felguard, and Dread Infernal, to all collectable demon cards, at the time, adding Doomguard, Lord Jaraxxus, Pit Lord, Illidan Stormrage, Floating Watcher, Voidcaller, Imp Gang Boss, and Mal'Ganis. That is a STRICT buff.
So. No. They have buffed cards, good sir, you just might not have noticed.
"Buffs" my ass. Those are minor fixes, not bugs. They've never buffed an unplayable legendary and that's a problem.
What are you even talking about. What 'bugs' are you even seeing me say were in place?
Those effects were INTENDED and then reversed after the fact. That isn't a bug fix, that is a buff.
Magic is pretty much "The Simpsons" of TCGs - whatever anyone does, they've done it already.
