Hands on with the Kobolds and Catacombs New Dungeon Run Feature
We've got some of our greatest men on the show floor and we've gotten a chance to play through the new Dungeon Run feature in Kobolds and Catacombs. Here's what we've learned.
What is a Dungeon Run?
Dungeon Runs are a new type of single player content for Hearthstone, much like an Adventure. We won't be getting an adventure this time around due to Dungeon Runs but they're very similar in idea though Dungeon Runs have a ton of replayability.
- You'll pick a class to go on your Dungeon Run with.
- After you defeat a boss in a Dungeon Run, you get extra loot to power your deck up.
- Passives: Cards that give you a bonus for your run.
- Treasures: Powerful cards that are added to your Dungeon Run deck.
- Cards: You'll get to pick between themed bundles of cards to add to your Dungeon Run deck.
- There are 48 unique encounters in total, which are further augmented by the variance in cards you play with each time.
- Losing to a boss in a Dungeon ends your current run.
- If you win a Dungeon Run with each of the 9 classes, you unlock a card back!
The best part about Dungeon Runs? They're completely free! You don't even need to have cards in your Hearthstone collection.
Bosses
We don't know too much about all the bosses yet, but here's what we've learned so far both during panels and from playing.
- Blacksteed
- Hero Power: 0 Mana - Transform a minion into a random one that costs 1 more.
- Giant Rat
- Hero Power: Rat Race (2 Mana) - Summon two 1/1 Rats.
- Elder Brandlemar
- Hero Power: Dampen Magic (2 Mana) - Put a Counterspell secret into the battlefield.
- Waxmancer Sturmi
- Hero Power which creates wax clones of minions on the field. They're 1/1 copies.
- Room of Traps
- It's one of the hardest encounters out there.
- Due to difficulty, it has a lower chance to show up.
- Battlecrier Jinzo
- His Hero Power is a passive which makes Battlecries trigger twice.
- Frostfur
- Hero Power: Freezes a minion for 2 mana.
- Kraxx
Passives
You get two of these a run and you'll get them after you start to accumulate wins. Their goal is to increase your power. These are the passives that are available on the show floor today with many others being
- Captured Flag - Your minions have +1/+1.
- Glyph of Warding - Enemy minions cost 1 more.
- Justicar's Ring - Your Hero Power is upgraded and costs (1).
- Khadgar's Scrying Orb - Your spells cost 1 less.
- Mysterious Tome - At the start of the game, play 3 random secrets.
- Potion of Vitality - Double your starting health.
- Small Backpacks - At the start of the game, draw 2 cards.
Treasures
In addition to the passives you earn throughout your dungeon journey, there are also treasure cards. Like passives, you only get two treasure cards per run and they will unlock throughout your dungeon journey. Here are the treasures that were active on the show floor.
- Bag of Coins - Fill your hand with Coins.
- Boots of Haste - Your minions cost (0) this turn.
- Gloves of Mugging - Steal 3 cards from your opponent's hand.
- Horn of Cenarius - Recruit 3 minions.
- Rod of Roasting - Cast 'Pyroblast' randomly until a hero dies.
- Vorpal Dagger - Poisonous. Mega-Windfury (Can attack four times a turn.)
- Wand of Disintegration - Silence and destroy all enemy minions.
- Wax Rager - Deathrattle: Resummon this minion.
- Wish - Fill your board with Legendary minions. Fully heal your hero.

card back earn and see ya for most !
It's gonna be pretty funny... or not.
Looks like a really interesting and fun thing to me. Something to aim for. I enjoyed getting some of the heroic card backs on the adventures. I'm not a f2p player and pre order each expansion but also in sitting on 7k gold which I've been accumulating. I'm not sure how long that's taken me but ive just been selective on rechoosing low gold quests etc. I personally don't understand when people get upset and say about it being win to play. Yes some of the legendary cards overide skill but also why should it be ftp? Why should all the work and effort and money the company have spent give it all to you for free?
The only thing about this mode that concerns me is it's difficulty. If it's not difficult enough it's gonna suck bad time. It would be nice to have some rewards beyond a silly card back, but it doesn't matter because it seems like a fun mode. Something that HS lacks is a decent single player mode that is fun to play. Just please make it difficult and challenging enough and it will see play no matter what people in the comments say.
