New Legendary Paladin Weapon Reveal: Val'anyr
A new Legendary Paladin Weapon card has been revealed by IGN!
What is Val'anyr?
Val'anyr, Hammer of the Ancient Kings was a Mace created by the Titans and given to the first Earthen King, Urel Stoneheart. The weapon was used to create and give life to the Earthen, a race of proto-beings created by the Keepers to help shape the subterranean regions of Azeroth. During a war between the Earthen and Iron Dwarves, Val'anyr was shattered into fragments.
World of Warcraft
In World of Warcraft, Val'anyr was added to the game in Patch 3.1.0, Secrets of Ulduar. Players were able to collect Fragments of Val'anyr from the bosses of Ulduar (the Prison of Yogg!) with drop rates being as low as 3%. A player who was able to collect 30 Fragments was able to bundle them up and throw them into the maw of Yogg-Saron, Hope's End. After a successful defeat of the Old God, the player who collected the fragments would recover the Legendary mace from his corpse.
A wild Fluxadin outside Ulduar equipped with Val'anyr and Tier 2 Judgment Armor.
The mace is a healing item available to Druids, Paladins, Priests, and Shamans (with Monks being added later). The effect provided a chance to place a blessing on the target being healed, Blessing of the Ancient Kings, which lasted for 15 seconds and caused all healing done by wielders of Val'anyr to provide a damage absorption shield worth 15% of the amount healed to the target.
It took months of hard work to get a single mace for your guild, but it was worth it in the end. Guilds continued to run Ulduar to equip their heal team with the item well past the raid tier's viability not only due to the overpowered nature of the proc, but also because the item level was upgraded (from 239 to 245) in the next raid tier. It was so good that Blizzard was forced to nerf the proc rate for players above level 80 leading in to the next expansion, Cataclysm (featuring Deathwing!), because it would have continued to scale. The item was also plenty of fun to those who took it out in Arenas and Battlegrounds, it was like the Warglaives of Azzinoth Rogues all over again.
World of Warcraft: Trading Card Game
Hearthstone isn't the first card game rodeo for this Legendary weapon! Val'anyr was an epic, 1-Handed Mace introduced in the Icecrown expansion set. It has a cost of 4, attack of 1, and strike cost (resources to spend to attack with the weapon) of 4.
The effect in WoW:TCG was much closer to what players saw out of the World of Warcraft item. "At the end of your turn, your hero heals all damage from allies you control. Then, it heals that much damage from itself.". Hearthstone is the odd one out!

Too slow at 6 mana.
So what weapon will i equip if it buffs Tirion
Ashbrinber => Val'Anyr
Hope for Val'anyr followed by Ashbringer. That way you get the deathrattle and a 5/3 weapon.
Pint-Size Potion -> Potion of Madness
That will only work if the minion had 0 or 1 attack to begin with, but yeah, any mind control will be really powerful.
This is so frustrating! I've been holding my breath for a long time now that they would produce an "Ulduar" expansion but with the most iconic weapon from that raid being used in "Kobolds and Catacombs" my dreams are dashed. Damn you Blizzard. Why the HELL would you introduce a legendary weapon from Ulduar, a raid full of cosmic bosses, in an expansion about grubby little ratmen who wear candles on their heads? Have you lost your minds?
-Context: I was a resto druid with Val'anyr.
Ehr... I was so overjoyed by simply seeing Val'anyr that I forgot the context, my bad. But you have a point, my friend.
Quite a few Ulduar cards are already in.
Handbuff is not going to be a thing!~ It will never be a thing.
This weapon's greatness is not enough to enable handbuff.
What this enables is crazy burst potential, crazy corpsetaker potential, crazy leeroy blessed champ potential.
If you wanna handbuff just run keleseth instead - he is a whole deck buff that doesn't require you to sit on your hands turns 1-3. Playing Paladin will always mean playing curvestone and handbuff goes against curvestone. your early game is trash when you try to make handbuff work because you sit on a bunch of minions and minions are slow. If you are going to sit on your hands like priest does you need to be able to get huge reactive board clears on turns 4-6 and that is not what paladin does - especially if your deck is all minions.
The tempo loss from handbuffing is too great.
Keleseth is love, Keleseth is life, keleseth invalidates handbuff - end of story
At first i thought the weapon would autommatically reequip itself whenever it was destroyed, thankfully that's not the case.
Personally I feel like the weapon is kind of slow, and might not even be worth the effort. +4/+2 is pretty neat, but buffs are a lot better when they give a lot health as opposed to attack (unless we're talking about charge combos or the likes of it).
Obviously getting your buffed minion hard removed or silienced is pretty bad. then again, at this point Paladin has so many cards worth silencing that if you stick all of them in one deck, something is going to stick around.
What I wanna know is how this interacts with Doppelgangster and Chain gang. Since they summon copies of the original, does that mean all of them will have the deathrattle that will reequip the weapon, does meaning that if they all died in succession the weapon would proc the deathrattle multiple times in a row, therefore practically spreading itself to the minions in your hand ad infinite?
Because that could actually make it insane despite silence being run.
Either way, Paladin is still the most expensive class as of now
Silence
OMG, Val'anyr! Lore-wise, this is huge!
And it means even more for former WoW players like me... thank you so much Flux, for celebrating the occasion with your screenshots and backstory :)
Since is a deathrattle weapon, this one will surely see play :) you get value even if the opponent oozes it.
Does leeroy get run in pally? 10/4 charge seems pretty good..
*laughs in priest Psychic Scream
Actually, if buffed minion is shuffled, it won't trigger deathrattle for weapon(so you won't get another one 4/2 weapon). Most likely.
laughs in mage counter spell
yea yea priest got a good card lets spam it in every thread because they get 7 mana drop
go on do in at turn 7 and miss chance using it aganist my sweet sweet tirion :)
*laughs even lauder
*plays silence to check counter spell / on tirion
*emotes "Not quite what was planned"
*sends friend request "get rekt son"
jk ;)