I personally would enjoy a grindable format like this, other online CCGs have them, and it's a good way to help build up a collection for newer players. Even though Blizzard loves pushing PvP content on us, it tends to get boring, and it's hard for new players to succeed at it. Personally, I would love a draft mode besides Arena where you actually got to open packs to choose cards from, or maybe an Arena event where you got to keep the card that you drafted after the Arena was over so it would be a guaranteed way to get your Gold's worth even if you're a new player who only gets 1 win.
A free, optional game mode is added, and people act like it's the end times because it doesn't come with dust attached. Miserable assholes.
Replay it because it's fun?
Replayability has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with rewards. Replayability means that you can do it again and again and have a different experience every time. Chess has nearly infinite replayability, and the vast majority of people playing it are rewarded with nothing more than the pleasure of the game. You may be too greedy to enjoy anything without the promise of material gain, but that's hardly Team 5's fault.
And it bears repeating -- no one gives a flying fig about those who refuse to pay for their entertainment. There will always be more freeloaders, but even without them, Hearthstone would be just fine.
Free stuff is intended to lure people in and hopefully convert them to paying customers. It is not intended that F2P should be a lifetime commitment. If you don't convert, you are welcome to hit the bricks.
I know right?I also made a comment about this topic and it gets downvoted by people who are so greedy that even if you give them an update that contains Free practice for arena, an oportunity for new players to learn about cards and ther impact in situations ,to know afterwards what they like and what to craft. Some people are like, okey but what is the reward???Maybe im stupid but when any game gets a dlc it usualy cost money just to try it ,so why can't you be happy to just get it for free. It looks to me like "hey here is a Gift for you , and the response some are making ill take it if you give me 5 bucks" @-@.
Yeah, why do you think they still give out card packs every tavern brawl even though it was originally thought that would only be for launch? They know that without the pack most people would never even click that button. It's a little different for a single player game mode that doesn't need a lot of players to stay relavent, but it seems like a waste when every game you spend in a dungeon run is a game you could be earning gold and ranks with on the ladder.
Alright, and how many people are playing chess on there phones day in and day out paying 50 bucks every 4 months to play more chess?
No one would complain if it hadn't been ages since the last game mode was introduced. Because it is frustrating that when it does
1. It isn't tournament mode
2. It's supposed to have tons of replayability while being PVE
3. Having no rewards attached to it, despite being loot-themed
But what annoys me the most is that blizzard can do literally ANYTHING, no matter how bad it is, no matter how delayed it is, and there's ALWAYS going to be people to defend them and dismiss legitimate criticism. They're the assholes for being pissed that the hearthstone team seems to have no hierarchy of priorities, you are the saint that will congratulate them for finally releasing the game replay feature on the 10th game anniversary.
I disagree, you should be rewarded for a dungeon run. That's why you go in a dungeon, the VIDEO blizzard made for this expansion nails into your head the fact that you go into a dungeon looking for treasure. But at the end of the dungeon there is nothing but (expected) disappointment.
Dungeon run is extremely cool adition, because of it's replayability. I'm that kind of gamer that look for fun not "Earning Stuff", sometimes i get to play adventures that I already defeated just for fun.. And they announced there will be quests that orient on dungeon runs and that card back everybody is talking about for some reason that it's "pure garbage" and "U call dis a reward?''. I tottaly agree that the point of the games is to have fun, this will clear the Pay2Win feeling i have when i play HS, because i'm a F2P player that searches for entertaintment.
Agreed, but Blizzard isn't some supreme god that can develop their game along with their community. They put out game content and the community responds. The 'Meta' will always be defined by players and often enough the good decks are the most annoying to play against. Since Blizzard is really pushing player interactions, ranked, Standard is their main focus, and it's obvious.
Many people, (myself included) would like to see longer story missions and whatnot that grant actual rewards, not just a one-time legendary. Arena is a good source of dust and gold, but not everyone is good enough to make it pay off at the end of the week. But until Blizzard realized that there's a large enough part of the community wanting to 'grind' solo missions, we wont be getting much content in excess from what we've seen with KFT.
These new Dungeon raids or whatever look promising, but again, they promise a cardback, not progression-related goods that we're all hungry for. I think Blizzard assumes that the daily quests are enough for the average player, but IMO 40-60 gold a day isn't enough to keep up with even one of the expansions. Tavern Brawls are great, but i wish you could get at least 2 packs a week from those, but everyone knows it's all a money business and they need players to buy cards to keep everything running.
I'm going to basically wait and see what this next expansion holds for PVE content, but I'm not too optimistic. The raids look fun, but not rewarding past that.
so you dont get any rewards for completing it ? whats the point
some gold or dust or a card to add to our collection would be fun
